REASSURANCE

You lived your life as one free

To be as you wanted to be

Now in death, your remains behind bars,

Yet your soul is up with the stars

Please don’t fret…don’t regret

Your mark we’ll never forget

WRITING 101 – A MAP AS YOUR MUSE

WRITING 101 – A MAP AS YOUR MUSEcropped-seal_v2-03

For day #18 of Writing 101, we were to use a map to tell a story, in whatever way we chose. I thought of all the kinds of maps there were, like road maps, city maps, country maps, weather maps, and many, many more. Then I thought of all the songs I’ve heard of that mention traveling down a highway, or charting your way through life, and there were so many of these I couldn’t choose. I even spent some time listening to a lot of these, which was nice. Then I tried to find an actual paper map. I know we have some, somewhere in this house, but I couldn’t find any at all. I have no idea where we put them, and it’s been so long since we had to use one. I did the google map/street view for awhile. That’s always fun, but I still didn’t know what to write about.

I finally tried to think of some other kind of map, that might not be so obvious. I wanted something different to write about. Then I remembered…we’d gotten a map of the city cemetery, not long ago. I found it, and took a picture of it. Why we had this, was that we went to the cemetery to just look around. I love going to see all the headstones, taking pictures (hoping to get something strange, like an orb or a ghost?). Yes, that would be me, doing that.

This local cemetery is the oldest here in town, and is very large. It is very well maintained, with beautiful grounds, and all kinds of interesting headstones are allowed, along with a few mausoleums, and beautiful statues. It is also a bit of a tourist attraction, being that the rock and roll singer, Buddy Holly, is buried here. It is also said to be very haunted. I’ve never been there at night, though I would like to.

While we were there, we wanted to also look up some of our relatives gravesites there. We didn’t remember where exactly one was located. We walked all over where we thought it was, but couldn’t find it. The others, I’d never seen them before, but knew they were out here somewhere.

So, we stopped by the caretaker’s building to ask. She was very helpful. We gave her the names, and she looked them up on her computer, and printed us out the map of the graveyard. It had each section named, each small roadway marked, and each plot numbered and catalogued. She explained how to get to them, as we looked at the map.

So, off we went down the little named lanes, looking for the ones she’d marked off for us. Now it was easy to find them. We paid our respects to our relatives, then I took pictures. I don’t think I captured anything strange this day, though.

Here’s a picture of the graveyard map, and one of the famous Umlauf Angel statue. It is said that tears have been seen falling from the angel’s eyes on occasion.
