I first thought of this song for the prompt of weather. Weather is almost always on my mind, especially when there are thunderstorms, because living in ‘tornado alley’ here, we can have one any time. I know, as I’ve survived an F-5 tornado right here in town. Every springtime brings nightmares of that night – May 11, 1970.

I like the song, and also like a lot of Carrie Underwood’s songs. She is from Oklahoma, and definitely knows about tornadoes, too.

From a Wiki article” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blown_Away_(Carrie_Underwood_song)

“Blown Away” tells the story of a daughter locking herself in a storm cellar while her alcoholic father is passed out on the couch in the path of a tornado.[5] Underwood revealed that “Blown Away” was the song that defined the direction of the album, and recalled the first time she heard the demo:

“I listened to it on my crappy computer speakers and then I had to go find my headphones because as soon as I listened to a few bars, I had to listen more closely and I got chills. I remember where I was when I heard it and called my manager, Ann, and I was like, ‘Do not let anyone else have this song! It’s my song.’ In talking to Chris and Josh about it, they [told me], ‘We said we’re either writing a song for Carrie Underwood or this song is never going to see the light of day.’ It made me feel so good that they were thinking of me when they wrote it.”[5]

“Blown Away”, by Carrie Underwood was released as a single from her 2011 album of the same name. It was written by Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear, and is on the Arista Nashville label.

Dry lightning cracks across the skies
Those storm clouds gather in her eyes
Her daddy was mean a old mister
Mama was an angel in the ground
The weather man called for a twister
She prayed blow it down
There’s not enough rain in Oklahoma
To wash the sins out of that house
There’s not enough wind in Oklahoma
To rip the nails out of the past
Shatter every window ’til it’s all blown away
Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away
‘Til there’s nothing left standing
Nothing left of yesterday
Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away, blown away, blown away
She heard those sirens screaming out
Her daddy laid there passed out on the couch
She locked herself in the cellar
Listened to the screaming of the wind
Some people called it taking shelter
She called it sweet revenge
Shatter every window till it’s all blown away
Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away
‘Til there’s nothing left standing
Nothing left of yesterday
Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away, blown away
There’s not enough rain in Oklahoma
To wash the sins out of that house
There’s not enough wind in Oklahoma
To rip the nails out of the past (blown away)
Shatter every window till it’s all blown away
Every brick, every board, every slamming door blown away (blown away)
Till there’s nothing left standing
Nothing left of yesterday
Every tear-soaked whiskey memory blown away
Blown away, blown away, blown away, blown away

Today’s weather report: Dust

We are having a sand storm this morning. The sky is brown with all the dust up in the sky. My phone says visibility is only 1,323 YARDS! Expecting wind gusts to 60 mph, too.

This photo is looking out our back door toward the lake, with the barely seen houses on the other side.

Scenes of Favorite Days # 1

Sand stormy day (brown sky, part of a house and fence)

Scenes of Favorite Days # 1

***

Do you have memories of favorite kinds of days? Mine usually involve some type of weather, for some reason.

Here’s the first one:

***

Chilly, super windy day with the sand blowing, turning the sky brown. Usually happens in winter time or early spring time.

I have a pile of new books from the library around me on the bed. I’m covered up with a snuggly home-made quilt.

I have a Charms candy sucker – usually lemon-lime flavor

The bedroom window is open a crack, because I feel claustrophobic if the room is totally enclosed.

The wind is knocking things around outside, and as it whooshes through the open window it makes a mournful whistling sound.

I have my old fashioned, gold-toned goose neck lamp up on the bed’s headboard. It’s turned on, as it is a gloomy kind of day.

Everyone else in the house is quiet, also probably reading.

My choice of book this day is a science fiction novel (I can’t remember the name of it, but it was engrossing)

I am maybe in my early teens.

I still have that lamp as you can see from this photo.

Haboob!

Haboob!

***

Here’s some photos of the Haboob we had here yesterday afternoon!

It was a wall of dirt barreling through the city, with very strong winds. Then it poured down rain.

The first three photos are from the local weather station, and shows the brown roiling dirt coming closer to the city.

Even my phone sounded an alert…Dust Storm Warning!

The last two are what I saw from our back door. The sky was all dirty, gritty brown. It lasted awhile. We do get these Haboobs every once in awhile here.

We were even mentioned on the national news!

DUST STORM – WEEKLY WEATHER

DUST STORM – WEEKLY WEATHER

This Week’s Challenges: July 16 – 22 (OWPC & WW)

***

This week’s weather is brought to you by a dust storm! We have them all the time here, and I always try to take a photo of the dirt blowing around. The photos are okay, but for actually seeing them and being in them, they are much worse. If you’re outside, the little sand particles sting when they hit you, your eyes are gritty and red, and it even gets in your mouth. Not to mention the strong wind almost blowing you down. In the house, you can smell the dirt in the air, and it sifts in through every little crack around the windows and doors. These photos were just a week or so ago, then we had a haboob roll in, which caused them to cancel the fireworks display for the 4th of July. Then it came a downpour of rain. Yes, we get mud balls! Fun – fun! 🙂

SOCS – STREAM of CONSCIOUSNESS SATURDAY – MARCH

SOCS – MARCH

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS Mar. 25/17

***

Ok, or is it okay? I like ok better. Anyway, we marched into the AT&T store yesterday. Actually we walked. No, really we were blown in by the wind. That’s with a bunch of dirt and leaves, and my hair all wild and crazy like. That’s what I told the woman who greeted us, when she asked what brought us in to the store today (yesterday) … I said, “The wind blew us in here.” haha! Yeah, the wind was really blowing out there, the sky was brown with dirt, and dry leaves were swirling everywhere.

Where was I? Oh, after we marched into the store and got settled at a table, we told the lady what we were having problems with, with my iphone, and also we were asking about our TV stuff. Well, we’d already cancelled our TV, internet, home phone, but still we had questions. So she started explaining and looking up our account, and telling us stuff. Somehow we got onto how much or little I do use my phone. I said I take lots of photos to put on my blog. She was interested in hearing about that, and wanted to know what I put on my blog, so I told her. At first I was like…uh…I write fan-fiction…and uh…I do challenges, so I need lots of photos (why I need lots of space on the phone), and…uh…I write poetry, and….

That’s when she said, “Oh, you’re a writer and a poet! What books have you written?”

To say I was flustered about the whole explaining thing, well, I sure was. I mean no one has ever asked me about any of this before. I said I didn’t have any books, but I’ve had poems published in poetry magazines. Then she asked some more about it, and I mentioned I wrote about true ghost stories. Well, she was really interested in that, and even told me a true ghost story of her own!

I gave her my blog address, so she could stop by if she wanted to, and we finished our business with the phone/tv questions, which she was very helpful in straightening out for us.

So, I want to thank her for all she did.

Thank you Lisa, from AT&T…you made my day by recognizing and calling me a writer!

We then marched/walked out of the store, back into the howling wind with a smile. 🙂
