Mystery Noise
***
For the past few weeks we’ve been hearing strange noises.
It sounds like it’s someone walking around or bumping the ceiling when we are out in the garage.
I hear it early in the mornings when it’s still dark outside, and also during the day, and at night.
I just hear it out there, not when we are in the house, just the garage.
It might be up in the attic, or even on the roof, but I don’t know.
Could it be birds on the roof? I’m thinking no, because the birds we have around here are not large, and wouldn’t weigh enough to make a sound with their feet. They aren’t active at night anyway.
Could it be cats on the roof. Possible, but the outside cats we have now are just not that energetic to climb on the roof and I’ve never seen them up there. We have had cats that did, in the past though.
It couldn’t be squirrels, or raccoons, because we don’t have those around here either.
Once I thought it might be the wind blowing the shingles on the roof, but I’ve looked outside when I hear the noise, and the wind isn’t blowing at all.
This might be strange, but I think it’s our ghost, or another one has come to pay a visit. There are no other noises, though … just the thumping sound.
Here’s the opening to our attic that is out there. There is nothing at all stored up there, and we never go up there.

Thanks, Sadje!
It is, since we’ve just recently started hearing the noise. Probably some simple explanation. 🙂

Hope you find what or who is making them.

Thanks, I hope so too. ❤

I guess you’ll have to satisfy your curiosity and take a peek up there just to make sure it’s not a raccoon. But still, an attic in the summertime, surely an animal wouldn’t be interested in that!

Thanks, Priscilla!
I’m not sure how we’d even get up there, as the opening is over our washer & dryer and no place to put a ladder. Well, next week are supposed to have roofers putting a new roof on here, so they will be making lots of noise. Maybe that will drive away whatever the mystery noise is. 🙂

That could get annoying.

It sure could be if it was constant and we heard it inside the house. So far it’s just occasionally out in the garage which is connected to the house. 🙂

I hear noises too. I’m not sure if it is birds (wood pigeons) on the roof or rats in the loft. But maybe we share your ghost?

Thanks, Pete! I do hear the doves when they are on the roof with their cooing, but they sure couldn’t make the loud thumping noise. I’ve had strange things happen here before, so guess I’ll just wait and see if something else happens. 🙂

It could be mice in your roof space. We had them in the cottage and they had gotten in via the ivy which was growing up the back wall so we pulled it out. We put some sonar mouse deterrents in our three roof spaces, and that was that. Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Thanks, Di! Sounds like you found a solution that worked for getting mice away. I haven’t seen mice in years around here. I don’t think they could make this loud thumping noise. Maybe we’ll find out, or it will stop on it’s own one of these days. 🙂

I think so, too, or at least that’s what I want to think. haha 👻

An animal?

Thanks, Kathleen! I’ve thought about it being that, but can’t imagine what kind, as we’ve never seen any signs of rats or bats, and we don’t have squirrels or raccoons here. That attic space is unfinished, and gets probably over a hundred degrees every day. The noise is always in the same place up there. Who knows, but if I ever find out, I’ll post about it. 🙂 👻

Thanks, Sa! The more I hear it and the more I think about it, it just gets stranger. The noise is always in the same place, too. Not like an animal running around … just thump thump thump! 👻

Spooky indeed, Barbara. I can relate. Since I moved into this little house a year ago, I hear all sorts of odd noises, coming from all over the place. Even so, it’s better than the other kinds of overwhelming noises I heard constantly back in DC. Wishing you peace and quiet. Hugs on the wing!

Houses do have strange noises sometimes, and you learn to know what they are. I don’t know the history of your house, and who knows what kind of impressions it holds from anyone else that ever lived there. For ours here, we’re the only 2nd family to live here, and we met the previous owners – nice people. But, as I’ve said before, I’ve had dealings with ghosts my whole life, so this may just be another way of attention getting.
Sounds nice to be away from the big city noises for you! Continued peace & keep safe in these uncertain times. ❤ 👻

Glad you like our ‘spooky attic’! I’ve never been up there, and there is nothing stored up there. Who knows what strange thing is making the thumping noise! 🙂 👻

Gotta be an animal but I must admit we thot we had a ghost here as well as the older lady who lived here previously had passed on. One night the screen door slammed open…open. No wind.

Thanks, Virginia! I love hearing about strange things that happens. Sounds like a ghost, maybe of the woman who used to live there in your house. I’ve had a lot of unusual things happen, but to me it’s just interesting and not scary. 🙂
