Golden 50th Wedding Anniversary

***

Today, December 23, 2019, is our 50th wedding anniversary.

Hard to believe it’s been that long, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

***

Remembrances of my wedding:

  • My chosen color theme was mint green
  • My Mom sewed my wedding dress (I picked the pattern, but made some changes)
  • I only had $100 to spend for the whole thing
  • My favorite flower is the chrysanthemum – I had small white ones for my bouquet
  • I wanted some champagne but wasn’t old enough to buy it, so on the actual wedding day I took my Grandma with me. My car broke down on the way, and we had to walk across a cotton field to find a phone to call for help.
  • We also had punch to drink – lime sherbet and 7UP
  • I made my own candles to use
  • My Uncle took a few Polaroid photos & my Aunt sang a song

These two charms are to commemorate our engagement and wedding. The one with wedding bells is engraved on the back with the date we got married.

This song means a lot to me, because we called it ‘Our Song’, since we met, dated, and got married. In fact, we played the song on a record player as we marched down the aisle together at our wedding. It may have seemed strange for wedding music, but it was 1969, and we did things our way. I guess we did something right, as we’ve been married 50 years. 🙂

~partial lyrics~

You know I love you, I always will
My mind’s made up by the way that I feel
There’s no beginning, there’ll be no end
‘Cause on my love you can depend

I also still have the original 45 rpm record we played at our wedding.

My daughter sent us the card on the left, and my husband gave me the card in front, and the beautiful Poinsettia plant today.

Thanks for visiting! Peace ☮️

I love that song. One of my favorites back in the day. ♥

    • Thanks so much, Sandee! I like the anniversary song from you! It’s still funny that we had ‘our song’ playing instead of the wedding march song that day. I’m glad we did. 🙂

  2. Can’t love this enough! Such a perfect couple, love you both. Thanks for sharing your sweet memories, looking forward to watching many more in the making!

    • Thanks so much, Kelly! If I had known you back then, I’d have invited you to the wedding. Glad we got to be neighbors later on, though. We sure had some fun times, and it’s always wonderful when you’re back in town. Take care and Merry Christmas to our sweet friends. ❤

  3. Such a wonderful life-affirming post, Barbara. 50th Anniversary and sharing your wonderful memories and momentos from your day. I can’t think of a more heartfelt song as a wedding day song. Congratulations on your Golden Anniversary ❤ ❤

    • Thanks so much, Di! I’m glad we did get a few photos of the wedding day. I didn’t have much time to put it together, as he was home on leave from the Army! Somehow it all worked out. 🙂

      • Wonderful memories though, love the punch! We got married on a budget, and got change out of £500, and that included our honeymoon in Amsterdam! There were only 9 of us at the registry office, and we went for a meal afterwards. I made my cake and everyone had a slice before we left. It was a brilliant day.

      • Wonderful! You did great with the budget you had for your wedding, and had enough to cover a nice meal and a honeymoon, too. I’m glad it turned out so well. Oh yes, that punch is so easy, and so good. 🙂

  4. Fabulous! Congratulations and best wishes for a continued happy and healthy union! Those are some sweet wedding pics and I could definitely trade some wedding snafus with you but as you said, it all worked out. 50 is such a milestone and something, particularly these days, to honor–we celebrated ours in 2012.

    • Thanks so much! Seems like everyone has something that goes awry with plans on the wedding day, but looking back it all turned out great. Congratulations on your milestone anniversary, also! 🙂

  5. Oh my goodness! Y’all are stunning, and you are all aglow! Wow! Happy Anniversary!
Also, 7up and lime sherbet punch is one of my favorite things ever, and my mommy made it for my baby shower 🙂

    • Thanks so much, Joey! It was a happy day, with good memories made. Soon after this, he was off to Viet Nam.
Isn’t that punch great! Haven’t had it in a long time, and it’s so easy to use for any occasion. 🙂

  6. Happy Anniversary! What a joyful day for you!

I remember those sherbet punches and pastel weddings. My cousins had nearly identical ones to yours a few years later in the mid 70s. 🙂

Now I’m dying to make myself a sherbet punch float, lol! 😀

I hope your special anniversary is lovely!

    • Thanks so much, Vanessa!
It must have been a trend back in those days, with the sherbet punch and pastels. Fun to look back. We did have a nice anniversary this year. Went to my daughter’s and even had a cheers/toast with sparkling white grape juice in flute glasses. 🙂

  7. How wonderful! May you have many more happy years together. My husband and I have reached 45 years, and yes, the time has flown. P.S. My wedding dress was mint green too!

    • Thanks so much! It’s funny to think that it’s been so many years gone by, and it really doesn’t seem like it, it went by so fast. I’m glad our day turned out so good. 🙂

  8. Congratulations, Barbara. 50 years is a long time, yes, as good as gold. It was wonderful your mom sewed your wedding dress. To have$100 to spend 50 years ago was like thousands of dollars in today’s money. What precious memories you have. 🎉💐🥂

  9. Congratulations on your Golden wedding anniversary. You have a lot of lovely memories of that day and the years since.
We celebrated our 48th in October and money went so much further back then, and we managed on so little and built up our belongings as we went. My first washing machine was secondhand twice over. Nowadays they want everything new and right now!

  10. 50 years is a LONG time! Congratulations! Your wedding photos remind me a lot of my parents’ a few years after yours since my Dad also wore his Army uniform. And they were also both too young at the time for adult beverages! Kids don’t get married that young these days…

    • Thanks so much, Bill!
Yes, a long time – what I could say is half a century! Oh my!
I do think people mostly get married at a later age these days. We may have been foolish, but we made it work for all these years. I like seeing men wearing their uniforms in photos – very distinguished. 🙂

  11. I didn’t think anyone else knew that son! I have my own copy. I love it. Congratulations on loving and living life in your own way. Your wedding sounds lovely and simple and perfect. Hugs!

    • Thanks so much, Cheryl! Same here, I figured this song was made such a long time ago, not many would have heard of it. Glad you have it and like it a lot, too. We did have nice little wedding. 🙂

    • Thanks so much, Victoria!
It was a nice, yet simple wedding. I’m glad I have a few pictures from the day.
Oh my! 40 was a long time ago – it was a good age to be, and hard to believe my girls are in their 40s now!! How did that happen? haha 🙂
