For the days up until Christmas Iโ€™ll be sharing some short memories of Christmases past that I remember.

I’ll call this one Whirlwind Eve. That’s because it was Christmas Eve, and I was in a whirlwind of activity.

When you’re still just kind of starting out, trying to make everything festive at Christmas is sometimes not all that easy. We didn’t have much money back then, but still wanted to get gifts for everyone in the family, and some for our friends.

The mister only got paid at his job on Christmas Eve, so after he came home, we’d have to go do all our shopping then. It was always a race to get it all done before the stores closed for the evening. There weren’t any 24 hours open stores back then. They might have stayed open until six or eight o’clock; I’m not sure.

Let’s see – back then everyone bought everyone in the family something, and also for any friends. I’m pretty sure there were 20 in all. We had to budget only $100 for it all, including wrapping paper and things like tape and tags and bows. Our gifts had to be $5 or less. All had to be done within an hour or so.

๐ŸŽ

Then we had to go home, wrap it all up, and get ready to go to our friend’s family gathering, of which we were always a part of. It was fun, though, and we’d make it in time. We wouldn’t get back home until midnight or later, then get up early on Christmas morning to go to my family’s houses (Mom’s for gifts and Grandma’s for lunch and more gifts)

๐ŸŽ

These kind of whirlwind Christmas Eve & Christmas mornings were the usual, even up to when we had our own girls. But then we moved far away, and we’d have our own little celebrations for the holidays with the four of us. It was quite a bit different, but wonderful anyway. We did miss the earlier kind of days, and now remember them fondly.

How late do I leave my Christmas shopping? It depends on several things, and each year is different. I always say I’m going to do the shopping early, but how early is that? One year I started in January, with the thought of doing a little each month. That didn’t last more than that one month. Most times we try to get going toward the end of November, or by December 1st, at least.

One year, a long time ago, we didn’t get a paycheck until Christmas Eve evening! So, that’s when we began our shopping expedition. It also started to snow, which was kind of exciting, and also a bit rare for us. There was one store that was still open that evening, so we traipsed off to find gifts for everybody, and we had a long list. Also included was all the wrapping papers, tape, tags, bows, that we’d need. We had no idea what to get for a gift for anyone, either.

The thing is, we had to hurry on two accounts. One was the store would be closing really soon, and the other was we were to be attending a Christmas Eve night party with friends, which included gift giving. Finally we got home, and frantically wrapped up every single gift. We finished the ones we had to take over to our friends house, and also the ones for the next morning at our relatives Christmas morning celebration.

Whew! We barely made it! ๐Ÿ™‚
