This week Lauren asks us about our cooking skills, and how we learned to cook, and what all we’ve cooked. Also if we’ve had any cooking disasters. Thanks so much, Lauren! 🙂

One of the best memories I have of learning to cook was when I made a cake. Here’s what I wrote in my diary when I was 10 years old, and my notes about it which I’ve blogged about before.
1/6/61 – I went to school and when I got hom (home) after a while we went bowlling (bowling). I baked my first cake and made a tea party with P (sister)
Now that is an interesting fact/co-incident. I remember baking that cake, a very simple one from a kid’s cook-book. It turned out really good. Then, many years later my own daughter was born… on a January 6th. So…for many years I baked a cake for her birthday…each January 6th!

After that I probably made that cake other times along with other recipes in that little book.
In Jr. High school I took Home Economics where we did cooking and sewing. That was fun.
Before I got married, I didn’t really know much about cooking, so I made a point to watch how my mom cooked things so I could do it too. I still cook food the same way as back then. Why change it if it works, right!
I’m not really an experimental kind of cook. I know how to do all these I learned so I don’t need a recipe for any of them. If I do try something new, I will follow a set recipe. I do follow the recipes when I made cookies, though. Cookies are a favorite of mine to make, especially at Christmas, with the cut out and decorated ones.
My worst disaster in the kitchen was the exploding enchiladas incident. A huge mess! The whole glass dish full of home made enchiladas exploded, throwing hot food and glass everywhere! I wrote a blog post about it here
A few years ago I wanted to learn how to make decorated cakes, so took a class at the craft store. That was fun, and I learned a lot. Even if we messed up, we got to eat our mistakes! haha . I made a lot of the cakes using all the piping tips. It was just for fun, and we enjoyed them.
Here’s a few photos of some of the cakes I made:
- Hello Kitty cake
- Happy Cat Day cake
- Election Day 2000 cake
- Amazing Race cake
- Clown cake
- Pink roses on the cake (sorry – blurry)

Beautiful cakes. I took a class on that too back in 1992. I made one o the ones you put a doll in and the cake is the dress. XO

Thanks, Ellen! We had fun in the class I took, too. I’ve seen those like you mention and they are so pretty! Cool you made one! 🙂

Thanks for joining in. It’s great that you were able to watch your mom to learn valuable techniques. I had a kids cookbook too. I don’t think I ever wrote about it. Good for you for still having that record. I taught myself to use tips for decorating cakes. I owned numerous speciality pans too. After the kids grew up I stopped decorating cakes. Your cakes are lovely.

Thanks, Lauren! Fun topic! I did enjoy using those tips to make different shapes and designs in the frosting. I did a lot of cakes, and then not so many, until I don’t make any these days. It was fun to learn to cook, and I guess it was okay, as no one complained! haha 🙂

Beautiful cakes Barbara. Making cake at 10 years off age is amazing. You’ve had a lot of cooking adventures ❤️

I don’t do much baking. More of a stew/goulash expert. (toss in everything)
But I love reading old cookbooks.
Your cakes are lovely. I couldn’t cut into a one.

Thanks so much! Mmm – stew and goulash sounds great! It’s been awhile since I’ve made stew, and I really should as it would be great on a cold day.
I’m not much for reading cook books (my husband likes to, though). I still have some handwritten recipes from my mom and mother in law that I’ve kept.
So glad you like seeing my cakes! 🙂

I have a lot of those handwritten recipes too. At one of my bridal showers — a book with some favorite recipes of each guest. All yellow and faded after these many many years.
I’ll do the cooking if my husband does the chopping.

That is a great idea – sharing favorite recipes at a bridal shower!
We are mostly the same here, as my husband does all the prep work for meals, and i do the cooking. haha – it works for us just fine. 🙂

Adorable! Cakes and story. How did I not know you had this talent?? And more importantly, kicking myself for not “dropping” in every January 6th! Lol

Thanks so much, Kelly! You’d sure be welcome to come by for cake! Not sure but y’all may have moved away when I was doing all the cake decorating. I haven’t done any for a long time though. I’m glad you like the cake photos! ❤

I had a kid’s cookbook, too. Betty Crocker, I think. I may still have it somewhere. Baking is always fun. I love Christini Tosi’s desserts. She says most American cooks do not have good success because they measure ingredients instead of weighing them. I think that may be correct, but I sure did love my grandmothers cakes measured by handfuls. It was fun reading your post and has inspired me to bake a cake!

Thanks, Maggie! It’s good to get kids to learn a bit about cooking, I think. Not sure what my little cookbook was, but it had a lot of simple recipes.
Could be weighing instead of measuring ingredients would make a difference, but it would seem strange to me.
I do remember my granny cooking like that, just a handful or a pinch of whatever, and it always turned out great! Hope you got a chance to bake one soon! 🙂
