Here are some questions to think about:

At what age did you become concerned about the clothes you wore? Did you get hand-me-downs or new clothes? Were any of your clothes made by hand? If so, by whom? Were you allowed to select your own clothes and assemble your own ensembles? At what age did you start buying your own wardrobe?

What fashion fads did you adopt? Did you have certain colors you loved to wear? Were you of the hippie generation of perhaps a child of the 1980s? What was the wildest or craziest outfit you ever wore?

What about jewelry? Did you have piercings? Were they done by you or by others? What jewelry fads so you remember?

Now think about your hairstyles. What cuts did you sport? Did you ever color your hair? Did you try to alter your hair in any other way (cutting, ironing, shaving, curling)?

Okay, here’s my many haircuts/styles over the years. I’m lazy so didn’t want to go through all my many photo albums to find a sample of each, though.

At the end, I’ll say a few things about what I remember of them.

I guess it all started when I was really little. In my baby book my mom wrote that I got my first permanent at age 2 years old! I didn’t have any say so about it, and I’d get a perm quite a few times. I finally got to have some say later on.  What I wanted was long straight hair, like my cousin had, so I could wear a ponytail.

I’d get a very short pixie cut, then it would get this tight curly perm to be called a poodle look.

Then awhile later on I got to have it a little longer and no perm, but curled into a pageboy. About jr. high school a popular hairstyle was the flip. We’d backcomb the top and ends, then use lots of hairspray.

When that fad went out I got my hair cut into another shortish do, I think was called a mop top, to kind of look like the Beatles hair.

High school my hair was long again, and straight, then flipped back edges and layered. Later this turned into the shag cut. I liked this one a lot and kept it this way for a long time.

Next was the 70s long straight and ironed hair. Yes, we’d use the real iron and ironing board.

I still laugh because my best friend always said, and still to this day still says, that I had the good hair. Her hair was medium and wavy naturally.

The Swing was a fun hair-do. It was cut short in the back and the front/sides got longer. Sort of a geometric look.

Then came the spiral curl permanent. Maybe it was called something else, but you’d have to use a hair pick to fluff it out.

Now my hair is just long and straight, I don’t put dye on it, so it’s just natural brown with gray.

Over the years, with whichever style I went with, I’d change colors with dyes every so often. (see list)

Then there was the ‘wig’ years.

I always liked wearing fun wigs. At the time they were not very expensive, and they were not made of real hair, but you could wash and style them.

Wiglets were fun. A small (or larger) hairpiece you attach to the top of your pulled up hair. You’d style them with large circular rings and spray a lot of hair spray on it all.

Falls were great if you wanted to add more to your regular hair or make it look like you had long hair. I had a few of these.

Dutch boy wigs. I had a couple of these in different colors. It was a full wig, with a medium length. My sister had some, too.
