A to Z BLOG CHALLENGE 2016 – LETTER P 4bd62ad9-ea74-4273-967b-7c426c911c61 IMG_2559

For today’s letter to write about, we have the letter P.

It probably won’t come as a surprise to you, that I’m writing about the Peace Sign.

Letter P is for…Peace Sign

The Peace Sign is a symbol for peace, and is recognized world-wide. This logo was designed back in 1958, by Gerald Holtom, a British man, who was well known for his designs for other things. He was asked to design a new logo for the CND, which was the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. After much thought, Mr. Holtom remembered that the semaphore letters, made by different flag positions, and liked the look of the letters N and D. They would stand for the campaign, so he put them together, with the resulting image of the peace sign. When he turned it upside down, it too had meaning for him. It resembled the tree of life, with hope and resurrection, and also looked like a person’s arms stretched upward, which in semaphore meant the letter U. He figured the letter U could stand for Unilateral, as in Unilateral Nuclear Disarmament, too. (source: Wikipedia)

So, his design for the logo was accepted, and is now well known.

SHARE YOUR WORLD – # 48sywbanner

Here’s this week’s questions posed by Cee at Share Your World and my answers. There are lots of fun challenges to choose from there!

Q1 – Are you a hugger or non-hugger?

I am a hugger. I like giving and receiving hugs. Our family has always been like that. We hug hello, then again when we say good-bye, all around for everyone. Sometimes more than one hug, and even if we just met someone. I’ve never had anyone say they’d rather not. If they did, I wouldn’t, but it’s just a way of being friendly.

Q2 – What’s your favorite topping on pizza?

Besides cheese, I need pepperoni, mushrooms, and onions. I’ll eat the ones with lots of other things on there, except sausage or hamburger…don’t like those, so will pick those parts off.

Q3 – If you were the original designer of one existing corporate logo, which one would you select?

Not sure if this is corporate or not, but I wish I’d have designed the Peace sign. It is simple, recognizable all over the world, and means so much. Looking up who the actual designer was, I found it was in 1958, that a British designer, Gerald Holtom, was asked to design a logo for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). He looked at the semaphore alphabet letters for N and D, and it looked like what we now know as the peace sign.

Q4 – Complete this sentence: Where I can seek my solace is…

Home, my home, with my family, wherever that may be. We’ve lived here and there around the world, and we come and go, but we always come back home, where we can relax, and be ourselves around our loved ones.
