Today’s prompt: shortbread, cannon, guru

Today’s prompt: oracle, brunch, volume

***

My little dog, Guru, is so cute. She’s a fluffy little ball of energy, and always has been

She’s a trained circus performer, as am I, and we’ve been together for five years now.

Wait…let me start at the beginning. My family has traveled around the world with Circus Time. Maybe you’ve heard of us, or seen one of our shows under the big top.

Guru’s mom belonged to the fortune teller with the show. He called himself, “Oracle – The One Who Knows All”. When his dog had puppies, I claimed the runt of the litter for my own. No one thought she’d be able to learn tricks or routines, but she did, with my help. She started out just prancing around with the other show dogs, but soon I had her try out for the cannon shot trick. This is where she’d be shot out of a cannon into my waiting arms. The loud volume of the cannon boom didn’t bother her at all…she loved every minute of it.

After our performances, we’d relax in our trailer, eating a small brunch. Guru would have her dog food, and I’d enjoy tea and shortbread cookies. After a short nap, we’d be ready for the evening show. I’d do my trapeze act, then get Guru ready for the cannon. Like I said, she loved it, and knew when it was time. She’d jump into my arms, and off we’d go. Another town, another show.

Bird convention at dawn

Turtles in a restaurant

And then a couple of days ago, I looked out the front door and saw this lady and her little girl trying to lure a dog, by throwing him some treats. Never seen that before. Come to find out later, that this dog sort of lives in the little park by our lake, and someone even put a dog house out there for him. … update..today the dog house wasn’t there, and I didn’t see any dogs, either. Maybe someone took him in to live with them. Hope so!

The lady never did get the dog to come any closer, even after trying for at least half an hour.

Dear Diary – February 1 – 10 , 1961

***

For those who haven’t seen my Dear Diary posts before, a little explanation. This is my actual diary I wrote in for a full year, when I was 10 years old. I wrote every day, sometimes a lot, sometimes a little, sometimes funny, sometimes boring, but it was all recorded. Names of relatives are only first initials with relationship in parentheses. I’ve typed the entries just as I wrote them, misspellings and all, but corrected in parentheses. More posts of Dear Diary can be found by using categories, or search box. Hope you enjoy reading my childhood diary! 🙂

Gingerly – Daily Post – NanoPoblano – Day 9

Gingerly – Daily Post – NanoPoblano – Day 9

It’s approaching that time again

***

Today for NanoPoblano, I’m combining it with the Daily Post prompt word, which is ‘gingerly’.

The first thing I thought of was our Basset Hound, Ginger. She was with us for many years, and such a character she was.

Her mama dog, Maggie, was an AKC registered Basset Hound, and so was Ginger. When she was born, we were right there with mama and babies. Ginger was the first born, and did have a bit of trouble right from the start. She was blue. I don’t know what happened, but we thought she wouldn’t make it, at first. But then my husband gave her mouth-to-mouth resuscitatation (yes, to a puppy), and she began breathing and turning a beautiful pink. She was alive and fine after that.

Out of the whole litter of puppies, Ginger was the only one with her ginger and white coloring. The rest of the puppies were black, brown, & white.

One of Ginger’s claim to notorious fame was she was a master at stealing food. She once leaped up and grabbed a whole hamburger from a friend’s hand. She also once, raised up to the table and ate half a birthday cake sitting there.

Ginger and her mother, Maggie, loved to escape, too. Whenever they did, they’d trot off down the sidewalk, nose to the ground, ears dragging, and wouldn’t pay attention to us hollering to come back. We’d have to chase them down.

One fun memory was that on every Christmas Eve night, we’d take both of them for a late walk around the neighborhood. We had some big sleigh bells that we’d take along, and shake them, as we went along.

Ginger (and Maggie, too) was such a character, and they are missed.

Ginger

STORMY

I named him Stormy, King of the World

My best friend, when I was a girl

I cried and cried when Stormy died

No longer was he by my side

Now, nothing could ever be the same

Never more to call his name

Stormy

WEEKLY WEATHER – SPRING

Weekly Weather: Spring

***

This week’s topic is spring.

In these photos, we have some tulips that I’d planted a long time ago. There is our dog, Bud, who has since passed on. Also, we have Paolo, our cat. At the moment he is sitting here in front of me on my desk. Last is the cowboy boot with flowers. This was at an annual luncheon, held here every March. It was named the “Mayor’s Beans and Cornbread Lunch”, and was sponsored by the local Hospice organization. Ticket sales and donations all went to Hospice to benefit those who needed this very worthy service. I went every year with my dad, and it was lots of fun. The food was good (beans, cornbread, smoked sausages, and either cake or cobbler). The mayors of all the towns/cities in the area attended. We got to meet them. Local celebrities like TV newscaster personalities, and the mayors did all the serving of the meal to the public. Another fun portion was a live band playing music up on the stage, during the whole time of the luncheon. There were door prizes, too, but we never did win anything. A silent auction was held, also. The boot with flowers and balloons (not pictured) were table decorations. This always reminds me of Spring! 🙂
