RDP – Jinx Caprice

For the Ragtag Daily Prompt, we are challenged with the word ‘caprice’.

This story is one I’ve shared before, but every time I hear the word I think of this horrible jinx car we had.

JINX CAR

We owned a jinx car. Yes, we did. It was a pre-owned ’66 or ’67 Chevrolet Caprice. A big, old, boat of a car, with plush overstuffed seats, electric windows, and temperature controlled air conditioning. I despised that car.

The day we test drove it, it shimmied all over the highway. I think the wheels needed alignment, or something. We bought it, anyway.

First of all, I didn’t even want a different car. We traded in our ’65 Mustang (which I loved), for this monstrosity. Strike one…Strike two…the wheel thing…and well, the strikes kept coming. One thing or another was always wrong with it. You name it, it needed repairs.

When I first drove it up to where I worked at the time, everyone wanted to see our new car. So, out to the parking lot we all went. One girl was not impressed. She took me aside to tell me…this car is a jinx. Seems this very car had just been traded in by her grandparents, and they’d had nothing but trouble from it. I guess back then there were no ‘lemon’ laws or disclosure rules.

Anyway, the jinx car lived up to it’s reputation. We had it for awhile, costing us more in repairs than it was worth. Then, after coming home from overseas, I got that car out of storage. I got rid of it…traded it in…yes, I did. I was surprised the car lot people even gave me a dime for it.

I immediately bought another car that I loved…a ’69 Camaro. Now, that was a car. I looked much better driving a cool Camaro around town, in my twenties, instead of the old jinx car, for sure. And I don’t remember the new one giving us a bit of trouble!

Thank you for reading! Hope you enjoyed hearing about the jinx car!

Here we have this week’s SYW questions from Melanie.

***

What, in your opinion, is the point to life?

No idea. Just enjoy the beauty of nature, be kind to animals & people, try to live an honest life as best you can.

What was your most recent lie?  You don’t have to get really specific obviously.

I probably have said that some food tasted good, when it really wasn’t all that great.

What country do you consider the strangest?   (it’s all In fun folks, ALL countries may seem strange to outsiders)

They are all strange in their own way, if you aren’t used to their customs. That just makes them interesting.

What’s your funniest story involving a car?

There’s lots of weird stories about our cars, but this one I’ll never forget. It was our jinx car, an old 4 door Chevy Caprice (blue). We’d got it, and immediately had troubles with everything. I drove it to my work place and the people wanted to see our new ride, and as soon as one girl saw it she said, “That’s the jinx car!” Turns out some people they knew had just traded it in because of all the troubles they had with it, and now she recognized it as being a jinx. And it sure was for us, too.

What bother me the most was that to get this awful jinx car, we’d traded in our Mustang, which I loved.

I myself traded in the jinx car later on for a Camaro. I was happy again.

JINX CAR

Before being on Word Press I was posting over on the Blogger site. Sometimes, I like to transfer some posts from there to here, because honestly, almost no one ever saw/read them over there. This is one of those. I wrote it for the A to Z Blog Challenge – Letter J, on April 11, 2014. 🙂

Hey, 19th day of the 19 challenge! 🙂

Q – What was your favorite kind of car when you were young? Did yu ever get ot have one of your own?

My favorite kind of car was the Ford Mustang. I did have one, a 1965 blue one! My other favorite was a Camaro. I had one of those, too. Wish I still had them. Here’s a photo of the Mustang. 🙂 We had it up until the time we traded it in for the horrible Jinx car.  The photo looks kinda weird; it’s a photo of a photo of the car. I can’t remember if I have a picture of the Camaro, but it was a deep burgundy, with black top. It had an 8-track tape deck in there, and I went right out and bought a Simon & Garfunkle tape to play in it. 🙂
