As they entered the kitchen of Trevor’s house, the murder house, Zach flipped the light switch, but nothing happened; the old house remained in darkness. Shining their flashlights around, they could see the dust motes hanging heavy in the still air, yet the leaves on the vines were rustling, as if a breeze was stirring them. Kinsey and Terry hadn’t been in the murder house in years. Their eyes were wide, taking it all in.

“Dude, what do ya think?” Terry whispered over to Kinsey.

“Kinda spooky,” Kinsey said. His normal voice echoed off the walls.

Trevor led the way into the living room. “Just put the card table in the middle, I guess,” he said. Terry had brought the table, and some folding chairs for the event. He and Kinsey set it up, and arranged the six folding chairs around it. Then, taking a tablecloth, he spread it over the table, and set a battery lantern he’d brought, in the center.

“Ok, now what?” Terry asked.

“Ghost, what do you need us to do?” Steve asked.

Ghost had been walking around the edges of the room, getting the feel of the place. “We can all sit down, now,” he said, as he put his backpack up on the table.

“Trevor, Zach, y’all sit on either side of me,” he said. His giggling had stopped as soon as he stepped into the house. Now it was all business.

They all took a chair, as they watched Ghost take out his magic supplies. Giving Kinsey a notepad, and marker, he said, “This you should write down everything that happens, as best you can, ’cause when things get started, it might happen fast. Terry, did you bring the recorder?”

“Yeah, it’s right here.”

“Ok, turn it on, now,” he instructed. “Steve, you take pictures. I put the camera on night vision, so it won’t flash, but we’ll see what happens.”

Steve nodded, taking the camera in front of him.

“Uh…let’s see, what else?” Ghost thought for a minute, trying to remember the steps he’d planned. “Ok, Zach, here’s a bunch of candles. Light them, then put them around in a big circle around us and the table. And here, Trevor, take this,” Ghost handed him a box of salt. “Inside the circle of candles, pour an unbroken line of salt, all the way around.”

“What’s it for?” asked Kinsey.

“It’s to let us have a space of protection against whatever shows up,” Ghost said. “They can’t cross our salt…at least I hope not.”

Steve was impressed at the way Ghost was taking charge, setting things up, assigning duties, and explaining it all. Yesterday he was scared to get out of the car. He wondered where he’d come by all this information. It wasn’t in any instruction book. Then, he remembered…Ghost was from the mountains. There was lots of inherent psychic gifts imbedded in Ghost’s very being…a kind of knowing…a knowledge passed down for generations. He was able to tap into this consciousness without even trying. He’d seen it happen before. Now he felt confident that everything would be ok, and that Ghost was in control. He continued to be awed, as he watched.

The others could feel it, too. They’d never seen Ghost be his real self…just the wounded child, and the silly side of his personality. Even Kinsey and Terry didn’t fully know him as well as Steve did, although they’d been around him for years. Trevor and Zach hadn’t even heard him sing, yet.

As Steve looked around the group, sitting there in the circle of candles, with shadows flickering on the empty walls, he could sense the anticipation building.

Ghost continued his preparations with complete concentration and authority. He took out more items from his backpack, one by one, setting them on the cloth covered table.

“This here is the instructions for the ointment. I’ll mix up this, and this…” he said, as he took little vials out. He explained every piece, and explained every step, and what he expected to happen. He also suggested to everyone how they should or shouldn’t react, to the best of their ability.

He pulled out his sage brooms. “These are for after, to cleanse the whole house.” Then he reminded them of his and Trevor’s safe words. Next, he pulled out the silver, cross necklace, and put it around his neck. “This is for my protection, as the contactor.” He took a moment to think.

“Guys, I have no idea what’s gonna happen. I’m just gonna say whatever I think of, so try not to laugh, okay? I might go out of here…I mean, like a trance, or something, where I’m letting the spirit speak through me. I’ll probably sound weird, and maybe say mean things to y’all. But please don’t get fooled. The evil will try everything to get us out of here. Just try to stay, and give me support. I’m doing this ’cause y’all asked me to,” he said, looking at Zach and Trevor.

“Now, if y’all have a question you want answered, go ahead and ask it. It may speak, or just bang on the wall, or lift the table, or anything…so, don’t be surprised.” He looked at each of them to see if they were understanding. They all nodded that they did.

“Okay, any questions before we start?”

“Yeah, what I want answered is why did it make my father kill my whole family but me?” Trevor asked.

“And…” Zach added, “Can you make it go away for good, and leave us alone?”

“I’ll try to make it go away, and I’ll ask your question too, Trevor, but you ask too, ’cause it’s your house, and your family,” Ghost said. “So, are we ready?” They all agreed that they were.

Ghost closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The rest of them held theirs, darting their eyes from Ghost to the shadows in the corners of the room, scared of what would happen.

Ghost began with a prayer of protection and strength, in his own unique way.

“Lord, God, Jesus, Holy Spirit, Holy Ghost, Mary, Joseph, and all the Saints above…well, all y’all up there…please hear this prayer. We’re gonna try and undo some kinda evil that’s been causing a whole lotta trouble down here for Trevor, and Zack too, ’cause they love each other, and live in this here murder house. And, it was Trevor’s father that killed them all except him. He wants to know why, and we all want the evil to go away forever. So, can you help us, be here to protect us, and give us the courage and strength to make it happen? We don’t mean to cause any offense to y’all, in case y’all are against doing a séance, but we didn’t know how else to do it. So, anyway….that’s all…amen.”

Ghost opened his eyes. “Now I’m gonna mix up this stuff.”

Kinsey was writing as fast as he could…faster than he thought possible, even. The marker seemed to have a mind of it’s own, putting down everything. He held on. Steve was snapping picture after picture, aiming the camera at everything and at nothing.

Ghost looked at the paper that Steve had drawn the instructions on so he could read them. Kinsey glanced over at the paper, but it just looked like hieroglyphics to him. Then, going step by step, Ghost put drops of one vial, into the mortar cup, and sprinkled the powdery one on top of that, then another few drops of a different liquid, and he mashed them all together with the pestle, into an oily ointment. It smelled of sage and roses.

Taking his finger, he dipped it into the mixture. He smeared it onto his forehead, in the shape of a cross, and did the same for everyone else. He took three deep breaths, and said, “If there are any spirits here, let us know, now.”

They waited in silence. “Okay, then…everyone hold hands,” he said. “We are all in agreement together. We call you to come and be known to us.” The little battery lantern flickered once, then went out. Only the candles remained, to light the room. They all jumped. Trevor on one side of Ghost, Zach on the other, and they could feel each other’s heartbeats in their fingers.

“Thank you for giving us a sign,” Ghost said. “I have to ask you some questions, now. We need an answer…a clear answer. Who are you? Are you Trevor’s father?”

Kinsey looked down at his paper, “Ghost,” he whispered, “it made me write no, about ten times.”

Ghost smiled, and thanked the entity for the answer. “Why are you bothering Trevor and Zach? Why the vines…why? And, are you evil? Are you a demon, or just having fun with them and the house? We’d like to have it stop. I’m asking real nice. Please stop with the dirty tricks, and scaring them. them…and…and…” Ghost had asked the questions fast, and now he had a strange feeling coming on him. He felt so cold, he began to shiver…his teeth chattering. He jerked his icy hands from Trevor and Zach, Everyone else let go, too. All were staring at Ghost.

SCREAMING YELLOW ZONKERS!

Yummy, sweetened popcorn in a box…that’s Screaming Yellow Zonkers!

Back in the 1960s and early 1970s, Zonkers were a must have snack among the hippie crowd. The popcorn tasted great when you had the munchies, but the box it came in was special.

You bought the snack as much for the box, as for the popcorn. The box was black, one of the first products to be packaged in a black box. There was lots of writing on the box…some of it absurd, mostly funny, with cartoon characters and witty (so we thought) sayings. That was the main selling point…the snack was just a bonus.

At times Zonkers were hard to find at the store. If someone found a store that was selling them, word was passed around. I remember at least once, driving way out of my way to find them. Down unfamiliar streets, I went, finally finding the little convenience store that reportedly had Zonkers. It was so worth the trip…I had my Zonkers!

Screaming Yellow Zonkers were discontinued in 2007, but as of May 2012, they have been in production again, in limited editions. You can find them at times at Walgreens Drug Stores!

Flower of the Day – Bougainvillea

This one was at the garden center, and was pretty tall. I’m wondering why there was a tiny white flower on the red petals.

Update: I finally found out that this flower is a Bougainvillea!

Pretty red flowers on a bushy like plant, and has a tiny white flower in the middle of the red petals.

“I’m real hot, Steve,” Ghost said, as he held on to the porch railing. He was blinking the stinging sweat from his eyes.

“What did you do in there?” Steve asked.

“I drank a courage potion, that’s all…now, I’m hot.” He swayed a little, and tried to focus on Steve’s face.

“You’re drunk, is what it looks like. What was in it…whiskey?…and how much?” Steve asked, after smelling Ghost’s breath.

Ghost held up his hand with the finger and thumb about three inches apart. “That’s all, and you know what…it did kinda taste like whiskey,” he giggled.

“Shit, Ghost, you can’t go over there like that…all stumbling around and whiskey breath. What makes you sober up real fast?”

“Another potion?” Ghost slurred, “Go look.”

“What would it say on the bottle…antidote for drunkenness?” Steve asked, giving him a look.

“Prolly would, or maybe, sober-up?” Ghost laughed, and almost fell down.

Steve gritted his teeth, but went inside to look in the back room. Pawing around through the shelves, he found all kinds of herbs, potions, pills, and powders. They all had weird names he couldn’t pronounce. “This is impossible,” he said.

Then he had an idea. He’d call Miz Caitlin; she’d have a suggestion, he was sure. So, he called her, and when she answered, he said, “Miz Caitlin, this is Steve, Ghost’s friend, and I need your help, real quick.”

“Steve, how are you, dear?” Miz Caitlin said. “How’s Ghost? I haven’t had a visit from you two in awhile.” She went on, but Steve apologized, and interrupted her.

“Miz Caitlin, I need an antidote for…well, for being drunk…to sober up real quick. We got somewhere to go, and it’s important, and Ghost drank a potion,” he explained. “It was a little, blue bottle, and said courage on the label. Oh, it smelled like whiskey or something, and now Ghost is drunk…can’t even stand up.” Steve stopped a second to take a breath. “We gotta go meet some people, like right now…so what do I do, and what do I give him? Please say there’s something.”

“Oh, Steve, that sounds like what it was. Ghost isn’t a whiskey drinker, so it must have hit him hard. Let’s see…let’s see, now…” she took a moment to think.

“I have a bunch of stuff here,” Steve said, “but, I don’t know what they are.” He read off some of the names of the potions.

“Ok, you have what you need, then,” she said. “You’ll have to mix a few of them together, then make him drink it. It’ll work like a miracle.” She told him which ones to mix.

Steve set out the potions she’d mentioned, pouring them into a coffee cup, as she instructed him. “Ok, now what? Just pour it down him?”

“Yes, all of it. He’ll be fine in about ten minutes,” she said. “Don’t worry, Steve. Give my love to that Ghost child, and y’all come visit me, real soon, ok?”

“Ok, Miz Caitlin, we will…and thanks.” He hung up the phone, and went back outside. He couldn’t see Ghost anywhere.

“Ghost, where are you?” he hollered. He looked all around the front yard, and he wasn’t in the car either. He checked the back yard, but he wasn’t there. As he came back to the front, he heard his own name being called. It was coming from down the long, dirt road, past the driveway. Then, he saw Ghost, staggering among the trees, off the road.

As fast as he could manage, with the cup in one hand, and his one crutch under his arm, Steve went to fetch Ghost. “Ghost, stand still, I’m coming to get you,” he shouted.

Ghost finally saw Steve, and made his way toward him, but ran into a tree, and fell down. “Where were you, Steve? I thought you went and left me here. I was gonna walk over there.”

His eyes were unfocused, as he peered up at Steve. “Why did ya leave me?”

“I didn’t, I was in the house,” Steve said. “Don’t get up, just stay still, Ghost.”

“Why?”

“Just do it. Now drink this, all of it…now.” Steve held the cup of liquid up to Ghost’s mouth.

He made a face. “It don’t smell good…what’s in it?” Ghost asked.

“It’s the cure for being drunk on that potion you had. It’ll make you feel better. Now, drink it.”

“Okay, okay,” Ghost drank it all, gagged, then hiccupped. “Thass nasty, Steve,” he shuddered.

“Whatever…now just sit here, and you’ll be back to normal…whatever that is…” Steve said. So Ghost sat, and Steve watched to see what would happen.

“Steve, I feel weird.”

Steve rolled his eyes, “Just go with it, it’s supposed to sober you up fast.”

After a few more minutes, Steve could see Ghost’s eyes were focusing, again. “How ya feel, now? Stand up, and see if you can walk.”

Ghost did, and seemed to be able to walk around, ok. “Hey, I think I’m back. I’m not dizzy anymore.”

“Good, now get in the car, we’re leaving, now. You should be good as new by the time we get there.”

They walked back to the yard, and after Steve had gotten his keys and Ghost’s backpack, he drove out to the highway. “Maybe those potions really do work, after all. At least this one did, or maybe it’s just the power of suggestion.”

“Oh, they work,” Ghost said. “How did you find the right one?”

“I called Miz Caitlin.”

“You did?” Ghost was surprised.

“Yep, I told her you were drunk on your ass, and she had me mix up a couple of liquid…I don’t know whats, and said you should drink it. And, I did, and you did, and now you’re fine.” Steve smiled.

“Crap…you told her I was drunk?” Ghost whined. “Why’d ya do that?”

“Because you were, dude.”

“Humpf,” Ghost pouted.

“What…she’s smart…she knows you drink wine and beer and all. It’s no secret,” Steve said.

“I know, but I’ll get a lecture, anyway.”

Steve sighed, “Well, did the potion give you any courage, like it said on the bottle, at least?”

“Maybe…but, mostly it just made me hot.”

“And drunk,” Steve laughed.

~

They arrived at Trevor’s house, and drove up the long driveway, to see the others waiting.

“About time,” Kinsey said, when they’d gotton out of the car. “You told me an hour, but it’s been more like two,” he looked at his watch.

“Sorry,” said Steve. “We had a situation, but it’s fine now.”

“Yeah, I was drunk,” Ghost giggled, “But, not anymore.” He spun around, but bumped into Terry, who held on to him, keeping him from falling down.

“Dude, are you sure about that?” Terry asked.

“Yep, I drank a potion, then another one, and I’m ok, now.”

Trevor and Zach were speechless. They were thinking, what had they gotten themselves into, letting a crazy person go into their haunted house, to do battle with demons. They gave each other a look, then burst out laughing, that they’d both been thinking the same thing.

Kinsey brought them all back to reality. In a loud and deep voice, he announced…”I’m here to…to…be the monitor…to keep this from getting out of hand. And, Terry is my back up.”

Steve stifled a laugh he could feel building.

“Now,” Kinsey continued, “let’s go over the steps, out here, then we’re going in.”

They all agreed, and this took about an hour to do, what with all the interruptions, and side conversations. By the time they were ready, it was full on dark out, and there was no moon. They each had a flashlight, and so, all traipsed around to the back door. Trevor took out his machete-like knife, hacking through the thick vines covering the door.

The six of them entered the murder house, one by one.

GETTING WORDY WITH IT

Well, being a writer, I love words. Word games are a favorite way to work with words. One of the first word games I learned to play was Anagrams. You would draw from a pile of letter tiles, and try to make as many words from them as you could. You’d take turns with other players, drawing tiles until all the tiles were used. The person with the most formed words, won the game.

From that, I went on to crossword puzzles, and skeleton puzzles. Next up, I think, was word search games, then Scrabble and Boggle. Other games that make use of words, are Scattergories, Scrutinize, and the old favorites…Password, and Mad Libs. There are a lot of pencil puzzle books too, with all kinds of fun games to do inside.

Television game shows make use of words for the contestants to play the game. These are fun to watch and play along to at home. Some of these include, Jeopardy, $100,000 Pyramid, and Wheel of Fortune.

I still like to play all of these games. So, to someone who likes word games, there are plenty to choose from.

Have fun being ‘wordy’!

Which would you rather throw away: Love or Money?  …I wouldn’t want to throw away either of these.

Do you believe you should do one thing a day that scares you? … Only if you are the adventurous type.

What’s the last thing you do at night? … Read a book until I fall asleep, then turn out the light and turn on my white noise machine tuned to ocean waves.

If you could own a mythical creature (unicorn, phoenix, etc.), which one would you pick? (A nod to the soon ending 2021 A-Z Blogging Challenge, my topic this year “Mythical Creatures”)

I would have the creature known as Bastet. This is an Egyptian cat goddess who was known for her protection over all cats and for watching over the household.

From a Wiki article:

Bastet is the Egyptian goddess of the home, domesticity, women’s secrets, cats, fertility, and childbirth. She protected the home from evil spirits and disease, especially diseases associated with women and children.

Here’s my Bastet cat necklace. It’s silver and sky blue with Egyptian decor engraved on it. My daughter bought it for me in Las Vegas at the Luxor Hotel.
