This is a fun prompt! I like pets and animals of all kinds. Problem is, there are so many great songs to choose from. I went with this one because I just happened to remember it, and I hadn’t heard it in a long time. I’ve liked a lot of the Everly Brothers songs over the years. This video is an updated one from I believe it said 1983, at a live performance of theirs. There was an old black & white one from way back when, but it was a little blurry. There are lots of kinds of birds mentioned, too.
From the Wiki article:
“Bird Dog” is a song written by Boudleaux Bryant and recorded by the Everly Brothers. It was released in 1958 and was a #1 hit on the Billboard Country Chart. The song also hit number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 as well as peaking at number two for three weeks on the R&B charts.
The song deals with the singer’s dismay that a boy by the name of Johnny is trying to take his girlfriend away. The singer calls him a bird dog as a result of his behavior.
The musical structure is relatively unusual in that it has a 12 bar blues stanza and an 8 bar blues chorus.

Johnny is the joker (he’s a bird)
A very funny joker (he’s a bird)
But when he jokes my honey (he’s a dog)
His jokin’ ain’t so funny (what a dog)
Johnny is the joker that’s been tryin’ to steal my baby (he’s a bird dog)
Johnny sings a love song (like a bird)
He sings the sweetest love song (you ever heard)
But when he sings to my gal (what a howl)
To me it’s just a wolf dog (on the prowl)
Johnny wants to fly away and puppy love my baby (he’s a bird dog)
Hey bird dog, get away from my quail
Hey bird dog, you’re on the wrong trail
Bird dog you better leave my lovey dove alone
Hey bird dog, get away from my chick
Hey bird dog, you better get away quick
Bird dog you better find a chicken little of your own
Johnny kissed the teacher (he’s a bird)
He tip-toed up to reach her (he’s a bird)
Well, he’s the teachers pet now (he’s a dog)
What he wants he can get now (what a dog)
He even made the teacher let him sit next to my baby (he’s a bird dog)
This song containing both bird and dog has become the most popular choice today. Thanks for joining in Barbara.
Thanks, Jim! I just happened to think of this. I haven’t seen any other entries yet, today, but will soon. It’s a good one for the prompt! 🙂
You sure pull out some cute songs. No time to listen but I love to read the words.
Thanks so much, Oneta! Glad you like the songs. It’s nice we can find the words these days, because for so many years we pretty much just had to guess at what they were singing! 🙂
Boudleaux (and sometimes his wife Felice) wrote some great songs for the Everlys. This is but one example. Good pick!
Thanks, John! Very good team to come up with some really good songs. I’ve liked quite a few of the Everly Brothers songs through the years. Good to see they were still playing, at least at the time of the video. 🙂
Sad, but Phil died in 2014. They were really good together. There are some videos of them with Tennessee Ernie Ford on YouTube that are fun to watch, if you’re looking for something like that. Ernie seemed really impressed by them.
Oh, I didn’t know that. Yes, sad. I did enjoy lots of their songs.
I finally got around seeing this. It must be a Texas thing. It played on the radio even in the 70’s when I was growing up. It’s a great song! 🙂
Thanks, Lisa! Maybe so, because I used to hear it a lot on the radio, too. It’s fun to sing along to. 🙂
