Interesting questions from Melanie, and some answers from me. Join in the fun – click the above link for details. 🙂

***

  1. Is copying and pasting images or information off the Internet plagiarism?   Do you credit those whose work you ‘borrow freely’ or do you think the idea is repugnant?   (Credit for this question goes to GC and Sue)

It depends. If you copy someone’s photo or words and claim them as your own – that is a definite theft. If it’s a logo or badge for a challenge heading I’m pretty sure that is allowed. I try to give credit when I use something, even if it says it’s free to use.

  1. Do you let sleeping dogs lie?

Two ways to look at this … if you want to avoid an argument, then yes, leave it alone. If it’s talking about a real puppy dog, well, most times leave it to it’s nap, but our dogs (when we had them) didn’t mind us giving them a hug when they were sleeping.

  1. What’s the strangest pet name (for adults) that you’ve ever heard someone called?

Most all pet names are silly. Some are endearing, and loving, while others are downright insulting. One I know someone used to use was ‘Dummy’, and they meant it just like that.

  1. Do you like to dance?   If yes, what’s your favorite and if no, why not?

I’ve danced a little bit, but mostly in the living room. We used to go to a dance now and again. I wasn’t good at it, and never really liked it.

Sometimes I go down the line of my email notices, taking a few random words just to see what I can come up with. This is one of them from recent days.  I call these type my ‘found poetry’, and there are other ways to find poetry to create. You can take words from the emails, or from Twitter, or from cross-word puzzles, or even pick out random words from a book. It’s fun.

Sometimes they make sense, and sometimes they are a bit strange, but always fun to try. 🙂

Just a couple of photos of the coming sunset on Sunday, November 10, 2019, at 5:55 p.m.

Looking out my back door I could see blue sky with a few clouds tinted pink. It looked pretty through the tree branches of the house behind us. Then a flock of geese came flying by. 🙂

What Happened to Old Clothes? – NaNoPoblano 2019 – Day # 9

You know, sometimes I get to thinking about some of the clothes I’ve had over the years, and wondering whatever happened to them. I don’t still have them, so where did they go?

If they were totally worn out, I’m sure I threw them away. If I was just tired of them, and they were still good, I know I donated them to the thrift stores collections.

But others, I just don’t know.

I remember some for liking them a lot, or because of some memory they hold. For two examples, I had a couple of dresses I hated. This was back when I was in elementary school. I didn’t have much choice in my clothes back then, as my mom bought them, so I wore them.

One was a pretty sky blue shift type dress, with shoulder epaulets of a multi-color fabric. It was okay, but I got teased from other kids that it made me look like a football player with big shoulders. I tried not to wear it very much.

Another was blue and white, dropped waist with plaid. It had a little collar and a plaid tie in front. That was another I didn’t like, because I figured girls didn’t wear ties. I (in secret) yanked on that tie until it ripped the whole thing apart. Never had to wear it again.

Years later, I sewed my own clothes after I learned how. I liked all of them, as they were my own creation. I got to choose the pattern and fabric. I even combined patterns to make original, new kinds of clothes.

I had one dress I really liked, but it got stolen. This was after I was married. I wore it to a relative’s house we were visiting for a week or so. I know who did it – my husband’s cousin – but I couldn’t prove it.

Another thing got stolen off the clothesline. It was a black t-shirt that I’d done fabric painting on, of feathers, and added embellishments of real feathers and beads. A neighborhood kid stole it. Couldn’t prove that either, but his sister told me he did.

Anyway, it’s interesting what remains in our memories.

Moo in the Morning – NaNoPoblano 2019 – Day # 8

Moo in the Morning – NaNoPoblano 2019 – Day # 8

***

Place: In-law’s house in the country, or at least at the edge of their little town.

Year: Maybe around 1970 or so.

We lived in another state at the time, but would once in awhile make a trip down to see my in-laws. They moved around a lot, from one old house to another, so each time it was a different experience.

This place, as with most of the others was old fashioned, and run down. It had no air conditioning, as most of them didn’t. In the summer time in Texas, you really need one, though. They had portable fans, which only stirred the stultifying hot air around the rooms. We sweated – a lot.

I can’t remember what we found to do, exactly, but probably my husband went off with his dad to the mechanic shop. My MIL and Sister-In-Law and I stayed around the house. I do remember us making crafts out of colorful foam rubber – making those things we called ‘fridgies’. They had books of patterns to make. We’d cut the foam out, and attach little stick on magnets to the back. They were to be hung on the refrigerator as decorations. I made a butterfly.

At the evening time, I’m sure we cooked supper, and watched TV. I do remember some of those really old country western, black & white music variety shows. I really didn’t like that kind of music.

There wasn’t enough beds, so the mister slept on the couch, and I had to share with my MIL. Weird, of course. We’d bring the fan into the bedroom, and also the windows would be open, hoping for a breath of air. And, it does cool off a bit after dark.

First thing in the morning, after an uncomfortable night, it actually was nice for a few minutes.

The house was cooler, and dim in that time right before sunrise. We’d finally quit sweating, and so I would get up to look out the window. Only pasture land out there, and cows. The cows were close to the house and were mooing. Such a peaceful sound. There were also chickens clucking and roosters crowing.

That was my favorite memory of those days. The cows looking over the wire fence at me, and mooing. 🙂

NIGHT FLIGHT

Winter looms. They fly in under cover of a dark night in Autumn. The midnight moon casts shadows on the silvery pond far below. Silent stars guide them from above. Hundreds of their kind circle gracefully into the water, murmuring relief. Their southward journey is complete. The geese have arrived.

***

GEESE

We live right by a playa lake. From our back door we can see how it changes from season to season. My favorite time to look at the lake is fall through winter, into early spring.

That is when the Canada Geese fly in from the north. There are hundreds, if not thousands of the geese using the lake as a southern home base. Right around Thanksgiving, there are skeins of geese filling the skies, then landing on the lake. They come in a few groups at a time, until there are so many, we can barely see any water, as the geese have filled it.

They are a noisy bunch, too. Making their distinctive honking sound when they are flying, when they land, and when they take to the air again, isn’t enough for them, it seems. Whether just paddling around in the water, or on the shore, they are ‘talking’ about something. We can even hear them in the middle of the night. When they do take flight again, there are so many of them, all honking, it even prevents us hearing the television, until they have gone on their way. I look out the back door, and see them flying right over the houses, their shadows cast on the ground. It is amazing that they don’t crash into each other, as the sky is filled with them.

They have a fairly predictable schedule. They fly to the grain fields, or to other nearby lakes, during part of the day. Then they come back to this one to sleep awhile, heads tucked under their wings. About five in the evening, though, they leave once more. Later, around midnight, they fly in again for the overnight.

This goes on for about four months, then day by day we notice there fewer geese around. They have flown north, again. We look forward to when they return in the fall.
