Scenes of Favorite Days # 4 – Ice Tree

***

Is it just me, or is this a very slow Monday?

The only thing interesting thing going on is we’re kind of waiting around for the snow to start later on today, and all day tomorrow. We do have a stew simmering on the stove for supper, though.

Anyway, here’s one more of my favorite days from quite a few years ago. Could be another like it this time around, too.

Ice tree and lightning – One winter, late in the night it was very cold and snowing. The dogs wanted to go out, which was normal for them every night about this time. No one else was up, just me and the dogs. I let them outside in the back yard, and made myself a cup of coffee.

As was my habit, too, I got my writing notebook and started writing. It’s a favorite time of mine to write – waiting for the dogs in the middle of the night. It was very dark out, the ground was covered in snow, and the tree was coated with so much ice on the branches, that it was bent over, sort of making a tunnel as they reached the ground. My dogs came walking through the tunnel of ice and snow.

The thing that made this night so beautiful though, was it was thundering and lightning like crazy. Every flash of the lightning made the ice and snow look like silver in the dark of night. Just so pretty to see that.

The photo shows our dog Weasel (RIP), walking under the ice tree tunnel the next morning. Still a pretty sight.

Fall Foilage Photos:

  1.  Our front yard tree with fallen leaves (mostly still green/brown/dried/frozen) and a weathered wooded bench underneath
  2.  A large evergreen tree showing it’s many, tiny blue berry/seeds (at my aunt’s house)
  3. Orange, yellow, and green trees seen today by a business.

We visited the Kansas City Missouri Zoo last summer. It was wonderful to see all the animals in their habitats.

I love giraffes, and there were a lot of them wandering among the tall trees, and also nibbling on the bark.

There was a little gift shop there too, called the Tree Tops, with a giraffe motif.

These are some trees I saw while we were driving around today. Not too bad for taking the photo as we were moving on down the road.

  • Two large trees in a roadside park. In between is a fountain spraying into the little lake.
  • A medium sized tree in a business landscaping area. In the foreground is some yellow/dried bear grass.
  • Another medium sized tree by the road.
  • A couple of trees by the lake by our house (you can see a bit of the blue water)

A couple of days late, but here’s my entry for the Sunday Trees challenge. 🙂

***

These are the trees I see every day right around our house.

The first one is our front yard tree in the beginning of fall. The leaves have already started to turn yellow and fall to the ground. You can also see part of our sidewalk, and a weathered wood bench. One of our neighbors built the bench for us.

The next photos I took yesterday afternoon during a rain and hail storm. Lots of thunder, and rain, and the hail  was very loud, but not very big…about pea to marble sized.

There is the tree directly next door. You can see the mailbox in this one.

Then the big tree directly across the street from us. You can see part of their house.

Last tree is across from us, too.

Lots of green leaves, and we have had plenty of rain this year.

We have some beautiful sunsets here. These dark tree branches were silhouetted against the fiery orange and delicate pink sunsets.

Sunday Trees – Gnarly Bark in the Park

Sunday Trees – Gnarly Bark in the Park

Here are some photos of trees in a park here, showing their gnarly bark.

First one is looking upward into the tree branches. I was standing right under, by the trunk. (Browns & greens)

The next one is a close up of the bark. Bark on trees is always interesting in the patterns it makes, and how rough it feels.

Third photo is another tree in a park, Can you find the squirrel? (he’s sitting in shadows as a sillouette way up in the branches – upper left)

Last photo is another park tree. It’s roots and bark are mostly in the water, with green branches hanging over.
