Helicopter!
This is a helicopter that was flying over the house one day. I like seeing them, and we do from time to time. I can always tell by the sound of them if it is a helicopter or an airplane. I think they are pretty neat.
I’ve only had one ride on a helicopter before, a long time ago. It was probably back in 1972 or 1973, when I was back in the country coming from our living in Germany. We landed at one airport in NYC and had to be transferred to the other one for our next flight back to Texas. One was La Guardia and the other was JFK. We got to see a few sights on the short trip, like the Statue of Liberty, and all the tall buildings.
I don’t know if they still shuttle people by helicopter these days, but I was glad I got to ride in the helicopter that day.
Here’s a couple of things from my scrapbook:
The ticket from my helicopter ride between airports, and a postcard picture of the helicopter “New York Airways”.

That is really neat! I don’t think they helicopter people anymore, I actually have never heard of that, so thank you for sharing. Great memories!
Thanks, Christine! It was pretty interesting to do that. If they don’t do that any more, then I’m glad I got to go when it was still commonplace at the time. 🙂
That sounds like a smart way to travel where streets are crowded. I’ve been in a helicopter – not a fan. 😆
Thanks, Laura! I guess they figured out it was quicker than dealing with traffic on the road between airports. If they don’t do this any more, I wonder why not. This was a pretty big helicopter, and it might be different on a small one. 🙂
Cool! I’ve never been in a helicopter before, and can’t say I want to, but it does look fun…
Thanks, Emily! I’m glad I had the experience that time. Never had another occasion to be in a helicopter, but it was fun. 🙂
I never had a trip to New York where I needed to transfer between LGA and JFK (or Newark), but if I did, I’d be all over the chopper…
Thanks, John! I have no idea why I had to change airports, but who knows back in ’73. I’m surprised I even found my way around! I’m glad I got to ride in the helicopter though, as I never had another chance to do that later on. 🙂
Nice. We get helicopters flying over quite often since we live so close to both the airport and a major freeway (traffic copters). I like to see the big Army ones come in once in a while. We actually took a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas one year. It was great fun. Nice use of the prompt!
Thanks, Janet! It was an experience I’m glad I had, riding in a helicopter. It was a pretty large one, so I don’t know what a smaller one would be like. Glad you got to go up in one, and what a beautiful reason to be doing that at the Grand Canyon. We see the occasional one here, but when we lived on the Army bases they were just an every day thing to see them all the time. 🙂
“I don’t know if they still shuttle people by helicopter these days” — Uber actually has a helicopter service in New York! It looks amazing and I want to do it very much.
Thanks, Steven! Oh, now that seems strange to me. Hope the Uber people know how to fly the helicopter. Still, it would save time and beat traffic if you could afford it. 🙂
Wow! I’d love to ride in a helicopter! 😀
Thanks, Carol Anne! I’m glad I got to go that time up in a helicopter. It’s quite a bit different from a big jet plane, but you can see the sights really good. 🙂
