dVerse Prosery # 2 – The Moon

Prosery #2

***

This is for dVerse Poets. To find out more, click the above link.

The instructions are from Sarah, and the poem the line is taken from is called, “Full Moon”, by Alice Oswald.

The Prosery prompt starts with a line taken from a poem, and asks you to write a piece of flash fiction incorporating that line, in full, somewhere in the piece of prose. To make it a little more challenging there’s a word limit of 144 words.

I dreamt I was the moon

They say the moon is made of cheese, but I don’t believe it any more.

Back when I was a kid, my dad built his own telescope. I loved watching him grind the lenses, taking a large white plumbing pipe, and putting it all together. He checked out books from the library to find out how to do it.

When it was finished, we took it outside on dark nights to gaze up at the stars, the planets, and the moon. The moon’s craters were beautifully shadowed against the bright reflective moon light.

My imagination went wild, thinking of other worlds in the universe. If I could just reach out there … touch them.

Visions filled me with wonder as I fell asleep.

I dreamt I was the moon.

And the truth was revealed. The moon was not made of cheese. I know that now.

MANIC MONDAY – # 2 – IMAGINE

Today is the second week of a new challenge, from Sandi. Her blog, “Flip Flops Every Day” can be found at the above link. It sounds like fun, so here’s my try at it. If you’d like to join in, just click the above link to find out details. (hint…hint…there are no rules besides using the chosen title of the weekly song in your post. 🙂

Thanks for the fun challenge, Sandi!

Today, for Manic Monday # 2, we have the word prompt, ‘Imagine’. Sandi used the song, “Imgine”, by John Lennon, to get us started thinking about the prompt!

What would it be like, if we had no imagination. I believe it would be a dull world indeed. 🙂

First, I thought of the TV show, “The Twilight Zone”. I always liked it, because it was a bit creepy, and presented some wonderful little stories of regular people, having an especially weird day. My kind of show! I tried thinking of the opening words to the show, and of course the music that is so identifiable. I thought it started out…’Imagine, if you will…’, but then I looked it up, and here’s one of the beginning narrations (there were several versions), and I believe the creator of the show, Rod Serling, also said the words to the quote. This is from the Wikiquote page article. https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/The_Twilight_Zone_(1959_TV_series)

You are traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. Your next stop, the Twilight Zone!

The Twilight Zone (19591965) is an American television series created by Rod Serling. The original series ran for five seasons on CBS from 1959 to 1964 and remains in syndication to this day.

Next, I thought about this song, by the Turtles, because it has the word imagine in the lyrics.

***

“Happy Together”, by the Turtles, was released in 1967, from the album, “Happy Together”. It is on the White Whale label, and was written by Alan Gordon & Garry Bonner.

Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it’s only right
To think about the girl you love and hold her tight
So happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together

I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life
When you’re with me, baby the skies’ll be blue
For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you
For all my life
When you’re with me, baby the skies’ll be blue
For all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba
Ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they toss the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you, and you for me
So happy together

So happy together
How is the weather
So happy together
We’re happy together
So happy together
Happy together
So happy together
So happy together (ba-ba-ba-ba ba-ba-ba-ba)

NABLOPOMO – # 5 … “LET THE SKELETONS DANCE”

Standard

NABLOPOMO – # 5 … “LET THE SKELETONS DANCE”NaBloPoMo_2015

Today is the fifth day of posting for the month long NaBloPoMo challenge. What I’ve done today is what I would call a Prose Poem. That is a poem, that is written as prose…a  combination of the two. I’ve also used enjambment…a continuation of a sentence over a line break…a bit of poetic trickery to pull the reader into the next line. This was also posted in dVerse Poets

~

LET THE SKELETONS DANCE

They need to come together…be joined…connected somehow. How does it work? All

the ideas, the words…the bones? Joining together the words…ripped from your ideas…your soul…

Disjointed, flopping, flailing, clacking, bleeding upon one another…the bones

of your poem.

They all want your attention…to be the backbone…the one that holds all the words in a cohesive oneness.

It’s a group effort. You have to understand – do you?

Place a boneword in the wrong place, it won’t make sense…though some are not meant to make sense, I fear…

At least to me…

Gather them up…all the ingredients. Place them on the page…just so. Does it walk, talk, speak to you, or does it

Fall to pieces in places?

Is there a special magic…a sprinkling of glitter and good luck that is needed? Maybe…

The words are good, the ideas are there, the emotion of the piece is there…yet, all together the

Skeleton of your poem is lifeless…

What is needed is heart…a beating heart, to revive it, to infuse that zing…that spark of life.

Knowledge…a brain…it has lost it’s way. It knows not where it is going…where does it belong?

The knowledge of form and structure…the skeleton…the brain will tell the bones where they belong.

There will be rogues…O loveable renegades…

Some will need to be shoved into place, some will need to be pried out of position…rearranged…

Against their will.

Do it…just do it…whip those bones into shape. Make that skeleton dance.

Dance to the tune of your imagination…

Then…set those bones free.

WRITING 101 – TAKE A CUE

WRITING 101 – TAKE A CUEcropped-seal_v2-03

For yesterday’s #15 assignment, we were presented with several different prompts to use, if we wanted. One was to take a cue from our readers, as to what suggestions they may have had to write about. I didn’t get any answers. So, that being the case, there were several quotes and prompts we could use, and what we thought of them.

I chose to combine two of these to elaborate on.

  1. Have you received a message in a fortune cookie that moved you?
  2. Describe a life-changing experience with a book.

I had a fortune cookie message one time, that I stuck up on my refrigerator. It stayed on there for a long time. I still have it somewhere, but I’d taken all the magnets and slips of paper, pictures, and cartoons off, when we had to get a new refrigerator. I can’t remember where I put them, though. Anyway, the message said: “Tap into your imagination, it provides interesting results”.

I sure believe that to be true. It works for everyone, of course, but I think especially for writers. If we didn’t tap into our imaginations, there wouldn’t be many unique stories out there for people to read.

Which brings me to the second prompt, about the book. What life-changing experience did I have? Since reading that one book, I started writing more and more, using my imagination for all types of writing projects, but one specific one that’s lasted years. I’m happy to say that’s pretty life-changing.

The book is “Lost Souls” by Poppy Z. Brite. I read it when it first came out, back in 1992, and there probably hasn’t been a day I haven’t thought about it since. It had everything I like to read about in a book…wonderful characters, horror, paranormal, funny parts, and serious subjects. I hated when I was finished reading it, and it was over. There was a sort of sequel, though, with mentions of the characters, and more added for this second book by the same author, “Drawing Blood”.

So, not wanting either of them to end, I used my imagination to continue the stories, in my own way…I wrote fan-fiction, combining them both.

Another thing all this caused me to do, was start a blog for the first time. I wanted to write my fan-fiction there, for others to hopefully read. So far I’ve posted 221 episodes/installments of it. It’s called “Two Souls: Into the Fire”. Check it out if you’d like. 2013 … http://ghostmmnc.blogspot.com (in the side menu of the blog choose 2013 to go to the first post of this)

In the end, I’d say my imagination has been occupied and challenged for quite a while, and it’s been fun.

Why not tap into your imagination. It will provide interesting results.

WRITING 101 … VIGNETTEcropped-seal_v2-03

Today we were to write in the style of a vignette. This is a collection of brief scenes, possibly from different viewpoints, that all tie into the same theme of the piece.

I AM…

I am the paper

I am the blank screen

I live to be used

Use me

Just write…

I am your muse

I am your imagination

I am here to serve you

Use me

Just write…

I own the paper and blank screen

I am the owner of my mind

Use them

Just write…

TASTING A DREAM

Standard

TASTING A DREAM

What do your dreams taste like?

Are they cotton candy sweet?

Do you fly among the puffy clouds,

the Earth beneath your feet?

Could be your dreams are spicy…

Some really steamy scenes.

A pepper pot of passion…

Makes you wonder what they mean.

Would you say your dreams are salty?

Are you swimming in the sea?

In your midnight movie REM,

What character will you be?

Your dreams are made of many things…

Your visions may be stellar…

So, enjoy the pictures in the night…

Now…do you hear in color?
