Well, I tried to find a song about a burrito, but then this song has a barbecued iguana!  I remembered that I have it on CD somewhere, and it’s kind of funny.

It’s about listening to the radio, tuning in to different stations, and ending up on one that broadcasts Mexican music, etc. They guy can’t understand much of what he’s hearing, being in Spanish, but I guess he leaves it there anyway.

This reminds me of my radio listening. I like tuning in to all kinds of stations,, and have done this for as long as I can remember. You can really get some far away stations late at night and way into the very early mornings. That’s on regular radio. Then I also like listening in on some shortwave stations from time to time.

I don’t like copying a whole Wiki article, so here’s the link if you want to read more about this song. However, one funny thing was when one of the band members mother heard the song, she didn’t like it because of too many repeated lyrics.  haha! 🙂

“Mexican Radio”, by Wall of Voodoo, was released as a single from their 1983 album, “Call of the West”. It says it is written by Wall of Voodoo, but band members, Stan Ridgway and Marc Moreland actually wrote the song together. It is on the IRS Records label.

feel a hot wind on my shoulder
And the touch of a world that is older

I turn the switch and check the number
I leave it on when in bed I slumber
I hear the rhythms of the music
I buy the product and never use it
I hear the talking of the DJ
Can’t understand, just what does he say?

[Chorus]
I’m on a Mexican radio
I’m on a Mexican (whoa-oh) radio

I dial it in and tune the station
They talk about the U.S. inflation
I understand just a little
No comprende, it’s a riddle

[Chorus]
I’m on a Mexican radio
I’m on a Mexican (whoa-oh) radio
I’m on a Mexican radio
I’m on a Mexican (whoa-oh) radio

I wish I was in Tijuana
Eating barbecued iguana

I’d take requests on the telephone
I’m on a wavelength far from home

I dial it in from south of the border
I hear the talking of the DJ
Can’t understand, just what does he say?

[Chorus]
I’m on a Mexican radio
I’m on a Mexican (whoa-oh) radio
I’m on a Mexican radio
I’m on a Mexican (whoa-oh) radio

Radio, radio
Radio, radio
Radio, radio
Radio, radio

[Chorus]
I’m on a Mexican radio
I’m on a Mexican (whoa-oh) radio
I’m on a Mexican radio
I’m on a Mexican (whoa-oh) radio

Radio, radio
What does he say?
Radio, radio
Radio, radio
Radio, radio

  1. This is a classic and I always love Stan Ridgway, more of his solo career than his time with Wall of Voodoo. But “Mexican Radio” is an 80s rite of passage.
