Flower of the Day – Xerophyllum

These large green plants have spiky and sharp green stems that flare out. They are commonly known here as bear grass, or yucca, but their other name is Xerophyllum. In this photo it is in the foreground and behind that is a rose bush with red flowers.

Look at this…we have another month of square photos, hosted by Becky! The topic for this time is anything spiky, pointy, jagged, sharp, serrated, and anything else we can think of that will fit.

You, too, can join in this fun photo challenge. Just click the above link to find out details.

I’ve been making a list of all things spiky, and taking photos of them, too. I want to have a song to go with them, but we’ll see if I can find enough.

Anyway, to start things off I took this photo outside of a Mexican restaurant the other day. This kind of plant we see all the time around here. Let me see if I can find out what it is…either yucca or bear grass. Being that where I live is in the semi-desert, these grow very well here. Okay, I found out they are a little bit different plants, but can be called by either name.

Then, I found this cute little song about a porcupine. They have quills that are very spiky!
