Horse Names – Flashback Friday

Fandango’s Flashback Friday — May 26th

Flashback Friday is so we can share an older post that may not have gotten many views in the past. I figure a post very near the exact date will be okay.

Here’s one I posted on May 25, 2017

1,001 HORSE NAMES – or NOT?

1,001 HORSE NAMES – or NOT?

Here I go with a big mistake…a story I’ve told many times over the years, and now I find I got it all wrong! I found evidence of the mistake just today.

The following story is my ‘presumed/remembered’ way it all happened. I even blogged about it on my other blog, on April 9, 2014. It was another entry for the A to Z Blog Challenge. Here’s what is wrong with this…I always just ‘knew’ I’d written down 1,001 Horse Names. However, looking in my scrapbook today for the actual papers, so I could take a photo, I found out I was wrong. It was only 1,000 names.  I also stated that Candy Spots was the first name. It wasn’t…not even close…it was 437! haha – I was shocked! Not a big deal, but still funny how my memory was off like that.

The photo says I did all these names in the summer of 1962, so I would have been eleven years old. I do remember diligently sticking with it all summer long. It was fun. 🙂

Here is the photo: Plus a couple of other drawings I did back then. Did I say I was obsessed with horses? 🙂

**Oh, wow…just noticed number 417 was Ghost! 🙂

1,001 HORSE NAMES

I’ve always loved horses. One summer, when I was ten years old, I believe, I started a big project. My grand idea was to make a list of 1,001 names of horses. I settled on that number, because the movie “101 Dalmations” was popular at the time, and I figured, why not go bigger than 101…I’d do 1,001!

All that summer, I worked on the list…name, after name, after name. Some names I’d just make up, some were of real race horses. My grandad liked to go to the horse races at Ruidoso Downs, in New Mexico. When he got back, he’d give me the racing form from his trip to the racetrack. I’d study all the particulars about the horses, and pick out the names I liked, to add to my list.

The very first horse name I wrote was “Candy Spots”, which was the name of a real race horse. I’d also draw pictures of horses to go with the list, since I loved to draw.

I actually still have that list, and I did make it all the way to 1,001! That was such a fun summer.

Salt and pepper shakers always go together as partners. I have quite a few I’ve collected, all in the novelty kind, which are usually cute.

Here are a couple of cats (just the faces), one yellow and one blue. They used to belong to my daughter, but she gave them to me.

These partners are funny … a dog relieving himself on a fire hydrant. A friend sent me these.

Throwback Thursday – Pets

This time we’re looking back at the pets we’ve had. Thanks Lauren & Maggie for hosting this fun prompt.

***

We don’t have any pets at the moment. We feed the cats outside that come around, though.

***

I’ve had pets of one kind or another since I was a little kid. Many, many pets. If I was to write about all of them on this one post, it would be pages long.

I’ve had dogs, cats, ducks, rabbits, gerbils, birds, hermit crabs, fish, and even a spider or two that weren’t exactly pets, but they hung around for a long time and I gave them a name.

***

We’ve had lots of cats too, over the years, but I’ve written about them quite a lot on here, so won’t this time.

***

It’s been quite a few years since we had any dogs here with us, but we used to have quite a few. Let me think if I can remember all the dogs I’ve had since I was a kid.

Cindy – King – Skipper – Troubles – Dusty – Stormy – Freckles – Ginger – Maggie – Bud – Bridget – Weasel – Sam

And, in my notebooks I’ve written about them all – their stories.

And, I have photos of every one of them (except Troubles).  Here’s me and Stormy. 🙂

This photo was taken in black & white, in the back yard in 1957. Stormy was just a mixed breed white and fluffy little dog, maybe part Cocker Spaniel? I’m standing on an old weathered door that was on the ground, and wearing a print dress, and my hair was fairly short.

***

A strange incident was a few years later my cousin & I were playing with the Ouija board. I asked would I get a dog?  It said yes. I asked when? It said January. (this was back in the fall). Sure enough, come January, I did get a puppy. I named him Dusty, and he was an awesome dog, who lived with us for many years. The photo shows Dusty, who was the same kind of dog that Stormy was, white & fluffy.

This was taken long ago, and is a picture of my little parakeet, named Igor. He was green and yellow.

We let him fly around all the time in the house. This photo is of him standing on one of our wine bottles that had candle wax of all colors melted down the side.

Igor was fun. We had him for quite a few years, and he could say his name, and also could say ‘Pretty Bird’.

We got him as a baby from a lady we knew who raised parakeets. She had lots of them. We’d gotten other ones from her, too.

Whenever we’d go on road trips, Igor would come along in his cage. He was a good traveler. 🙂

Here are some more of the dogs:

  • Ginger (tan & white Basset Hound)
  • Maggie (tan, white & black Basset Hound- Ginger’s mother)
  • Bud (all black maybe a Labrador but smaller)
  • Weasel (Maggie & Bud’s daughter)

Dream

April 16, 2007

I was putting red dye on my hair, but first I had to spread it on some paper (2), like those Bingo sheets. It kept drying out too fast. Then I put it all over my hair, but forgot to time it.

I think I left it on about 2 hours! While waiting I think I went somewhere. People looked at me funny, but oh well … then I came home and people came over. I decided to rinse it off in the sink, so I did.
