From the Wiki article:

Mary, Mary” is a song written by Michael Nesmith. It was first recorded by The Butterfield Blues Band for their 1966 album, East-West. Nesmith’s band, The Monkees, also recorded the song. Hip hop group, Run–D.M.C., revived the song in the late 1980s with a cover version that hit the R&B and pop charts in the United States.

Interesting fact:

  • The Monkees’ “Mary Mary” was not released as a single in the USA in the 1960s,[2][3] although it was given away as a cut-out cereal box prize in 1969.[4] Singles were released in several other countries[5] including Australia where the local RCA release was a number five hit in 1968.

“Mary Mary”, by the Monkees was released as a single from their album, “More of the Monkees”, in 1968. It was written by Michael Nesmith, and the label was RCA Australia.

[Verse 1]
Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?
Mary, Mary, can I go too
This one thing I will vow ya
I’d rather die than to live without ya

[Verse 2]
Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?
Mary, Mary, tell me truly
What did I do to make you leave me?
Whatever it was I didn’t mean to
You know I never would try and hurt ya
Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?

[Bridge]
What more, Mary, can I do
To prove my love is truly yours?
I’ve done more now than a clear-thinkin’ man would do

[Verse 3]
Mary, Mary, it’s not over
Where you go, I will follow
‘Til I win your love again
And walk beside you, but until then
Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?

Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?
Mary, where you goin’ to?
Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary, where you goin’ to?
Aw, Mary, where you goin’ to?
Mary, Mary
Mary, where you goin’ to?

I’ll admit, I loved the Monkees, as a band, and also their television show. It was funny, with lots of slapstick and campy humor, and had good music. I bought all their albums (vinyl) and still have them here. My daughters enjoyed the music and show, too. Funny fact…we actually do sometimes sing the song together, and do the funny walk.

Hope you enjoy this blast from the past.

P.S. Did you like the Monkees? Which guy was your favorite? I thought Davy was cute, but my favorite was Micky. I’d seen Micky Dolenz years ago in a movie titled, “Circus Boy”, and it was fun to see him again in the later TV show. 🙂

“(Theme From) The Monkees”

Here we come, walkin’
Down the street
We get the funniest looks from
Ev’ry one we meet
Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we’re too busy singing
To put anybody downWe go wherever we want to do
What we like to do
We don’t have time to get restless
There’s always something new
Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we’re too busy singing
To put anybody downWe’re just tryin’ to be friendly
Come and watch us sing and play
We’re the young generation
And we’ve got something to sayAny time, Or anywhere
Just look over your shoulder
Guess who’ll be standing thereHey, hey, we’re the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we’re too busy singing
To put anybody down

[break]

Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees
And people say we monkey around
But we’re too busy singing
To put anybody down

We’re just tryin’ to be friendly
Come and watch us sing and play
We’re the young generation
And we’ve got something to say

Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees
Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees
[repeat and fade]

[Extra verse:]
Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees
You never know where we’ll be found
So you’d better get ready
We may be comin’ to your town

Q – Did you get into MTV? If not, what was your favorite music-based TV program?

MTV came along way after I was a teen. Later on, my girls watched it a lot, so I watched it a lot, too. I loved all the rock videos, and Headbanger’s Ball was my favorite of their programs. They had a little game show, called ‘Remote Control’, and that was fun to watch. I lost interest in it when they pretty much quit playing videos. I did watch a lot of the Real World seasons, though. VH1 was ok for watching sometimes.

When I was a teen, though, it was American Bandstand, with Dick Clark, every Saturday! So many good bands played on that show. Then, I watched Soul Train when it came on.

One of my favorite music programs was called “Action” or “Where the Action Is”. It featured rock bands. They actually took some bands on a tour of the country, at one time. They came to our town and I got to go see them! That was so fun!

Later on, of course was the TV show, the “Monkees”. I loved watching that one too!
