“Silver Threads and Golden Needles” is a good country classic song, and I remember it from way back. So far this morning I’ve listened to a lot of different recording artists playing this one and like them all. Linda Ronstadt has a few and they are all a little bit different, and one with the Eagles on stage. See it here

From a Wiki article:

Silver Threads and Golden Needles” is a song written by Dick Reynolds and Jack Rhodes.[1] It was first recorded by Wanda Jackson in 1956. The original lyrics, as performed by Jackson, contain a verse not usually included in later versions, which also often differed in other minor details.

Skeeter Davis recorded a version in 1962 after the Springfields hit for an album track; Davis’s version was released as a single by RCA in several international markets.

And, it has been recorded many times by many other artists over the years, including Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Linda Ronstadt, the Grateful Dead, and the Cowsills.

I don’t want your lonely mansion
With a tear in every room.
All I want’s the love you promised
Beneath the haloed moon.
But you think I should be happy
With your money and your name
And hide myself in sorrow
While you play your cheating game.
Silver threads and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine.
And I dare not drown my sorrow
In the warm glow of your wine.
You can’t buy my love with money
Cause I never was that kind.
Silver threads and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine.

Silver threads and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine.
And I dare not drown my sorrow
In the warm glow of your wine.
You can’t buy my love with money
Cause I never was that kind.
Silver threads and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine.
Silver threads and golden needles
Cannot mend this heart of mine.

And here is the original recording by Wanda Jackson, if you want to listen. It sounds lots more old type country than the later recordings.

  1. The Grateful Dead played this from 1966 through to 1970, probably only performing it about 20 times, but then they dropped from their repertoire. They did play it at the Filmore East. Nice choice Barbara.

    • Thanks, Jim! It’s a real country classic. I was surprised at how many have recorded it. I listened to quite a few, and they all sound a bit different. Interesting the Grateful Dead played it for quite some time in their performances. 🙂
