This is a pretty good song, and I like it in either version. It doesn’t mention any of the prompt words, but I think it is implied that the guy in the song’s story is new in town. He doesn’t really know many people, so feels lonely, depressed, isolated, and restless. He isn’t really confined, as he could go out if he wanted to. 🙂

The song was written by Cooke while touring in England when staying in a hotel room where no female guests were allowed.[1] It reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was No. 1 on the R&B chart for a single week.[2] In the UK, the song peaked at No. 23 on the UK Singles Chart.[3][4]

In 1974, Cat Stevens recorded a version of the song that peaked at No. 6 on the U.S. Hot 100, No. 13 Easy Listening,[6] No. 1 in Canada twice,[7][8] on September 28 and October 19, separated by two other No. 1s, and No. 19 in Stevens’ UK homeland.[4]

“Another Saturday Night”, by Sam Cooke, was released in 1963, and is on his album, “Ain’t That Good News”. It was written by Sam Cooke, and is on the RCA Victor label.

Another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

I got in town a month ago
I’ve seen a lotta girls since then
If I could meet em I can get em, but as yet I haven’t met em
Thats how I’m in the state I’m in

Oh, another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

Another fella told me
He had a sister who looked just fine
Instead of being my deliverance, she had a strange resemblance
To a cat named Frankenstein

Another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

It’s hard on a fella
When he don’t know his way around
If I don’t find me a honey to help me spend my money
I’m gonna have to blow this town

I’ve got some money cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

Another Saturday night and I ain’t got nobody
I’ve got some money cause I just got paid
Now how I wish I had someone to talk to
I’m in an awful way

I’m in an awful way (He’s in an awful way)
I’m in an awful way, oooh, I’m in an awful way
(He’s in an awful way)

    • Thanks, Scarlett!
I was just the opposite. We have a CD with Cat Stevens singing this, so I’ve heard it a lot. I had no idea Sam Cooke wrote and sang it a long time before. 🙂

  1. Love both versions of this song. Cat Stevens makes it sound like he is living on an island somewhere and just can’t catch a break with the ladies. Poor guy! I featured Sam Cooke a few weeks ago and I think he was a brilliant songwriter. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

    • I think I do too, as his was the only one I’d heard before looking the song up today. I like them both a lot, though. It does seem the subject matter in this song is somewhat different than his usual type of songs, too. 🙂

  2. I know of the Cat Stevens’ version as it is such a classic but didn’t know the Sam Cooke version. I still like Stevens’ version. Maybe because I grew up with him.
