Music, at its essence, is what gives us memories. And the longer a song has existed in our lives, the more memories we have of it. ~  Stevie Wonder

Like sunshine, music is a powerful force that can instantly and almost chemically change your entire mood. ~ Michael Franti

Music has healing power. It has the ability to take people out of themselves for a few hours.  ~ Elton John

It’s time for another Song Lyric Sunday. Today’s theme prompt is to find a song about freedom. This fits in with the 4th of July Holiday, but there are all kinds of freedom. We are blessed to live where freedom is a way of life, and we should never take it for granted.

Happy 4th of July – Independence Day! 🙂

“Philadelphia Freedom”, by Elton John, is a single, released in 1975. It was written by Elton John, and Bernie Taupin. The labels are MCA (US) and DJM (UK).

***

The song was written as a favor to Elton John’s friend, tennis star, Billie Jean King. She was part of the Philadelphia Freedoms tennis team. However…

This is a quote from the Wikipedia article about the song…and this is how I always thought of it, too.

~Some have interpreted “Philadelphia Freedom” as an American patriotic song, owing to patriotic lyrics such as “From the day I was born I waved the flag,” the history of Philadelphia as being symbolic with American ideals of freedom as Philadelphia was the site of the Constitutional Convention, houses the Liberty Bell and served as the first capitol of the United States, along with the song’s release, which coincided with the United States Bicentennial.[8]

I used to be a rolling stone you know
If a cause was right
I’d leave to find the answer on the road
I used to be a heart beating for someone
But the times have changed
The less I say the more my work gets done

‘Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I’ve waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee high to a man, yeah
Gave me a piece of mama, daddy never had

Oh Philadelphia freedom, shine on me, I love you
Shine the light, through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine the light, shine the light
Shine the light, won’t you shine the light
Philadelphia freedom, I love-ve-ve you, yes I do

If you choose to you can live your life alone
Some people choose the city (some people the city)
Some others choose the good old family home (some others choose a good old)
I like living easy without family ties (living easy)
Till the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me
Right between the eyes

‘Cause I live and breathe this Philadelphia freedom
From the day that I was born I’ve waved the flag
Philadelphia freedom took me knee high to a man
Mm mm, gave me a piece of mama, daddy never had

Oh Philadelphia freedom, shine on me, I love you
Shine the light, through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine the light, shine the light
Shine the light, won’t you shine the light
Philadelphia freedom, I love-ve-ve you, yes I do

Oh, Philadelphia freedom, shine on me, I love you
Shine the light, through the eyes of the ones left behind
Shine the light, shine the light
Shine the light, won’t you shine the light
Philadelphia freedom, I love-ve-ve,
You know I love-ve-ve , you know I love-ve-ve you
Yes I do, Philadelphia freedom
I love-ve-ve you
Yes I do, Philadelphia freedom
You know that I love-ve-ve you
Yes I do, Philadelphia freedom
Don’t you know that I love-ve-ve you
Yes I do, Philadelphia freedom
Don’t you know that I love-ve-ve you
Yes I do, Philadelphia freedom

Today we are asked to post about a song that brings back a happy memory.

This song is a bluesy, and somewhat sad song, but I have a good memory of it.

I love all Elton John’s songs, so have good memories of most of them, as well as most other songs. I’ve posted so many on here, so it was a bit hard to find one I hadn’t talked about.

You know when you’re at the grocery store, and you hear the store’s speakers playing songs? I admit, I sing along to them as I’m going up and down the aisles. I even see the store’s workers singing along to songs, too. This being one of my favorite songs that my daughter and I like to hear, we were going along singing this song, really loud, and sort of dancing around. It was fun. 🙂

Don’t wish it away
Don’t look at it like it’s forever
Between you and me I could honestly say
That things can only get better

And while I’m away
Dust out the demons inside
And it won’t be long before you and me run
To the place in our hearts where we hide

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues

Just stare into space
Picture my face in your hands
Live for each second without hesitation
And never forget I’m your man

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues

Wait on me girl
Cry in the night if it helps
But more than ever I simply love you
More than I love life itself

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
Time on my hands could be time spent with you
Laughing like children, living like lovers
Rolling like thunder under the covers
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues

And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
And I guess that’s why they call it the blues
