Scenes of Favorite Days # 1

***

Do you have memories of favorite kinds of days? Mine usually involve some type of weather, for some reason.

Here’s the first one:

***

Chilly, super windy day with the sand blowing, turning the sky brown. Usually happens in winter time or early spring time.

I have a pile of new books from the library around me on the bed. I’m covered up with a snuggly home-made quilt.

I have a Charms candy sucker – usually lemon-lime flavor

The bedroom window is open a crack, because I feel claustrophobic if the room is totally enclosed.

The wind is knocking things around outside, and as it whooshes through the open window it makes a mournful whistling sound.

I have my old fashioned, gold-toned goose neck lamp up on the bed’s headboard. It’s turned on, as it is a gloomy kind of day.

Everyone else in the house is quiet, also probably reading.

My choice of book this day is a science fiction novel (I can’t remember the name of it, but it was engrossing)

I am maybe in my early teens.

I still have that lamp as you can see from this photo.

The questions:

Do dogs ‘talk’ (communicate) with their own species?

Sure they do. I know when listening to the dogs in the neighborhood, one will start ‘barking/saying’ something, and others will chime in with their own thoughts about what’s happening. They communicate with us, too. Be still and quiet, open your mind to whatever message you get when you are with your dog (or cat). It’s strange, but true.

Have you ever had to work on Christmas Day?

No, I never had to work on Christmas Day, except here at home.

If someone gifts you something that you immediately loathe, do you pretend to really like it anyway or are you brutally honest about your opinion?

I thank the person for the gift. Why would you want to hurt someone’s feelings by disparaging a gift given with good intentions.

Which popular drink, found during the Christmas season most often, is called “milk punch?”

I’d say it is eggnog because it’s made with milk. I’ve read some others that say there is a difference, though.

How many ghosts show up during “A Christmas Carol?”

I always thought there were three – past/present/future, but some say there were four. I never read that book, but I might have seen the movie long ago.

Are you all about the holly and jolly or more about remembering the alleged ‘true’ meaning of Christmas?

I’d say I’m a little of both. I do like the fun and the decorations and gifts, but also remember why we are celebrating according to some religious traditions.

Please share a memory or thought about the holiday season if you’d like, whatever kind of celebration you may observe.

Since I’ve already wrote quite a few Christmas Memory posts, which you can find elsewhere on here, and since it is past Christmas, I hope your holiday season was and is a good one.

Happy New Year! 🙂

So, we’re supposed to say something about – year. Well, another one is just about gone by. Now we have to remember to write 2020 on everything, which will take me awhile to do. I like the looks of that – 2020 – nice and even.

We don’t usually do anything special for greeting the new year. Most times we’re already asleep by the time midnight rolls around. In past years we’ve done this and that. For a long time we’d get together with good friends to play either cards or dominoes, have some goodies to eat, watch the ball drop on the TV show, then head for home.

One of the most interesting year end New Year’s Eve celebrations I’ve seen was when we were in Germany. They were tons of fireworks going off all over the city. So pretty and so loud. I imagine a few neighbors around here will pop a few fireworks, too, but not nearly as many as 4th of July.

Nothing big planned for this year – or even any time during the year that we know of.

I’ll wish y’all a Happy New Year!

Have You Ever?

Have you ever planned your going out to lunch day around the supermarket samples they give out? We have.

It was the grand opening of a new grocery store here in town, many years ago. My Mom, my Sister, and I decided we wanted to go check it out, since it was supposed to be unique and different from our regular store.

We heard that there would be people giving out samples of their food products in all areas of the store, so we figured why not! We’d go around to all the stations in the store, sampling what they had, and it would be enough for our lunch. And, it was. It was fun to do, and yes we bought quite a few of the items, too.

The store wasn’t all that great, though – just another grocery store, but arranged pretty well.

One thing I remember from that day, besides the food, was that I saw a 7 foot tall lady. I had never ever seen a woman that tall in my life. I’m not sure she was really 7 feet tall, but she towered over everyone. She looked like a very nice lady, and she wasn’t a store gimmick trying to draw in customers by wearing stilts. She was just a regular shopper. 🙂

A Glow in the Night

A Glow in the Night

***

I was writing this poem for a poetry challenge, but it turned out too long for that one. I still wanted to post it though, because it expresses my hope, love, and Peace for all.

***

A Glow in the Night

A glow – a glow

Of Angel wings

Of children’s eyes

For all bright things

A glow about this holy night

A time for silence and delight

I wish you Peace

I wish you Joy

I wish for Love

All girls and boys

I wish you tenderness and toys

A glow in our hearts

Which never departs

For memories bright

May you always hold tight

This glow – a glow

A glow in the night

For those who haven’t seen my Dear Diary posts before, a little explanation. This is my actual diary I wrote in for a full year, when I was 10 years old. I wrote every day, sometimes a lot, sometimes a little, sometimes funny, sometimes boring, but it was all recorded. Names of relatives are only first initials with relationship in parentheses. I’ve typed the entries just as I wrote them, misspellings and all, but corrected in parentheses. More posts of Dear Diary can be found by using categories, or search box. Hope you enjoy reading my childhood diary! 🙂

Grand-ma’s Christmas Kitchen

Standard

Grand-ma’s Christmas Kitchen Click to view

***

Never had a Christmas Day come that we weren’t at Grand-ma’s house for dinner. Along with the boxes of presents and excited, yelling kids, the ladies would bring along lots of holiday food.

Inside the shiny aluminum foil was turkey and dressing smelling of sage and cornbread. Pies had thick, gooey meringue  with tiny drops of golden liquid beading it’s surface You never knew which flavor pie you’d get – creamy chocolate, tangy pineapple, or toasted coconut – until it was cut open, revealing the thick, sweet-smelling pudding inside.

All the children would sneak into the kitchen to see if dinner was ready. The tantalizing smells of the baking turkey, and rows of brown ‘n serve rolls lined up waiting their turn in the oven were just to tempting for us to resist. We hung around underfoot, hoping for a tid-bit to hold us until dinner was ready.

The kitchen walls were painted a light blue, and a large piece of clear plastic was thumb-tacked behind the stove. A door leading to the service porch was always left open on this day to let in a cool breeze.

On the south side of the kitchen, an unusual indoor window was divided into sized cubbyholes. If you looked through it, you would see a bedroom. It was a big day when one of the kids could look through without being held up in someone’s arms. On the shelves in this window sat my Grand-ma’s little glass figurines. We kids always had to examine each and every one. I remember a large, funny coffee cup. It had two separate compartments, each with a flat side. When put together, it would make one large cup. Words printed on it said it was a “Texas sized” cup of coffee, and wouldn’t you rather have half a cup.

As the dinner preparations were coming to an end, my cousins, sister, and I would argue over whose turn it was to sit on the tall wooden stool. It’s rounded seat, painted sky blue, was the favorite perch of every child. We took turns and usually drew straws to see who sat on the favored ‘throne’. When sitting so high, you’d feel like royalty.

Finally, everyone would crowd around the kitchen table and my uncle would say a special prayer. It was always the same one, and gave everyone a good feeling that our family was gathered at Christmas again.

My Grand-pa usually sat at the table with the ladies and kids. With a twinkle in his blue eyes, he’d do his magic tricks for us. These were just simple things, like pulling a quarter magically from a child’s ear, or switching our iced tea glass with his, and doing little puzzles with matchsticks, but to us it was real magic.

As night came on, everyone would pack up some food for taking home. Bidding everyone a good night, the children would be rounded up and a tired but happy family would make their way home on a cold Christmas night.

Golden 50th Wedding Anniversary

Golden 50th Wedding Anniversary

***

Today, December 23, 2019, is our 50th wedding anniversary.

Hard to believe it’s been that long, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

***

Remembrances of my wedding:

  • My chosen color theme was mint green
  • My Mom sewed my wedding dress (I picked the pattern, but made some changes)
  • I only had $100 to spend for the whole thing
  • My favorite flower is the chrysanthemum – I had small white ones for my bouquet
  • I wanted some champagne but wasn’t old enough to buy it, so on the actual wedding day I took my Grandma with me. My car broke down on the way, and we had to walk across a cotton field to find a phone to call for help.
  • We also had punch to drink – lime sherbet and 7UP
  • I made my own candles to use
  • My Uncle took a few Polaroid photos & my Aunt sang a song

These two charms are to commemorate our engagement and wedding. The one with wedding bells is engraved on the back with the date we got married.

***

***

***

This song means a lot to me, because we called it ‘Our Song’, since we met, dated, and got married. In fact, we played the song on a record player as we marched down the aisle together at our wedding. It may have seemed strange for wedding music, but it was 1969, and we did things our way. I guess we did something right, as we’ve been married 50 years. 🙂

~partial lyrics~

You know I love you, I always will
My mind’s made up by the way that I feel
There’s no beginning, there’ll be no end
‘Cause on my love you can depend

***

***

***

I also still have the original 45 rpm record we played at our wedding.

***

My daughter sent us the card on the left, and my husband gave me the card in front, and the beautiful Poinsettia plant today.
