A sun dog is formed from ice crystals in the atmosphere, appearing as either a bright or muted light to the side/sides of the sun. Here’s the wikipedia information on the topic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog

I like how this photo I took one day turned out. It shows the bright sun in the middle, with the sundog flares of light stretching up into a deep blue sky. There are also a few fluffy white clouds in the frame, also.

    • Thanks! You know what – this is just like it came out with the camera, which is my phone. I have no idea why there is a red circle, or what the white spot is. Basically I just aimed the phone up and had to close my eyes because it was so bright. I like to think it’s something strange, though! 🙂

      • I thought you had made the circle on the photo. By features I meant various goings-on in the photo, with clouds and reflections and all. I did a sky shot I called the post “into the sun” I was impressed with the sky/clouds…but then the sun pics were fascinating (to me anyway. )

I think your circle actually is something going on…lol aliens maybe? I never rule anything out. 🙂

      • Same here – I know there are many strange things that happen that we just don’t really know what is what. Maybe this was just some quirk of the camera, but who knows. I like to think there was something more to it, too. 🙂
