Christmas Memory # 17 – More Bits & Pieces

For the days up until Christmas I’ll be sharing some short memories of Christmases past that I remember.

Just a few more short memories combined today, as I think of them. Then, since time is short coming up on Christmas Day, there will be one longer story, probably on Monday, and then a poem on Christmas Eve.

***

Most years on Christmas Eve night, we’d go to my Granny & Grand-dad’s house. There we’d get together with relatives that we didn’t get to see all that often, from Oklahoma, and New Mexico. We’d have a nice home-made supper, and then open gifts. Later all the cousins would play cards at the kitchen table, while the grown-ups talked and played dominoes (42) on card tables in the living room. That was always fun.

Christmas morning, we’d be at home and get up really early to see what Santa had brought, then open our gifts from under the tree. Later, for lunch, we’d go to my Grand-ma & Grand-pa’s house to meet with other relatives, and have more gifts to unwrap, and then eat a big Christmas lunch. (my story on Monday will be about this)

One year right before Christmas a friend of my husband and myself came over with a gift. That was unusual as we never did the gift exchange with him. So, I opened the box. It was an outfit of black stretchy pants & top that has tiny silver threads running through it. It of course didn’t fit. So I gave it back. Now this is the bad part … much later we found out that the gift was from a bunch of presents he’d stolen from under someone’s tree that year.

For a long time one of my favorite traditions was to make cut out Christmas cookies. I have cookie cutters in all kinds of Christmas, and other shapes. The recipe made several dozens of cookies, and it took most all of the day to get them baked, and then decorated. I haven’t done this in quite awhile, though. Some years I did it all by myself, and other years my girls would help with the decorating.

~

I think this will be all of these for now, but Monday will be the story I wrote about Grandma’s Christmas Kitchen.

Another few remembrances of when I’d go stay at my Granny’s house in the summer time, when I was a kid.

My granny had a big collection of all kinds of small & souvenir pitchers. I guess she just liked them, and we always knew what to get her for birthdays and Christmas…another pitcher. I don’t know what happened to them all, except for a couple that I have. Every time I see them I think of her.

I liked washing dishes at my Granny’s house. Well, I just always have liked to wash dishes where ever I am. Mostly because they have different dishes than we did at home, so it was fun.

***

In the living room my grandparents had an old timey cabinet stereo. It had a radio, and a turntable that played 78 rpm records.

***

Both my Granny & Grand-dad had birthdays in July, so we’d celebrate both by going over there bringing a pound cake & vanilla ice cream.

I know my Granny always had coffee, too, and she’d pour a little bit into a saucer and blow on it to cool, then drink from the saucer. There is an old saying – ‘saucered and blowed’. That’s what she did.

We always went to Granny’s house for Christmas Eve with my dad’s side of the family. Usually relatives from Oklahoma and New Mexico came in, too. There was good food, presents, and fun. The grown-ups would get out the dominoes for games of 42, while my cousins and I would play card games at the kitchen table.

And … I keep remembering more things, so one more tomorrow! 🙂

All we’ve done today has been pretty fun.

We all went out to my cousin’s and aunt’s farm.

We all ate lunch there, and we all enjoyed seeing each other, and having nice conversations and laughs.

Then, we all trooped out to the chicken yard, to see…well, the chickens, all the new baby chicks, turkeys, and pigeons (they are homing pigeons). There was the dog my cousin adopted from Africa, Gracie, and a couple of horses, some jack rabbits, and prairie dogs. We all had fun watching my grand-daughter feed the chickens their chicken feed. She was amazed by it all, and even petted some chickens. They are all mostly friendly chickens who don’t mind being picked up, and most all of them have names. Henrietta is the oldest one.

We all had a good time. It sure beats sitting in the house all day doing our usual nothing! 😉

Here are some photos from our day.
