Welcome to the 2018 edition of the A to Z Blogging Challenge!

All through the month of April, the challenge asks us to blog every day (except Sundays), and to go through the alphabet A to Z, connecting our posts to the letter of each day.

My idea for this time, my 5th to participate, is to showcase a book or two each day, and provide a tiny bit of information about them. These will not be a full book review, but just saying what it is about, and if I liked the book or not.

These books are mostly books that I already have on my shelves, and have read, or are on my to be read stacks. There will be a very few of them that I don’t already own, or have read.

I will also post a quote each day that has something to say about books, or reading.

Hope you enjoy, and maybe see a book or a few that you might want to read, too.

“Just Another Kid”, by Torey L. Hayden, is just one of the author’s many books. I’ve read them all many times, and can say she is one of my favorite authors.

Her career is in childhood education, more specifically, she teaches special needs children. She writes of the specific children (names changed, of course), and everything that happens in her classes. There are many tears, lots of laughter, and more than that, there is learning, and love.

This book concerns her dealings with one of the children’s mothers. That the mother signs on as a classroom volunteer/aide, is a great help to Ms Hayden. However, she is to find out the mother has many problems of her own. Ms Hayden helps her work through her difficulties, just as she does with the children. So, in a way, she is ‘just another kid’.

If you’ve never read one of Torey L. Hayden’s books, I would highly recommend them.

“Jeneration X”, by Jen Lancaster, is another of the author’s many memoirs. She uses humor to tell all, about her life.

In this one, she is trying to live the ‘adulting’ kind of life she supposes she should begin. But, it’s hard to break out of her Gen X mindset. We follow along as she navigates adulthood, with her husband, and menagerie of pets.

I’ve read all of this author’s books, and each one is so fun to read.

JINX CAR

Standard

Before being on Word Press I was posting over on the Blogger site. Sometimes, I like to transfer some posts from there to here, because honestly, almost no one ever saw/read them over there. This is one of those. I wrote it for the A to Z Blog Challenge – Letter J, on April 11, 2014. 🙂

JINX CAR

Thank you for visiting! Comments welcome! Happy reading!

JINX CAR

We owned a jinx car. Yes, we did. It was a pre-owned ’66 or ’67 Chevrolet Caprice. A big, old, boat of a car, with plush overstuffed seats, electric windows, and temperature controlled air conditioning. I despised that car.

The day we test drove it, it shimmied all over the highway. I think the wheels needed alignment, or something. We bought it, anyway.

First of all, I didn’t even want a different car. We traded in our ’65 Mustang (which I loved), for this monstrosity. Strike one…Strike two…the wheel thing…and well, the strikes kept coming. One thing or another was always wrong with it. You name it, it needed repairs.

When I first drove it up to where I worked at the time, everyone wanted to see our new car. So, out to the parking lot we all went. One girl was not impressed. She took me aside to tell me…this car is a jinx. Seems this very car had just been traded in by her grandparents, and they’d had nothing but trouble from it. I guess back then there were no ‘lemon’ laws or disclosure rules.

Anyway, the jinx car lived up to it’s reputation. We had it for awhile, costing us more in repairs than it was worth. Then, after coming home from overseas, I got that car out of storage. I got rid of it…traded it in…yes, I did. I was surprised the car lot people even gave me a dime for it.

I immediately bought another car that I loved…a ’69 Camaro. Now, that was a car. I looked much better driving a cool Camaro around town, in my twenties, instead of the old jinx car, for sure. And I don’t remember the new one giving us a bit of trouble!

Thank you for reading! Hope you enjoyed hearing about the jinx car!

A to Z BLOG CHALLENGE – LETTER J 4bd62ad9-ea74-4273-967b-7c426c911c61 IMG_2349

Today’s letter to write something about is J.

~

Letter J is for…Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin, an American singer/songwriter, was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 19, 1943. She died on October 4, 1970. During the mid 60s, she performed her unique style of singing the blues, and rock, with the band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. To the public, she was often called the Queen of Psychedelic Soul, but to her friends, she was Pearl. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.  A couple of her well-known songs were “Piece of My Heart”, and “Me and Bobby McGee”.

Letter J is for…Journals/Journaling

Chances are, if you like to write, you’ve bought a journal, or even lots of journals over the years. I know I have. It’s hard to resist a new book of blank pages, just waiting for me to fill in with my thoughts, doodling, and miscellaneous notes and reminders. Pretty much anything can become a journal. A regular spiral notebook or composition book works just fine. If you want to, you can get really pretty and fancy books, too, as there are as many types as there are people who keep a journal. You can call them diaries, day planners, travel logs, or anything you feel suits your mood. Have fun with your own personal journal. Here’s a photo of just some of mine. 🙂
