Foster the People is a Los Angeles indie rock band that started off as a solo project for vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist Mark Foster, who had been working as a jingle composer for commercials. As his songs became more grandiose, Foster enlisted bassist Cubbie Fink and drummer Mark Pontius. This is the band’s debut single. (from Songfacts)
I first heard this song while on a long road trip in the car. It has a good beat, and interesting catch phrase hook. I had no idea what the rest of the song was about until much later on. Still it’s a good song, though sounds horrifying because of the violence that happens all too often these days.
Here are some Wiki statements from the writer of the song, Mark Foster …
The lyrics to “Pumped Up Kicks” are written from the perspective of a troubled and delusional youth with homicidal thoughts.[8] The lines in the chorus warn potential victims to “outrun my gun” and that they “better run, better run, faster than my bullet.” Foster said in a statement to CNN Entertainment, “I wrote ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ when I began to read about the growing trend in teenage mental illness. I wanted to understand the psychology behind it because it was foreign to me. It was terrifying how mental illness among youth had skyrocketed in the last decade. I was scared to see where the pattern was headed if we didn’t start changing the way we were bringing up the next generation.”[11] In writing the song, Foster wanted to “get inside the head of an isolated, psychotic kid”[8] and “bring awareness” to the issue of gun violence among youth, which he feels is an epidemic perpetuated by “lack of family, lack of love, and isolation.”
The Wiki article explains the song and how it came about. Interesting!

This is a very catchy song, Barbara. Foster was bullied in high school, while bassist Cubbie Fink has a cousin who survived the Columbine High School massacre in 1999.

Thanks, Jim! It is catchy, and gets your attention. Which is maybe a good thing, as his (Foster’s) aim was to bring awareness to the fact that kids do have mental problems at times, and we should know this happens. Too many tragedies already.

I am not a fan of guns and I hear that most of the gun violence is caused by mental illness, and we need to make laws to keep guns away from sick people.

I find the song catchy as well though I’ve never bother looking up nor paying attention to the lyrics. Now that I’ve seen it. Whoa!
