There are quite a few Gordon Lightfoot songs I like, but this one is my favorite. I just like all the words – ghost, dark castles, wishing well, paperback novel – and then the music, and his voice. I guess I never knew what it was about really until I read about it, but it all just comes together to be a super song.

What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
‘Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I am a ghost, you can’t see
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the drugstore sells
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won’t read that book again
Because the ending’s just too hard to take
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two, a movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now, love, let’s be real
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feeling’s gone and I just can’t get it back
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
‘Bout a ghost from a wishing well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You’ll know that I’m just trying to understand
The feelings that you lack
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feeling’s gone
And I just can’t get it back
Also one of my favorites! ❤️

I bet that you could tell a story “about a ghost from a wishing well” Barbara, as I know you are fascinated with ghosts. Great choice.

I was introduced to Gordon LIghtfoot by the 70’s station I listened to back in the 90’s, and I’m also a fan of a lot of his songs, including this one!

Thanks, Bill! Glad you like this one, too. I’ve enjoyed his songs for quite awhile, and they are usually some kind of storytelling within the lyrics. 🙂

Gordon Lightfoot is at the top of my charts. Didn’t know this was about his divorce. He knows how to channel his feelings into songs so well!
