Mercury

Several things about Mercury I can think of.

1. The planet

2. The element

3. The character in myth tales

4. Maybe a superhero?

5. That stuff that used to be in thermometers

That’s the one I want to talk about right now. Those old kind of thermometers used to have Mercury inside them. It was sort of liquid, and a pretty silver color. It would rise up the little inside tube to measure how much heat your fever was.

Well, I never knew it was dangerous, until way later on.

Us kids would often break open a glass thermometer to get the cool, pretty Mercury out. Funny stuff it was. It would bead up, and slither around if you pushed it, and you couldn’t pick it up. It wouldn’t dissolve either. I know we used to take our money coins like a dime and somehow coat the coin in the Mercury. It would make it real shiny! We thought it was pretty cool.

Guess it didn’t hurt us or anything, playing with Mercury. At least I don’t think so … hahaha

  1. I never thought there was anything wrong with playing with mercury. Eating it made you sick, I knew that, but it was a key ingredient in mercurichrome, hich you put on open cuts. Or at least you used to…

    • Thanks, John! Same here, we just had fun messing with it. Oh I’d forgotten about Mercurochrome, and I’d done a post about it a long time ago. Fact is my mom and grand-ma would swab our throats with it when we were sick, too. Guess we never had any bad reactions from it. There were even some tablets you could suck on, too. 🙂
