Calavera is the representation of a human skull, and is usually made from sugar. It is decorated and used in the Mexican celebration of Dia de los Muertos, also called Day of the Dead. It’s to honor and remember those people who have passed away.

I think this is a really great holiday, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. For a few years my daughter and I would attend the festivities held here in town. The University (Texas Tech) would hold a progressive art trail exhibit from one location to another. There we could see many forms of art displays of ofendas (small altars), paintings, mixed media projects and sculptures.

They would have decorations, a Mariachi  band playing music, and traditional refreshments of ‘dead bread’, tamales, chips & salsa, and hot chocolate.

Then we’d go to the next art place, which was held at the Buddy Holly Center & Museum, where many more art works were on display, more food and another band would play.

It’s been quite awhile since we’ve gone to these, but they sure were fun.

Thanks for visiting! Peace ☮️
