Here are the questions and answers for the 13th and 14th…

Day 13 Question – Did any of the men in your family have big sideburns?

None that I know of.

Day 14 Question – Did you get into any of the toy/game crazes like Rubic’s Cube, Cabbage Patch Dolls, or anything like that?

These fads, or crazes you mention came along way after I was a kid, so I didn’t actually get too caught up in them. My girls, however had the Rubic’s Cube, and several of the Cabbage Patch Dolls.

For me, all I could think of is maybe the hula-hoop? That was a big deal back when I was a kid. We all had one it seemed. There is a vague memory of going on a field trip with a group…maybe from school, or Girl Scouts/Brownies? to a hula-hoop factory in our town. I kind of remember seeing that, and that we were all given one when we finished the tour. Maybe we did that, or maybe it was just me wishing that would happen! haha I don’t know.

I don’t remember any other toy or game I was crazy about, just the usual ones we had, we liked.

Q – When did you first have a microwave in your home? Were you afraid it would make you sick, or did you embrace this ‘new’ technology?

I think when I was in maybe Jr. High School (when I was taking homemaking class), we took a field trip to a place called the extension center? Not sure, really, but they demonstrated a microwave oven for us. We were very impressed.

Many years later, say around the early 80s, we did get a microwave. It was one of the huge ones. I can’t remember us going to buy it, or if it was a Christmas gift, or what, but we had it a long time. I don’t think I was scared it would make us sick, even though the whole idea of it was strange. I liked that it cooked food really fast.

There was one house we rented, where it didn’t come with appliances. We had our own refrigerator, but no stove. All we had was the big microwave to cook with. We cooked just about everything in there, and it turned out good. We also had one of those popcorn making appliances, with the big yellow dome, and the wire arm that spun around…oh yeah, it was called the Stir Crazy. haha…we cooked on that, too. We cooked fried eggs, scrambled eggs, and made pancakes on it. We took the spinning around arm off though, first. 🙂

Well, that big old microwave lasted a long time, then we lost it! When we moved, we had all our things put in storage for awhile. My husband got stationed in Korea for a year, so the kids and I went back to stay with family. When we moved again, to get our things back, a lot of stuff was missing. The microwave was no more. We did get other ones over the years, but they were smaller ones, and we had an actual stove to cook on by then. 🙂

Q – Today is labor day in the United States. How old were you when you got your first job? What was that job? did you enjoy it?

I was probably 17/18 when I got my first job where I got a paycheck. I was still in high school, and taking office education. We were able to go to school half a day, and get a job and work half a day, which counted in our studies.

This job was at a place called Retco Manufacturing. I’m not sure what the minimum wage was back in 1967/68, but might have been $1.25 an hour? They made irrigation equipment back in the building. I worked in the office, though. I did typing mostly. There was an office lady that showed me what to do. Actually there wasn’t a lot, so we both ate snacks, and read magazines quite a bit. 🙂 It was a fun job.

I do remember what I bought with my very first paycheck! I went to Sears and bought a pretty, real leather handbag/purse. I’d seen it and wanted it for awhile. Can’t remember how much it cost, though. I bought a white, long-sleeved blouse, with front ruffles, too. The blouse is long gone, but I actually still have that purse! It’s a little worse for wear these days, and I keep some sewing supplies in it now. Here’s a picture I took of it just this afternoon. (surprised I could find it so easily, but it was right there where I knew it would be.)
