A to Z BLOG CHALLENGE 2016 – LETTER X4bd62ad9-ea74-4273-967b-7c426c911c61 IMG_2365

Today’s letter to write something about is X.

Letter X is for… Xavier Roberts

I’ll bet you’ve heard of Xavier Roberts, even if you’re not sure where, especially if you have daughters.

Xavier Roberts is the manufacturer/owner of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls industry. Back in the late ’70s he created a soft sculpture doll, which he sold at art fairs, under the name of his business, “Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc.”. He called his dolls, ‘Little People’. It was very similar to the now well known Cabbage Patch Dolls, which got the attention of a person named Martha Nelson Thomas. They claimed Mr. Roberts had stolen their original creation, and sued him.Ultimately, the case was settled out of court. The rest is, as they say, history.

Xavier Roberts went on to manufacture the Cabbage Patch Dolls, and by 1984 they had become a big hit in the doll markets, and a wide-spread fad. You may have one or more of the dolls. I know my daughters had a couple, and now my grand-daughter has one, too. One way to tell if the doll is an original, is by the authenticity signature of Xavier Roberts on the behind of every doll. 🙂

Now, I couldn’t find any good songs from the 60s and 70s that started with the letter X, but here’s one, by the Beatles, that has an X in the words of the title. 🙂

Today’s post is all about the Letter D. First up, we have… IMG_2341

D … is for DONOVAN

Donovan Leitch is a singer, songwriter who is still recording and performing today. His signature sound has been along the lines of folk, psychedelic rock, and pop, and on April 14, 2012 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His career has spanned the years of 1964 to present. A few of his better known songs include, “Mellow Yellow”, “Sunshine Superman”, Epistle to Dippy”, and “The Hurdy Gurdy Man”. “Mellow Yellow” earned a gold record for more than one million sales in the U.S.

Here’s Donovan’s song, “Mellow Yellow”

Next up, we have…

D…is for Dolls

Dolls are always popular, no matter what your age. From sweet baby dolls to play with, to creepy horror dolls that people collect, there are dolls for everyone. Some well-known dolls include the Madame Alexander Dolls, Barbie, Chatty Cathy, Troll Dolls, Russian Nesting Dolls, and even human sized dolls, used in hospitals for training.

I never collected any dolls, but have had lots of them over the years. I somehow have more than I realized here, after I got to looking around. Here’s a picture of them. 🙂

OCTPOWRIMO – POEMS – DAY # 25 – DOLL WORLD

OCTPOWRIMO – POEMS – DAY # 25 – DOLL WORLDIMG_20150928_151453

Today’ prompt says to remember a toy or plaything from our childhood. 🙂

DOLL WORLD

A little girl sits all alone

Her thoughts are running wild

What captivates her interest so…

This introverted child?

A mother, father, son, and daughter

Aunts, and uncles, too

Grandparents, and friends, and pets are there

No more will she be blue.

She’s created a world that’s all her own

She speaks as their creator…

They may be dolls, but to her they’re real…

Her family made of paper.

~vintage-cutout-dolls

I used to cut out and play with paper dolls all the time. I’d get my little safety scissors, and cut carefully around the images of people I’d find in catalogs, magazines, and sewing pattern books. Then, sometimes I’d get to buy a new book of the paper dolls at the dime store. These would be sturdier, made of cardboard, and have a selection of clothes (with those little tabs) to dress them in. Many hours playing with these. 🙂
