There are lots of songs with the words to the prompt in the lyrics or titles. I remembered this one last night, and then this morning I found someone else had chosen it also. Oh well, I figure we all have different readers of our blogs, and since I already had this one ready to go, I wanted to post it anyway. It’s a good old song.

I really don’t like just copying the text from the Wiki or Song Facts articles, so here are a couple of links in case you want to read more about this song.

I did read that this song was intended for the B side of the record, but ended up beingย  # 1 hit for the group.

“Black Water”, by the Doobie Brothers, can be found on their album, “What was once Vices are Now Habits”, from 1973. It was written by Patrick Simmons, and is on the Warner Bros. label.

Well, I built me a raft and she’s ready for floating
Old Mississippi, she’s calling my name
Catfish are jumping, that paddle wheel thumping
Black water keeps rolling on past just the same

[Hook]
Old black water, keep on rolling
Mississippi moon, won’t you keep on shining on me?
Old black water, keep on rolling
Mississippi moon, won’t you keep on shining on me?
Old black water, keep on rolling

Mississippi moon, won’t you keep on shining on me?
Yeah, keep on shining your light
Gonna make everything, pretty mama
Gonna make everything alright
And I ain’t got no worries cause I ain’t in no hurry at all

Well, if it rains, I don’t care!
Don’t make no difference to me
Just take that street car that’s going up town
Yeah, I’d like to hear some funky Dixieland
And dance a honky tonk
And I’ll be buying everybody drinks all round

[Hook]
Old black water, keep on rolling
Mississippi moon, won’t you keep on shining on me?
Old black water, keep on rolling
Mississippi moon, won’t you keep on shining on me?
Old black water, keep on rolling
Mississippi moon, won’t you keep on shining on me?
Keep on shining your light
Gonna make everything, pretty mama
Gonna make everything alright
And I ain’t got no worries cause I ain’t in no hurry at all

Pretty mama, come and take me by the hand
Take me by the hand, pretty mama
Come and dance with your daddy all night long

I’d like to hear some funky Dixieland
Pretty mama, come and take me by the hand
Take me by the hand, pretty mama
Come and dance with your daddy all night long

I’d like to hear some funky Dixieland
Pretty mama, come and take me by the hand
Take me by the hand, pretty mama
Come and dance with your daddy all night long

I’d like to hear some funky Dixieland
Pretty mama, come and take me by the hand
Take me by the hand, pretty mama
Come and dance with your daddy all night long

I’d like to hear some funky Dixieland
Pretty mama, come and take me by the hand
Take me by the hand, pretty mama
Come and dance with your daddy all night long

I’d like to hear some funky Dixieland
Pretty mama, come and take me by the hand

  1. I’m meh on this song, but even meh Doobies music is pretty good.

Fun Doobies fact. They had two #1 songs (This one and “What A Fool Believes”). Neither of them were sung by their primary lead singer Tom Johnston, who voiced most of their hits!

    • Thanks, Bill!
For some reason I can’t even remember any of their songs right off. I thought of this one, then had to look up who was singing it. Interesting fact about who was and wasn’t singing. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks, Jim! Glad you like this one. I have no idea if they still have those kind of boats now, even if a tourist attraction, but it would be fun, I think. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thanks so much, Felicia! Glad you did like hearing it more than once today. I thought of finding another one, but just kept coming back to this one. ๐Ÿ™‚
