DEAR DIARY – DECEMBER 29, 1961 – JANUARY 13, 1961

GE DIGITAL CAMERA

That date looks funny, but I didn’t begin posting these diary entries on Jan. 1st, so to continue in sequence, this is how it is.

Time for another edition of “Dear Diary” 🙂 Enjoy!

~

1/6/61 – I went to school and when I got home after awhile we went bowling. I baked my first cake and hade (had) a tea party with P (sister) … (note…it was a real cake from a recipe and turned out very good. Also, possibly prophetic? One of my daughters birthday is January 6th, so for years, until she was grown, and moved away, I made a cake for her every January 6th 🙂

1/7/61 – I made cup cakes, and I didn’t have to go to school. and I played all day and hade (had) fun.

1/8/61 – I played with P (sister) and H and B (uncle and aunt) came over and visted (visited) awhile.

1/9/61 – I went to school and had fun. At school we could not get a drink because the sep. Tank was full. (septic tank? What on earth??? So, we couldn’t even get a drink of water at school that day? or even flush the toilets? Why didn’t they just let everybody go home?…oh, guess we had fun anyway…hahaha)

1/10/61 – I went to school and had fun. I went to the Dime store and got a new note book. It is blue with girls. They had pink sweters. (sweaters) … (hahaha still love new notebooks with cute covers 🙂

1/11/61 – I went to school. after that I went over to gram-mas and played with KC (a little girl she baby-sat for) I lerend (learned) to turn flips on the wall. and got a nickel. Mother had said I could have when I learend (learned) to turn a flip on the wall.

1/12/61 – I went to school. after I got home I played over J’s (friend). after I came home I cooked supper for us. Then after a while daddy popped some pop corn.

1/13/61 – I went to school. After I went to school I came over to B’s (aunt). I went to the bowling ally (alley) and I got to bowl. I made 73. after we went home we went over to N’s and B’s (aunt and uncle) house and stayed until 10:30. we got there about 8:00.
We played with their dog. They have not named it yet, but they call it Sally. Mother and Daddy had some coffee. After that we went home and took a bath and went to bed.

That’s all for this time. Stay tuned for more later on!

You may wonder how everyone in the family kept coming over to our house, and we kept going over to their houses so much. Well, it’s like this…where we lived was a bit outside of the main city, in it’s own little addition. We all lived within a couple of blocks of each other. My family, my grandparents, two sets of aunts and uncles, cousins. We could all walk over. Us kids rode our bikes all over the place out there, visiting family and friends. We walked to school, too. It was a great place to grow up!

*** Pretty much every summer, we’d all go to pick black-eyed peas on a local farm. Sometimes my aunt and uncle would grow some peas on their acreage, too, and we’d pick some of those. Then the fun would start…shelling them all…and there were a bunch of them. It was fun, though to get a big glass of iced-tea, and sit around the kitchen table with family, shelling, and talking of whatever came to mind. Occasionally a pea would go flying off into the floor, and at the end, they’d have to be swept up. Then mama would get busy with her canning. With the pressure cooker going, and the jars awaiting the peas, we knew, come winter, we’d have some good eating to look forward to. 🙂

Dear Diary,

We ate outside.

***

I played.

We ate outside.

~

Well, looks like I wrote the same thing both days. I’m sure we had fun playing, but I wish I’d written what it was. And, I don’t remember eating outside, but guess we did. I do remember one thing we ate while we were at one of my aunt’s houses (there were two sets of aunts, uncles, and cousins living in Boise, Idaho). What we were served for breakfast was a cantelope melon. Now, I’d had this before, but not like this time. My aunt just cut several of them in half, giving each person their own half to scoop out the melon pieces, and they did not peel it. Before, I’d always had them peeled and cut into slices. Also, I think this was the first time I’d had one for the breakfast meal. We’d only had them as a dessert after supper. So, this was an entirely new experience, for me…and I loved it!

I did try to look at my old VHS family movie films…but for some reason the VCR wouldn’t work. I was going to take a screen shot of something to add on here, but… maybe I can figure out how to play it later on.

DEAR DIARY … JULY 5, 1961

GE DIGITAL CAMERA

Dear Diary,

I played.

We rode some horses.

***

Well, let’s see. My aunt & uncle raised Appaloosa horses. All I know, was I was in horsey heaven, being that I loved anything to do with horses. Me and my cousins got to ride them, too. There was one little foal…so cute…and it’s name was Taffy. I can’t really remember what we would have played…just kid games, I suppose. My cousins living there were an older boy, a girl a bit younger, but still older than me, and a younger boy, about my age. I was in awe of the girl, J. She used to send me all her outgrown/unwanted clothes…and to me they were glamorous…haha, as only a teenager’s clothes could be back in 1961. Anyway, she and I hung out together, buying candy, which we hid away until night time. She pulled her mattress out onto the balcony from her bedroom, and we slept outside under the stars (of course our parents had no idea) 😉 Lots of fun, like a slumber party!
