This is a post I had on September 10, 2015. I think it was a writing assignment called, ‘Writing 101 – Photograph Inspiration’. We were to look at the provided photo, and write something about it. Here’s what I wrote, and it had a few views and likes (maybe 5?) Anyway, here it is again – enjoy! 🙂

WRITING 101 … PHOTOGRAPH INSPIRATION

Today, the 4th assignment, we were shown 4 pictures, all interesting. We were to pick one to write whatever we wanted to about the picture, in whatever style you wanted. Here is my interpretation of this picture, in a short fiction piece.

ABANDONEDGOMY9CQSvmjKLxigsfxg_Attic

The late summer’s, afternoon sun has made the attic room at the top of the stairs unbearably hot. I’m already sweating from climbing the rickety, wooden stairs…upward into that sauna of an attic room.

Pausing in the doorway, I take a long look around. There’s nothing much to see…an unadorned window, framed in weathered wood, the slanted wall boards, giving this area of the room a tri-angular shape.

There is no hint in daylight of what is to come at nightfall.

I make my way back down the narrow stairway, taking note of the steps that creak. I must remember not to step on them later. The house is over a hundred years old…now abandoned in it’s declining years. There are spider webs in the shadowy corners, and dust particles make me sneeze. I must remember to wear a mask, when I return.

Sweat now trickles down my forehead, and my t-shirt is soaked. There are signs of mice living here…the only living creatures, besides the spiders, to call this place their home. I hear a skittering behind a wall, and smile. I’m not afraid of the mice. They’ll keep me company tonight, as I search for the abandoned souls of the dead.

For I am a ghost hunter…this is what I do.

There are a lot of songs with these words and thoughts in the titles or lyrics. I did find this one though, and I remember hearing it quite a lot way back when. It’s a funny one about a haunted house.

The song’s story goes that the person moves into a haunted house, and he meets up with a very strange spook. He tells the spook that nothing is going to scare him away, and he’ll still be there when the morning comes. 🙂

***

“Haunted House”, by ‘Jumpin’ Gene Simmons, was released in 1964. It became his first and only top 40 hit record, and was what he was best known for.  It was his cover of a 1958 Johnny Fuller song. Many artists also covered this one, including Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs, Jerry Lee Lewis, and it’s originator, Johnny Fuller.

I just moved in my new house today
Movin’ was hard but I got squared away
Bells started ringin’ and chains rattled loud
I knew I’d moved in a haunted house

Still I made up in my mind to stay
Nothin’ was a-gonna drive me away
When I seen somethin’ that give me the creep
Had one big eye and a-two big feet

I stood right still and I did the freeze
He did the stroll right up to me
Made a noise with his feet that sound like a drum
(Say, you’ll be here when the mornin’ come?)

Say yes, I’ll be here when the mornin’ come
I’ll be right here and I ain’t gonna run
I bought this house now you know I am bold
Ain’t no haint gonna run me off

In my kitchen my stove was a-blazin’ hot
The coffee was a-boilin’ in the pot
The grease had melted in my hand
I had a hunk of meat in my hand

From outer space there sat a man
On a hot stove with the pots and pans
“Say, that’s hot” I began to shout
He drank a hot coffee right from the spout

Drank a hot grease from the fryin’ pan
He said to me “Now, you better run”
(And don’t be here when the mornin’ come)

Say yes, I’ll be here when the mornin’ come
I’ll be right here and I ain’t gonna run
I bought this house now you know I am bold

My Mission – Ghost Hunt – A to Z Blog Challenge 2019 – Letter M #AtoZChallenge 2019 Tenth Anniversary blogging from A to Z challenge letter M

I’d never tried this before, but it was my mission to find out if I could do it … ghost hunting!

I’ve always had crazy, unexplained thing happen in the houses I’ve lived in, even this house I live in now. These incidents happened in the house I grew up in, my grandmother’s house, and houses I lived in when we moved to other states, and have been pretty common. I’ve related some of those stories in my other posts here.

Up until recently, I’d never heard of people going on ghost hunting adventures, but I’ve seen the TV shows, and have read a lot on the subject. I decided that I would conduct one of my own, right here in the house, as this is where lots of weirdness happens.

As I am totally an amateur at this, I just used the equipment I had available, and the knowledge of how an investigation should go. I’ve found what to look for in photos, what to listen for on recordings, and the terminology. It is all so interesting. So, recently, I set up an EVP session. That is Electronic Voice Phenomenon…recording on tape, a spirit voice.

Weird things happen in my house, so why not try to get some evidence right here? I get my little tape recorder, my scanner, some old antiques, and go into the bedroom. This is the bedroom where the heavy mirror levitated and then fell to the floor and broke. (in the story ‘Identified Flying Objects’) If there were spirits in this room, I wanted to find out.

The antiques were there, just in case something was hovering around or attached to them…some entity from beyond. The police scanner, I used for some background white noise. I set it on a frequency that was just static.

After setting the stage, by placing everything on the bed, I turned on the recorder, and I spoke aloud to whomever was present. I said if anyone is here, feel free to speak. Then, I left the room, closing the door. Out in the main part of the house, all was quiet. The cats were all asleep, and I had the tv turned off, and no music was playing. I left the recorder going for about 30 minutes. I couldn’t wait any longer to find out if I’d ‘caught’ anything on tape.

Putting on headphones, I began listening to the recording. At first, it was just the static noise from the scanner. The white noise seemed to go on forever…but then, I heard a voice! For real! I rewound the tape, listening again, and again. The same thing, the same phrase repeated every single time. There was only the one instance, nothing before this and nothing after. It is difficult to make out EVPs, but when you do get a voice, there’s no mistaking it.

Here’s what I heard… “I’m coming back” or “I’ll be coming back”.

As I said, it is hard to make out the exact words, but that is what it sounded like, to me. Over and over, I heard the same phrase. I took a few pictures in the room, just in case I would see something weird, but I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.

Later, I took a picture of the broken mirror that had flew around this room. It had been out in the garage for a long time, in not great conditions, with the dust and all out there. However, I did see what I thought was an orb, a roundish spot of light, that shouldn’t have been there. I did send it to a professional ghost hunter I know, to have her evaluate it. It was just as I expected, though…just dust floating around the air. Maybe another time I will get something on film.

Anyway, that was my experience of ghost hunting in my own house. I’m convinced there is something here…something unknown. It doesn’t scare me, or bother me at all. I’m just very aware of strange things going on here. I do have more crazy things to tell. I’ll be adding more of my true ghost stories, in coming days.

Have you had any paranormal experiences? I’d love to hear them!

I accomplished my mission … have you?

Here’s me looking for ghosts at a known haunted house in town (not ours), and the house. I was peeking in the window at the other side of this house. When I took the picture I was outside looking in, and my reflection was in an old mirror on the antique dresser inside.

Poem # 10

HAUNTED HOUSE

~

Behold the haunted house

Behold the haunted house

Twisted black branches scrape frosty windows

Twisted black branches scrape frosty windows

Haunted branches scrape

Twisted black house, the frosty windows behold

*

Shutters flap in Autumn winds

Shutters flap in Autumn winds

Dry leaves go skittering by

Dry leaves go skittering by

Shutters in Autumn go skittering

Dry winds flap by leaves

*

Ghosts moan while chains rattle

Ghosts moan while chains rattle

Do you dare enter tonight

Do you dare enter tonight

Do you moan while Ghosts rattle chains

Tonight dare enter

*

Behold, frosty Ghosts, in chains, go skittering by windows

The twisted winds dare scrape you dry

Tonight black Autumn leaves rattle haunted branches

Do enter house, while shutters flap…moan

Today’s color to match is just plain green. Join in the fun…find out how by clicking the link above.

Here we have Gretchen (RIP) our cat under the Christmas tree. She was a quirky kitty, with a tortoiseshell’s cattitude. Her pretty green eyes noticed everything, and she loved eating olives.

Next is the old historic house at the Ranching Heritage Center here in town. It’s reputed to be haunted.

Then, we have a friend’s child (many years ago), playing miniature golf. 🙂

This old house is said to be haunted. Sometimes the ghostly image of a woman can be seen peering out of the upper story window. The house was moved from it’s original location, to the Ranching Heritage Center grounds, here in town. The RHC is a type of museum celebrating the settling of the ranchers in this area. There are many more old houses, and artifacts here that you can visit.
