The prompt today is a bit different. We have to find some song that didn’t reach the # 1 spot on the charts. I think this one I chose should have, but it only came close … at # 2. (I’m just going by the US charts such as Billboard).

“Gloria”, is a song I really like a lot. I’ve heard it a lot on the radio, too. To me it tells about a girl who is trying to decide if her thoughts are her own, or maybe just a dream or fantasy, or is she really hearing voices in her head.  … Or … Maybe she’s a spy who is programmed to follow this guy, and she has an implanted microphone in her head where she hears the voices of her programmers telling her what to do and think. ??

There is a lot more information on this song that is interesting at the link below.

From a Wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_(Umberto_Tozzi_song)

Gloria” (Italian pronunciation: [ˈɡlɔːrja]) is a 1979 love song written and composed in Italian by Umberto Tozzi and Giancarlo Bigazzi, and afterwards translated to English by Jonathan King. A 1982 cover version by American singer Laura Branigan peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 and has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Weeks at No. 2: three
Peak Date: Nov. 27, 1982

This was in the U. S. charts. It did reach number one in Canada and Australia.

“Gloria”, by Laura Branigan, was released from her album, “Branigan”, in 1982. It was written by Umberto Tozzi, Giancarlo Bigazzi, ad Trevor Veitch, and Laura Brannigan (she co-wrote some lyrics on her cover of this song). It is on the Atlantic label.

Gloria, you’re always on the run now
Running after somebody, you gotta get him somehow
I think you’ve got to slow down before you start to blow it
I think you’re headed for a breakdown, so be careful not to show it
You really don’t remember, was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don’t you think you’re fallin’?
If everybody wants you, why isn’t anybody callin’?
You don’t have to answer
Leave them hangin’ on the line, oh oh oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria)
I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you’ve been living under (Gloria)
But you really don’t remember, was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
A ha ha, a ha ha, Gloria, how’s it gonna go down?
Will you meet him on the main line, or will you catch him on the rebound?
Will you marry for the money, take a lover in the afternoon?
Feel your innocence slipping away, don’t believe it’s comin’ back soon
And you really don’t remember, was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don’t you think you’re fallin’?
If everybody wants you, why isn’t anybody callin’?
You don’t have to answer
Leave them hangin’ on the line, oh-oh-oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria)
I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you’ve been living under (Gloria)
But you really don’t remember, was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?

    • Thanks, Greg! Interesting thought. I have never imagined that this song would be used at weddings. Of course the couple can request any songs they want. My son-in-law worked as a wedding DJ for many years, and he’s heard it all. haha 🙂
