Christmas Memory # 16 – Bits & Pieces

Christmas Memory # 16 – Bits & Pieces Click to view

For the days up until Christmas I’ll be sharing some short memories of Christmases past that I remember.

Just a few more short memories combined today, and over the weekend as I think of them. Then, since time is short coming up on Christmas Day, there will be one longer story, probably on Monday, and then a poem on Christmas Eve.

A few times I made my own Christmas cards to send to people. Some were on construction paper with cute stickers, or ink stamps, and others were paintings done in acrylics of some holiday theme. In all cases, I’d write a poem or sentiment inside. I once was told these were their favorites to receive. It was fun to do, and I’m glad they liked them. Wish I had kept one for myself.

One night after doing our Christmas Eve shopping for everyone, I noticed a beautiful moon up in the sky – it had a halo around it. I called my Dad to tell him to go out and look – and he did – even though it was around midnight. I knew he’d like it, because he’d made his own telescope years before, and we always looked at the sky together.

When I was still pretty little, I was positive I saw Santa Claus in our living room. It was dark in there except for the lights on the tree, and we had a big mirror in the living room. I could see into the mirror from my bedroom door, and definitely saw someone (Santa?) moving around in there. I kept quiet, though.

Every year our family got together to go look at the pretty Christmas lights around town. There would be several car loads of us following each other. Then later we’d meet up at one of our houses for hot chocolate and snacks.

A favorite memory was when I was already grown up. Everyone came to my Mom & Dad’s house for Christmas snacks and fun. We all decided it would be fun to sing all the Christmas songs we could think of. So, several days before the get-together I typed up the words to the songs – enough for everyone to have a page. I used carbon paper to get all those copies! We sure enjoyed the singing that year.

Today we are asked to post about a song that brings back a happy memory.

This song is a bluesy, and somewhat sad song, but I have a good memory of it.

I love all Elton John’s songs, so have good memories of most of them, as well as most other songs. I’ve posted so many on here, so it was a bit hard to find one I hadn’t talked about.

You know when you’re at the grocery store, and you hear the store’s speakers playing songs? I admit, I sing along to them as I’m going up and down the aisles. I even see the store’s workers singing along to songs, too. This being one of my favorite songs that my daughter and I like to hear, we were going along singing this song, really loud, and sort of dancing around. It was fun. 🙂

“I Guess Why They Call It the Blues”, by Elton John, was released as a single from the album, “Too Low for Zero”, in 1983. It was written by Elton John, Bernie Taupin, andDavey Johnstone, and is on the label Rocket and Geffen (US).

Don’t wish it away
Don’t look at it like it’s forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better

And while I’m away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won’t be long before you and me run
To the place in our hearts where we hide

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues

Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget I’m your man

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
