My theme for this year will actually be a theme! It will be …

  • TV Theme Songs

I’ll be showing short videos of the opening theme songs of old TV shows, and saying a few words about them. They are all shows I’ve watched in the past and enjoyed. Maybe you’ve seen some of them too, and will enjoy this look back at some favorites.

***

This is the final post for the A to Z Blog Challenge 2022. It’s been lots of fun going through all the old TV programs, listening to the theme songs, and being reminded why I liked the programs.

A big thank you goes out to everyone who visited, liked, and commented on these posts! 🙂

“Zorro” is a show I watched all the time as a kid. I liked the sword fighting, and especially liked to see Zorro riding his awesome black horse.

***

From a Wiki article:

Zorro (Spanish for ‘Fox’) is a fictional character created in 1919 by American pulp writer Johnston McCulley, He is typically portrayed as a dashing masked vigilante who defends the commoners and indigenous peoples of California against corrupt and tyrannical officials and other villains. His signature all-black costume includes a cape, a hat known as a sombrero cordobés, and a mask covering the upper half of his face.

He is also an accomplished rider, his trusty steed being a black horse called Tornado.

Zorro (also known as Disney’s Zorro) is an American action-adventure western series produced by Walt Disney Productions and starring Guy Williams. Based on the Zorro character created by Johnston McCulley, the series premiered on October 10, 1957, on ABC. The final network broadcast was July 2, 1959. Seventy-eight episodes were produced, and four hour-long specials were aired on the Walt Disney anthology series between October 30, 1960, and April 2, 1961.[2]

The show was very popular, especially with children, and its theme song (written by Norman Foster and George Bruns and first recorded by the Mellomen) was a hit recording for The Chordettes, peaking at #17 on the Hit Parade. It also created a problem with “Z” graffitiing on school desks and walls across the United States.[4]

Reruns of the series aired on The Disney Channel starting on the day the channel launched on April 18, 1983,[5] and continued until September 9, 2002.

The 1957–1959 episodes were colorized in 1992, and appeared in that format for a time on The Disney Channel and elsewhere, often alternating with the original black-and-white versions. It aired for ten years.

Cozi TV aired reruns of the series from January 5, 2015, to December 31, 2016.

Steve felt himself scooting backwards on the sand, away from Ghost, but didn’t know how he was doing it. He didn’t know how he could move at all. How could he be afraid of Ghost? Why was Ghost doing this to him?

He heard a muffled scream…where was that coming from?

“Steve, Steve…wake up,” Ghost said. He pinched Steve’s arm, hard. It made Steve scream. “Wake up,” Ghost yelled, right up in Steve’s face. Steve felt Ghost’s hot breath on him, and dared to open his eyes, again. Ghost’s long hair was hanging in his face, tickling his cheeks. He blinked, trying to clear his eyes.

“Ghost?”

“Wake up…you fainted,” Ghost yelled, and shook Steve’s shoulders.

“What? Wait…you did something to me…stay away,” Steve said, cringing.

Ghost sat back, “Huh? What are you talking about?”

Steve pushed himself up on his elbows. Looking closer at Ghost, he saw that he looked normal now, not with the weird eyes from before. “You made me see things,” he said. “Nothing was normal, and you were mean and scary.”

“Why would I…” Ghost began, but Steve interrupted him.

“You mind controlled me. You gave me a nightmare of every bad thing I ever did, and you were laughing about it. I can’t explain it, just don’t do it again, please Ghost, don’t do it again.”

~

By this time Linda and Melody had ran over to see why Steve was screaming. Out of breath, Linda said, “What’s the matter? Are you hurt?”

Ghost looked at her, then back to Steve. “Yeah, we’re okay. I think Steve fainted, and he had a nightmare, or something.”

Steve tried sitting up, but was still groggy. “That was no nightmare. That was you…you were doing things in my head.”

“Calm down, Steve,” Linda said. “We don’t know what you’re talking about. Ghost said you fainted, and we heard you scream. What were you dreaming about?”

Steve pointed to Ghost. “Ask him, he did it. He made me see things…bad thing.”

Ghost reached over to touch Steve’s arm, to reassure him, to let him know he didn’t manipulate his mind.

“Stay away from me,” Steve said, as he dodged Ghost’s hand. “You’re the craziest son-of-a-bitch I ever knew. I don’t know why I ever saved you in the first place. I had a feeling, way back then, that nothing good would come of it. Now, it’s finally here,” Steve was breathing hard, and now narrowed his eyes. “You’ve held me prisoner of your damn fantasy world long enough. I’m done with it. I’m done with you. Go away…go away…I’m commanding you, devil’s spawn…be gone.”

“Steve…Steve…” Linda tried to get his attention, to break his train of thought. “Come here. Come over here with me,” she said. Grabbing Steve’s hands, she pulled him up, and led him away down the beach.

“I mean it, Linda. I’m done. I’ve had enough. Get him away from me…from me…from me…” He was sobbing now. Linda held onto him, letting him cry it out.

~

Melody sat down in the sand, next to Ghost. “What the hell was he going on about?” she asked. “Why was he saying those mean things?”

Ghost was stunned speechless, at Steve’s outburst.

“Ghost, answer me,” Melody said.

He looked up in confusion. “I…uh…I don’t know. He thinks I controlled his dream? He thinks I put bad things in his head? I don’t know why. I didn’t do any of that,” Ghost said. After a few seconds, he looked Melody in the eyes, “I didn’t do that to Steve, but something did. Something had ahold of him…something bad. That must be the omen, you remember, from before? Maybe…now, Steve thinks he hates me. I know he doesn’t, but right now, he does.” He took Melody’s hands. “We have to get it off of him.”

“Shut up over there. Quit talking about me,” Steve yelled.

“What can we do, Ghost?” Melody asked. “It’s so late, and we’re not even home, and Steve has to drive us back.” She thought for a minute. “I guess I could drive his car back. I don’t know what to think, what to do. Besides, he really does hate me, and he wouldn’t let me drive his car, anyway.”

~

“What happened out here, Steve?” Linda asked. “What were y’all talking about right before all this yelling started? Do you remember?”

Steve nodded. “Hell, yeah I remember. I told Ghost it was over with us…for real…for good. Then he started doing something to my head. He didn’t want to hear what I said, and he made it worse, and he knew it, and wouldn’t stop. It wasn’t a dream, Linda, it wasn’t.”

“Okay, so why on Earth would you break up with Ghost?” Linda asked. “You love him, Steve. It’s not right.” She stopped to take a deep breath. “You didn’t mean it, did you?”

“Yeah, ’cause I know I’m no good for him. I make things worse. He could have been happy all these years, but I kept him for myself, and I did bad things, and I just now figured it out. So yeah, it’s for the best.” He rubbed his face. “But, now he’s gone all crazy about it. It’s all messed up. I think it’s the other way around, now. He made me  stay with his mind powers,” Steve said.

Linda was so confused and knew they all were, at this point. “Okay, so we all need to calm down, and talk it out…like now. You need to quit being…” she stopped. She didn’t want to say what she was thinking, which was that Steve was being ridiculous about the whole thing.

“Steve, you’ve done the best you can. I know you never meant for Ghost to be hurt, or you either, but you both have been. Now, it’s time to put it right. But, listen to me…we are exhausted. We are away from home, and we have to get back. The kids might wake up, with all this noise. We have to call a truce, or something. Do you understand?”

“I’m not taking him home with me, Linda…no way…not yet,” he said, shaking his head.

“Fine, then he can ride with me, but we are not just leaving him here. He can stay with us at Kinsey’s, but in the morning, it has to be dealt with.”

“Yeah, sure, whatever…” Steve said.

“Okay, then, let me go tell them how it’s going to be, and then let’s go home,” Linda said.

“The Young & the Restless” is a daytime soap opera that I watched all the time back in the 70s. It was interesting with characters playing families and their good and bad times, as all soaps do.

A funny remembrance of hearing this theme song has to do with my older daughter. Before she was born I guess she could hear this song played every day. Then when she was very tiny baby and even older, each time she’d hear this song played on TV as I watched the show, she would get very quiet and listen to the whole thing. No matter what else was going on, she listened and seemed to love it.

It is such a beautiful song.

From a Wiki article:

***

The Young and the Restless (often abbreviated as Y&R) is an American television soap opera created by William J. Bell and Lee Phillip Bell for CBS. The show is set in a fictionalized version of Genoa City, Wisconsin.[2] First broadcast on March 26, 1973, The Young and the Restless was originally broadcast as half-hour episodes, five times a week.[3][4] The show expanded to one-hour episodes on February 4, 1980.[5] In 2006, the series began airing previous episodes weeknights on SOAPnet[6] until 2013, when it moved to TVGN (now Pop). As of July 1, 2013, Pop still airs previous episodes on weeknights.[7][8] The series is also syndicated internationally.[9]

Since its debut, The Young and the Restless has won 11 Daytime Emmy Award for Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. It is also currently the highest-rated daytime drama on American television, a rank it has held for 32 years as of the end of the 2019–20 season. As of 2008, it had appeared at the top of the weekly Nielsen ratings in that category for more than 1,000 weeks since 1988.[14] As of December 12, 2013, according to Nielsen ratings, The Young and the Restless marked an unprecedented 1,300 weeks, or 25 years, as the highest-rated daytime drama.

***

Interesting history of this music:

Believe it or not, The Young and the Restless theme song wasn’t written for Y&R! Barry De Vorzon and Perry Botkin Jr. composed the music (“Cotton’s Dream”) for a 1971 film called Bless the Beasts and Children.

Two years later, Botkin rearranged the instrumental as the opening titles for the new daytime drama. The theme song played over pencil sketches of the original cast.

It wasn’t until the 1976 Olympics that the ditty captured the zeitgeist. Wide World of Sports used “Cotton’s Dream” to underscore a montage of gymnast Nadia Comaneci’s floor routines. Viewers were obsessed, and A&M Records capitalized on public interest by releasing it as a single titled “Nadia’s Theme (The Young and the Restless).” The commercial hit peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100—and even won the 1977 Grammy for “Best Instrumental Arrangement.”

“Nadia’s Theme” has become synonymous with daytime TV’s No. 1 drama, but it reentered the pop culture conversation in 2002, when R&B queen Mary J Blige sampled it for her hit song “No More Drama.”

The song peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, won Blige her first MTV Video Music Award, and brought down the house at the 2002 Grammys.

XENA, WARRIOR PRINCESS

Xena: Warrior Princess, starring Lucy Lawless, was a television show, created in 1995. The character of Xena, helped the innocents, those that needed defending.

Sorry to say, I never watched that show. I have seen Lucy Lawless on several talk shows, telling about her role. The way she told about it, made it seem like a very exciting, and fun show to watch.

Xena: Warrior Princess is an American fantasy television series filmed on location in New Zealand. The series aired in first-run syndication from September 4, 1995, to June 18, 2001.[1] Critics have praised the series for its strong female protagonist, and it has acquired a strong cult following, attention in fandom, parody, and academia, and has influenced the direction of other television series.[2]

Composer Joseph LoDuca wrote the theme music and incidental music, and co-wrote the lyrics for the songs in “The Bitter Suite.” The theme music was developed from the traditional Bulgarian folk song Kaval sviri,” sung by the Bulgarian State Television Female Vocal Choir. The original “Kaval sviri” can be heard where Xena races into battle in the Hercules episode “Unchained Heart.”

Steve led Ghost down to the water’s edge. They walked a few minutes, moving back as the tide brought the waves farther up onto the sand. Sighing, Steve stopped to sit awhile, and they both watched the moon rise above the horizon, making the darkness of the water sparkle.

Sighing again, Steve asked, “Are you afraid of me?”

Ghost hesitated for just a second, then slowly shook his head. “No…” he whispered.

Steve barely heard the word over the rhythmic sounds of the waves, but his heart skipped a beat. He knew Ghost was lying. Putting his fingers to his forehead, he closed his eyes. “Look at what I’ve done. I’ve hurt you more times than I can count, and now you are having to lie to me, and yourself, and I know that is something you just don’t do. It’s my fault, I know that. I’m to blame for everything. Me, and my god damn temper…and God knows, I’ve tried. I’ve tried, Ghost. I’ll never stop trying to get it under control, to make things better.”

Shaking his head, and swallowing hard, he continued. “I’m not making any excuses, and I don’t want you to make any for me, either. There is nothing good about what I’ve done. I’m sorry, so sorry for all of the pain I’ve caused you.”

Ghost started to say something, but Steve stopped him. “No…wait…I wish you would get angry at me…hate me…tell me to fuck off, and mean it…but, that’s not you. I’m no good for you, Ghost. I’ve messed up your life too many times. I should have never tried to keep you…like a caged up bird or something, making it seem like you’re a prisoner, only doing what I wanted for you to do. I’m ashamed at how many times I’ve begged you to love me, when you could have gone anywhere, done anything, and had the kind of life you deserved…not full of pain.”

Ghost could feel Steve’s anguish. He knew Steve was hurting inside, as much as he himself was. Reaching for Steve, he brought him close, sobbing into his hair. …the truth hurts, it hurts so bad…

“Don’t, Ghost. Don’t try to make me feel better. I don’t want to feel better, when I’ve made you miserable all this time. I know that now. I tried to stop hurting you…I tried to stop thinking it, hoping it would go away, but it hasn’t, and I haven’t. Look at what I did, just tonight.”

Ghost raised up his head. “Steve, stop hating yourself. It doesn’t matter, I told you before.”

“It does matter. It has to stop. I have to stop, and I know you won’t…so I have to be the one…to call it off…to stop myself from hurting you…by hurting you this one last time. It has to be over…we have to be over. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I feel I won’t ever change enough before something even worse happens.”

Ghost looked into Steve’s eyes, really looked. There was just enough moonlight to see the tears on Steve’s face, his dark eyes full of pain. Brushing away the tears with his fingers, putting the drops into his mouth, he said, “You are part of me, Steve, you always have been. I would have no life, no reason to live, without you…even then, even now, forever more.”

Ghost continued to stare into Steve’s eyes, holding his gaze steady. “You won’t ever be rid of me, Steve. I’ve seen to that, a long, long, time ago. You can try, you can hurt me, you can kill me again, it does not matter. We are bonded, we are blood, we are…we are…”

Steve was getting a strange vibe from Ghost. His thoughts of leaving were being pushed right out of his mind. The thoughts were fading away. While he was trying to recapture them, because he’d said them out loud, and they were important, he was also thinking, “Ghost is in a trance…he’s acting weird…he’s controlling my mind, right now…”

It was such a strange feeling, and he was powerless to stop it. “Maybe Ghost put a spell on me, or a curse. Maybe that curse from long ago, or maybe a new one. He’s not afraid of me…uh-uh…but, I’m afraid of him…” He’d never thought about it like that, before. It was totally opposite…he’d never had any control over Ghost, but he was, and had been controlled by Ghost…to be Ghost’s puppet, his whimsy, to be manipulated…even the bad stuff. Ghost was making a fantasy of his dreams come to be real life. This was too much to think about. He didn’t understand it at all. He just wanted to make it stop.

His heart pounding, he came to this crazy conclusion. “This is the most unreal thought I’ve ever had…this is not my thinking at all, it is Ghost’s. Why is he making me think crazy things?” He shook his head, trying to clear it of the whirling thoughts. Images were flashing non-stop, faster and faster, one after the other…and still, Ghost stared into his eyes.

“How can I have thoughts about my thoughts, at the same time… and his, too. What the hell is happening?” He closed his eyes; he had to break away from Ghost’s intense gaze. “I’m the crazy one,” he said. “I have been all along, just like Melody said. She knew…she knew…” He took a shuddery breath. “Ghost?” he breathed out. “Am I dying? Is this what if feels like…everything I ever did keeps flashing in my head, like a fast forward movie, or something.”

He opened his eyes, just for a second, to see if Ghost was still staring at him. He was…and he was grinning his crooked grin. “Make it stop, please, Ghost, make it stop.” Steve’s teeth were chattering, now, but he felt waves of heat rushing into his face, at the same time.

“Welcome Back Kotter”, is a really fun show we watched when it originally ran on TV, and we still watch it now in re-runs. Lots of wisecracking humor and great actors.

From a Wiki article:

Welcome Back, Kotter is an American sitcom starring Gabe Kaplan as a high school teacher in charge of a racially and ethnically diverse remedial class called the “Sweathogs.” Recorded in front of a live studio audience, the series aired on ABC from September 9, 1975, to May 17, 1979.[1]

The show stars stand-up comedian and actor Gabriel “Gabe” Kaplan as the main character, Gabe Kotter, a wisecracking teacher who returns to his alma mater, James Buchanan High School in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, New York, to teach a remedial class of loafers, the Sweathogs. The rigid vice principal, Michael Woodman (John Sylvester White), dismisses the Sweathogs as witless hoodlums and only expects Kotter to contain them until they drop out or are otherwise banished. As a former remedial student and a founding member of the original class of Sweathogs, Kotter befriends the current Sweathogs and stimulates their potential. A pupil-teacher rapport is formed, and the students often visit Kotter’s Bensonhurst apartment, sometimes via the fire escape window, much to the chagrin of his wife, Julie (Marcia Strassman).

The popular theme song, “Welcome Back”, written and recorded by John Sebastian, former frontman for The Lovin’ Spoonful, became a No. 1 hit in the spring of 1976.
