Flower of the Day – Red & Green

A very tiny poinsettia, and a Mrs. Santa ornament. Also a vintage Christmas card that has a white vase with green holly branches and white flowers in it.

Christmas Memory # 14 – MMMBop & Snow

Christmas Memory # 14 – MMMBop & Snow Click to view

For the days up until Christmas I’ll be sharing some short memories of Christmases past that I remember.

This may be weird, but even on Christmas morning we sometimes listened to music, but not Christmas music. It was usually rock songs, of whatever music album, cassette, or CD that one of us had gotten as a present that year.

On this day, my daughter had gotten the Hanson CD with the song MMMBop as one of the songs. We all like this song, so we put it on while we were opening presents. We put it on repeat, so it played over and over while we were rocking out and singing along. We call this our MMMBop Christmas because of that.

It was pretty cool too, that just as we started with all this, it started snowing heavily. Now that in itself was wonderful and exciting. The snow kept coming all morning with huge saucer shaped flakes, filling up the yards and streets. By the time we had to drive over to my Dad’s house for lunch and the family get together, we could barely see the roads, but we made it.

Definitely not a typical kind of Christmas day, but very memorable.

Christmas Memory # 5 – Odd Gifts

Have you ever gotten a sort of strange gift from someone for your Christmas present? I’ve had a few like that.

Once, when I was a kid, I was expecting some kind of toy I guess, but what I got was a set of suitcases. They were a set of three – large, medium, and a smaller one for maybe make-up things. They were made of hard plastic (?) material, and blue.

If I’d been older, and did a lot of traveling I might have appreciated them then, but it would be a long time until I ever traveled anywhere. I did use them though, at that much later time.

I don’t know if women still use portable hair dryers on their curler rolled hair or not, but I did many years ago. This was actually a pretty good gift at the time, but still was odd. It was a large egg-shaped portable hair dryer that had a fold out neck with a hood you sit under. It was supposed to be like being at the beauty salon using their hair dryers.

Now, these were pretty odd, I think. I got electric saws. Yes, the kind you cut wood with. I’d at some point mentioned I liked the big plywood cut out shapes for Christmas that people put out in the yard for decoration. It would be fun to make some and paint them. That’s all. So what did I get? A hand held kind of jig-saw that I had no idea how to use. We didn’t have any wood to cut, either.

Then the next year, I got another one. Only this one was a big jig-saw that you had to bolt onto a work table. Still didn’t know how to use one, or even wanted to by then. We did check prices on plywood – pretty expensive, so didn’t get any. The mister tried using the saw on some small wood pieces, and that didn’t work very well. So, here we are with two saws nobody uses. Here’s the one on the work table – it’s still there after many years.

~

Anyway, I’m sure there have been other odd gifts I’ve gotten over the years. How about you?

You know if you have pets, like a cat or a dog, and it’s time for Christmas trees and presents, well there will be mishaps.

This one is when we had only dogs – a couple of Basset Hounds, a part Lab, and a part Lab/Basset. They always loved getting into things, and especially at Christmas time.

My daughters had gotten one of those Advent calendars each, and behind each little numbered door was a piece of chocolate candy. I think they’d opened one or two, but then the dogs got into the treats, tearing into the cardboard calendars and eating all the candy. They felt no ill effects from eating the chocolate – and I did kind of worry about that – but they were fine. The dogs showed no remorse whatsoever.

My girls, though, were very upset. That was the first time they’d had one of these calendars, and I can’t remember if they ever got another one after this disaster. 🙂

Here’s the culprit’s pictures from better days: (sadly, they’ve all passed on now)

Flower of the Day – Christmas in July

Do you have an extra Christmas celebration…in July?

I’ve always heard of it, but we never did anything for it, though lots of people around the world do.

Maybe families couldn’t get together in December, so have a fun party in July. Maybe we are wishing for some cooler weather, like we had in the winter months. Anyway, sounds fun!

So, here’s a pretty poinsettia for you in the month of July!
