House # 13

***

So, after we left east TX, my husband went back into the Army. He’d have to take a refresher course (or whatever you call it) which would take a few weeks.

My daughter and I went back to stay with my parents at the old homestead I grew up in. It was nice to get back home, even for a little while.

After his refresher training, he was assigned to the Army post at Ft. Riley Kansas. He found us a place to live, and me and my girl moved up there.

It was just a regular trailer house in a mobile home park, in Junction City Kansas. It was okay. We made some friends, had barbeques, played cards, and the usual things we do from day to day.

Sorry, I have photos, but they all have people in them, and I don’t post family and friend photos on here.

A couple of things I remember about this time:

It was very cold in the winter! I know we have snow in TX but it doesn’t last long. However here in Kansas it seemed the snow came before Thanksgiving and never melted off until after Valentine’s Day! I remember it finally, finally got up to 32 degrees F (freezing temp) and people were out in their summer clothes it felt so warm.

The summer was very hot, too, and that year there was a bumper crop of grasshoppers. They were everywhere – just hordes of them.

And … I found out I was expecting another baby! 🙂

Next up – time to move back home for a little while.

Here are a few photos of snow we’ve had over the years.

  • Tree and wooden bench in our front yard
  • Evergreen tree covered in snow (from my childhood home)
  • Snow & ice bending tree branches to the ground while our dog walks under (many years ago)
  • View of snow in our back yard a few years ago after a blizzard (stick on penguin and snowman on the glass door)

Flower of the Day – Frosty Rose

A pastel orange rose, sprinkled with glitter or fake snow? Whatever it is, I like it. The tag said it was Enchanted Rose.

Snowflake on Samsung One UI 1.5

These are the FOTD flowers I posted exactly one year ago, 4/14/19.

They look like white spider mums, and white lilies.

Funny, because I was looking for white flowers because we had some snow overnight!

This is the photo Cee provided:

It looks like a stark, winter scene with bare branched trees, and a snowy road going past.

This is my photo:

Our front yard tree, with bare branches covered in snow and ice, and the road in front of our house, which is snow-packed.

Christmas Memory # 14 – MMMBop & Snow

Christmas Memory # 14 – MMMBop & Snow Click to view

For the days up until Christmas I’ll be sharing some short memories of Christmases past that I remember.

***

This may be weird, but even on Christmas morning we sometimes listened to music, but not Christmas music. It was usually rock songs, of whatever music album, cassette, or CD that one of us had gotten as a present that year.

On this day, my daughter had gotten the Hanson CD with the song MMMBop as one of the songs. We all like this song, so we put it on while we were opening presents. We put it on repeat, so it played over and over while we were rocking out and singing along. We call this our MMMBop Christmas because of that.

It was pretty cool too, that just as we started with all this, it started snowing heavily. Now that in itself was wonderful and exciting. The snow kept coming all morning with huge saucer shaped flakes, filling up the yards and streets. By the time we had to drive over to my Dad’s house for lunch and the family get together, we could barely see the roads, but we made it.

Definitely not a typical kind of Christmas day, but very memorable.

Feline Friday – Before & After

The day before we had the record snowfall last week, I took the photo of Little Orange Kitty enjoying the sunshine. Then the next day, we had 10 1/2 inches of snow. Looking out back, there was Sister Cat, walking on the fence. She was meowing at me & trying to get brave enough to jump down in all that snow to come to the porch to get something to eat. She finally did, after walking back & forth for awhile.
