Christmas Memory # 17 – More Bits & Pieces

For the days up until Christmas I’ll be sharing some short memories of Christmases past that I remember.

Just a few more short memories combined today, as I think of them. Then, since time is short coming up on Christmas Day, there will be one longer story, probably on Monday, and then a poem on Christmas Eve.

***

Most years on Christmas Eve night, we’d go to my Granny & Grand-dad’s house. There we’d get together with relatives that we didn’t get to see all that often, from Oklahoma, and New Mexico. We’d have a nice home-made supper, and then open gifts. Later all the cousins would play cards at the kitchen table, while the grown-ups talked and played dominoes (42) on card tables in the living room. That was always fun.

Christmas morning, we’d be at home and get up really early to see what Santa had brought, then open our gifts from under the tree. Later, for lunch, we’d go to my Grand-ma & Grand-pa’s house to meet with other relatives, and have more gifts to unwrap, and then eat a big Christmas lunch. (my story on Monday will be about this)

One year right before Christmas a friend of my husband and myself came over with a gift. That was unusual as we never did the gift exchange with him. So, I opened the box. It was an outfit of black stretchy pants & top that has tiny silver threads running through it. It of course didn’t fit. So I gave it back. Now this is the bad part … much later we found out that the gift was from a bunch of presents he’d stolen from under someone’s tree that year.

For a long time one of my favorite traditions was to make cut out Christmas cookies. I have cookie cutters in all kinds of Christmas, and other shapes. The recipe made several dozens of cookies, and it took most all of the day to get them baked, and then decorated. I haven’t done this in quite awhile, though. Some years I did it all by myself, and other years my girls would help with the decorating.

I think this will be all of these for now, but Monday will be the story I wrote about Grandma’s Christmas Kitchen.

MORE JIGSAW PUZZLE FUN

I guess you can tell, I like doing jigsaw puzzles. Here are the last few I’ve done. 🙂

***

This one was fun. I’d say it took a medium amount of time to finish it. (the Mister helped with this one, too). It was just called “Made in America”, and showed people picking apples.

***

This one is one of a series of illustrations from the Saturday Evening Post magazine. This one is called, “Leading Ladies”. I thought it had lots of interesting pieces, but found out it was so hard to put together, I couldn’t finish it. It was 1,000 pieces, and they were each and every one the same size and shape! Nope, couldn’t do it. The photo shows as far as I got before giving it a pass.

This puzzle was fun to do, as it had pictures of all kinds of board games. It was 1,000 pieces, too, but they were bigger, and all different shapes. That made it easier, so didn’t take as long to finish. It is called, “Games We Played.”

This is the one I’m working on now. It is the same brand as the one above, and is called, “Tasty Treats”, with pictues of snacks! 🙂 I’ve just barely started it, so far.

DEAR DIARY … JUNE 16, 1961

GE DIGITAL CAMERA

Dear Diary,

I played.

At night B (my aunt) came over.

~

Well, that was a short one. What would I have been playing? Looking at the next couple of entries, this day here would have been a Friday. Probably, I would have gone to school during the day. I played a lot of the game of jacks. Maybe my cousins came over, too. If so, we would usually find lots of things to do, either in the house, or outside. There were no video games back then, so we used our imagination. 🙂

What games do you remember playing?
