Dear Diary,

6/1/61 – I played. It was mother’s birthday. We went to town. I got her  box of powder, and a vace (vase) of flowers. P (sister) got her a bottle of perfume. N (aunt) got her a perfume bottle. J & D (cousins) got her some flowers. I spent the night over J’s.

6/2/61 – I played all day. J (cousin) and I played in the water. Then we went to the driving Range (at the golf course). B (aunt) went with us.

6/3/61 – We played. We went to get Dusty (our dog) and Toro (grand-ma’s dog) vaxanatied (vaccinated). then we went to Grannys, T (uncle was over. Granny went home with him. We went to the dime store. We got a 101 Dalmation set.  (I think this was one of those plastic Colorforms boxes)

6/4/61 – I played. We went to Grand mas. Then we went to B’s. (aunt). Daddy and H (uncle) went glofing (golfing) at night. Grand pa came over and ate supper with us.

Dear Diary,

5/1/61 – I went to school. It rained all day. When I came home I painted. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

5/2/61 – I went to school. After school P (sister) walked home with me for the first time. When we got home we played. Then we went to bed.

5/3/61 – I went to school. When I came home J (cousin) came home with me. We played. Then we went to Grandma’s. P (sister) rode the bike. When we went home I played with P. Then I came in. Then I went to bed.

#for some reason the next 3 entries my mom was writing them for me. I don’t know why … it was in her handwriting

5/4/61 – I went to school

5/5/61 – I went to school

5/6/61 – Daddy played golf today I helped mother clean the house. B (aunt) and kids (cousins) came over. We went went to the show tonight. Saw “North to Alaska” and “Edge of Eternity”. Came home, and the house was full of millers (millers were what we called moths – sometimes we called them candle bugs)

5/7/61 – We went to church. It had a sand storm. Daddy plumbed for our washing machine. We went to the grocery store. Then we went to N’s (aunt) and then to B’s (aunt)

5/8/61 – I went to school. I went to see Dr. Jenkins. I have exzema on my head. Went to school this eveing (evening).  Mother had her ears washed out. (what?? haha)

5/9/61 – I went to school. J (cousin) came home with me to play.

5/10/61 – I went to school.

5/11/61 – I went to school. It is D’s (cousin) birthday. He got 4 dollars and a half, a bilfold (billfold), Thongs (flip flops), bicycle. We played outside for a long time.

5/12/61 – I went to school. After school I went to B’s (aunt). D, J, (cousins), and I played baseball all day. Then we ate popcorn. I spent the night.

Dear Diary,

3/23/61 – I went to school. We made clay. When I came home V (cousin) was over. We went to the dime store. When I got home I mad (e) some clay. Then I played. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

3/24/61 – I went to school. Some mothers came to visit. When I went home I played. Then I painted. Then I watched tv. then I went to bed.

3/25/61 – I did not go to school. We was going to the library. J (cousin) came over. She went to thelibrary with us. When I got home J came over. We went to her house. It was V’s (cousin) birthday. She got two dollars, dresses, whistle, umbrella, sun glasses, make up, lepard (leopard). Then we went home and went to bed.

3/26/61 – I did not go to school. I played outside. Granny came over. She stayed to eat dinner. When we took her home we looked in her garage. I found books. I got some funny books, and what-nots. When we came home we got a bunch of books. When I got home I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

3/27/61 – I went to school. I painted a tree. I got paint all over my dress. I had a headack (headache). When I got home I went over to grand mas house. She came over and I went with her. I played all day. When I came home I got my lessons. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

3/28/61 – I went to school. I painted a picture. When I got home I played. Then I got my byc bicycle tire pumped up. Then I rode it. A cold front came. I went in the house. I played. Then I went to bed.

3/29/61 – I went to school. I made a picture of a chicken. When I went home I played. Grand ma came over. She gave me a package. It was clothes. Ther (e) were sweaters, skirts, blouses, dresses, shorts, and a bathing suit. I put them on. Then I played. Then I went to bed.

3/30/61 – I went to school. I played. After lunch a little while we had ice-cream. When I wnt home I played. Then I read. I went in the bed with mother. Then I went to bed. It was the last day of school. It is Easter holidays.

3/31/61 – I did not go to school. I played. Then I went over to J’s (cousin) house. They were molding. They were molding horses, lambs, fish, fruit, and roosters. When I went home I played. Then I watched tv. Then I went to bed.

4/1/61 – I was April fools day. I did not go to school. I played all day. B (aunt) came over. N (aunt) and V (cousin) did to. P (sister) and I colored Easter Eggs. When they went home we played. Then I went over to N’s (aunt). When I went home I went to bed.

Dear Diary,

9/1/61 – I plalyed (played). I went to register for school. J (cousin) came over

 9/2/61 – I played. J (cousin) came over to spend the night.

 9/3/61 – I played. I colored. I had a headace (headache).

9/4/61 – I played. We went to N’s (aunt)

9/5/61 – I went to school. It was the first day. My teacher was Miss Herman. P (sister) went to school. Her teacher was Mrs. Price.

9/6/61 – I went to school. We are learning to jump rope a different way.

9/7/61 – I went to school. I jumped rope with two ropes. I came home and played.

9/8/61 – I went to school. J (cousin) came over. We had a coke.

9/9/61 – I played. We paid bills. I (it) was H’s (uncle) birthday. On tv. We watched Miss Americia (America)

9/10/61 – I played. Grandpa came over.

9/11/61 – I went to school. We have a new …bows? bout? ( I have no idea what this word I wrote was. Here’s the page.) I played. I went to the Dr.

Dear Diary,

8/5/61 -I played with L and J (neighbor girl & cousin). We went to the show.

8/6/61 – N (aunt) came over. We went to Gibson (Gibson’s Discount Store). I got some shoes. I played. Daddy went to Grannys.

8/7/61 – I played. We went to town. We went to Bs (aunt) shower (baby). She got some booties 2 pair, shirts, an infanseat (infant seat), blankets, rattlers 2, nite gown, Kimona, dress, socks, pannies (panties).

8/8/61 – D (cousin) came over to see if I could by (buy) some Kool aid. J (cousin) and I rode bikes. We went to the store. We went riding to peoples houses we knew.

8/9/61 – We went to the store. J (cousin) and I went riding. We went to the store. J and the family came over. We played

8/10/61 – J and I went riding. We went to the library.

8/11/61 – I kept K (a friend’s little girl that I babysat). I got a quarter. We went to the show. We saw Voge (Voyage) to the Bottom of the sea!!? I played. I had a headack. (headache) Daddy made some popcorn.

8/12/61 – I played. N (aunt) came over. She gave us some puppets. We went to town. We went to Grannys.

8/13/61 – I played. N came over. We had watermelon.

8/14/61 – We went to town. I got 2 dresses, a slip, and socks. I played.

8/15/61 – I went to play with J (cousin). We went swimming in their pool. We made some popcorn. P (sister) went to stay with granny. She is going to spend the night.

8/16/61 – I went to the store. B (aunt) had a baby. J (cousin) and V (cousin) spent the night.

Dear Diary,

7/24/61 – I went too (to) town with B (aunt). I went too (to) the library. I played. We showed flim (film – home movie film) to B, H, and V. (aunt, uncle, cousin)

7/25/61 – I went to Dr. Harvy. (foot doctor)  I played. V (cousin) came over.

7/26/61 – I went to Granny’s. I went to the store. Igot a coloring book. I skated. I fell down. Mama came over to Granny’s. It was Grand dads birthday. Daddy gave him a few dollars. I spent the night. P (sister) got a shot.

7/27/61 – I played. Mr & Mrs. L (friends?) came over. We went with them to Monteray (Monterrey – a shopping center). I got some clay and two Dogs. (I collected glass figurines)

7/28/61 – I went to Dr. Harvey. I got some new pads (arch supports). When I got home V (cousin) came over. I went home with B (aunt). I played.

7/29/61 – I went to the library. Grand-ma came over. I went to B’s (aunt). J (cousin) & D (cousin) came home.

7/30/61 – I played. H (uncle came over).

7/31/61 – I played N and B (aunt and uncle) came to Granny’s. We played golf. We mad (made) ice-cream. We went to the library.

8/1/61 – It was mama’s & Daddy’s aniverssry (anniversary). J (cousin) and I played.

8/2/61 – I went to the store. We got a fishbole (fish bowl). I played. L (neighbor girl) came over. D (cousin) came over. Daddy went to the hostpitle (hospital). something was in his eye.

8/3/61 – We went to the Dee (?) Daddy had the ball of th eye cut. He had a patch on it. I went to play with J (cousin). I swam in their pool.

8/4/61 – I played. L (neighbor girl) came over to spend the night. We showed film. (home movies)

Dear Diary,

7/1/61 – We went thru some towns. At Dumas (TX) B’s (uncle) car broke down. He went to get another car.

7/2/61 – We went through some towns.

7/3/61 – We went through some towns.

7/4/61 – We went through some towns. We came to M’s (aunt in Idaho). We ate outside.

7/5/61 – I played. We rode some horses.

7/6/61 – I played. We ate outside.

7/7/61 – I played. We ate outside.

7/8/61 – I played. Daddy went fishing.

7/9/61 – I played. Daddy came home

7/10/61 – I played. I went to J’s (another aunt in Idaho). I played with J (boy cousin). We left for home.

7/11/61/ – We went through some towns.

7/12/61 – We came home. I went to bed.

I guess I was so busy traveling and playing I didn’t have time to write much.

Here’s what I remember, though.

About 100 miles from home my uncle’s car broke down on our big trip to Idaho to visit family. There was a big discussion among the adults of whether to cancel the whole trip, or not. He decided to drive back home to get another car. Don’t know how that was managed with a broke down car. Maybe two of the men went to do this exchange, then drive all the way back. I do know my mom, sister, aunt, and others all stayed in the little town overnight, in a motel, while the men did their car business. I thought that was the most fun thing ever, staying in a motel. I’d never stayed in one before. Much later down the years, my mom said it was the most awful motel ever. haha But, to a kid, it was exciting.

We traveled from TX to Idaho, going through Colorado, and Utah. We stopped at the Royal Gorge in CO, for some sightseeing. We also stopped in Salt Lake City, Utah, to see the Mormon Temple, and a museum (where I saw actual mummies!)

At my aunt’s home in Idaho, we did get to ride horses. They raised Appaloosa horses. I remember one little colt named Taffy. We did eat outside a lot, my cousins and I played a lot.

I think we took a different route back home, because I remember seeing Pike’s Peak in the distance, and we were at the 4 corners states, and seeing Ship Rock in New Mexico. As soon as we got back to Texas, we started singing all the songs we could think of about Texas. We had a fun trip, but it was good to get back home. 🙂

Dear Diary,

6/18/61 – I played. It was Father’s Day. Daddy got a bilfold (billfold). We went to Gramp-pa’s. D (cousin) was there. We went to Grannys and N’s (aunt). They were not home. then we went home. I had a headaeck (headache).

6/19/61 – I played. I held a baby chawawa (chihuahua puppy). Went over to N’s (aunt). We talked about our trip. then we went home.

6/20/61 – I played. Daddy got his Polio shot. We went to Grandmas. P (sister) stayed at night Grandma, and Grandpa came over.

6/21/61 -I played. L (neighbor girl) came over. We went to the store. L came over. When daddy came home we went swimming. It was the first day of summer.

6/22/61 – We went to town. Then I played. When Daddy came home we went to sears. (Sears department store)

6/23/61 – I played. At night went to the show. (movie) We went to see the, 101 Dalmations. ..** I remember I was so excited to go see this movie. We saw it at a drive-in movie theater.

6/24/61 – I played after dinner. Grand-ma came over. P (sister) and I went home with her. I sewed a long time. (probably embroidery – my grandma taught me how to do this) … At night N (aunt and B (uncle), Grand-ma and pa came over. N had some fimm. (home movie film to show)

6/25/61 – I played. Granny came over N (aunt) came over for a minute.

6/26/61 – I went to town. We got some P j’s (pajamas). I got some shorts. B (aunt) came over.

6/27/61 – I went to town. I got two pair of pants and a blouse. We went to the store. Then I went to Grand mas. I stayed until almost 7.

6/28/61 – I played. We went to the story store. J (cousin) came over. Daddy went to Grannys and built a pen for Dusty. (our dog) …(they were going to keep our dog while we went on an out of town trip, and didn’t have a fence.)

6/29/61 – I played. D (cousin) came over. We went to the dime store. We went to Grand-mas. B (aunt) and N (aunt) were there.

6/30/61 – I played. At night everyone came over. I pooled (pulled) a tooth. we left for our trip to Idaho.
