“All Day and All of the Night”, by the Kinks, was released as a single from their album, “Kinks-Size” in 1964. It was written by Ray Davies, and is on the Pye and Reprise labels.

From the Songfacts article: https://www.songfacts.com/facts/the-kinks/all-day-and-all-of-the-night

During a July 12, 2006 concert at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Ray Davies explained how the song was originally rejected by his record company because it was “too blue-collar, too working-class” and because the record execs thought the guitar sounded like a dog’s bark.

I’m not content to be with you in the daytime
Girl, I want to be with you all of the time
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl, I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night
I believe that you and me last forever
Oh yeah, all day and nighttime yours, leave me never
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl, I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night
Oh, come on
I believe that you and me last forever
Oh yeah, all day and nighttime yours, leave me never
The only time I feel alright is by your side
Girl, I want to be with you all of the time
All day and all of the night
All day and all of the night-time
All day and all of the night

Now for another contrast!

This is the same song as a cover, done by The Scorpions.

This video is of course in color, but the whole thing is jazzed up with the lights and the energy displayed by the band.

In the original video of the Kinks, there are no flashing lights, no color, and really not much excitement of them singing the song. It is very plain and they barely move around the stage.

I much prefer the Scorpions!

    • Thanks, Jill! I’d never seen either video before, but there sure was a difference in them. Of course back in 1964 they didn’t have all the equipment and all like they do these days. Glad you like this one today! 🙂 🎵

      • Yes! I went to the 1964 Beatles concert at the Cow Palace In San Francisco. *yes, I am dating myself*. My first concert before I went to Fillmore West and Winterland concerts to see The Animals, Hendrix, Santana. Petty, Fleetwood Mac and more, and many others. Look those up! Elvis in the 50s has them on reel. So much fun to watch and better to remember them by being there. 🙂 Check out the Ed Sullivan show reels too. He had everyone on. 🙂

      • Wow! You’ve seen many of the greats! It is always fun to go to a concert to see and hear our favorites in person. Yes, I remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan! 🙂

  1. Great choice! There’s something really raw and immediate with The Kinks’ performance, maybe because there was little or no technology. And they weren’t lip-syncing or acting like they were playing, they were really singing and really playing. I like that!

    • Thanks, John! We’ve sure come a long way in how we view music. Happy to have those old clips from either a live performance or a TV performance back then. We knew for sure they weren’t just putting on an act. 🙂
