Christmas Memory # 1 – Pets & Presents
***
For the days up until Christmas I’ll be sharing some short memories of Christmases past that I remember.
***
You know if you have pets, like a cat or a dog, and it’s time for Christmas trees and presents, well there will be mishaps.
This one is when we had only dogs – a couple of Basset Hounds, a part Lab, and a part Lab/Basset. They always loved getting into things, and especially at Christmas time.
My daughters had gotten one of those Advent calendars each, and behind each little numbered door was a piece of chocolate candy. I think they’d opened one or two, but then the dogs got into the treats, tearing into the cardboard calendars and eating all the candy. They felt no ill effects from eating the chocolate – and I did kind of worry about that – but they were fine. The dogs showed no remorse whatsoever.
My girls, though, were very upset. That was the first time they’d had one of these calendars, and I can’t remember if they ever got another one after this disaster. ๐
Here’s the culprit’s pictures from better days: (sadly, they’ve all passed on now)

That’s why I vote for the beer or wine advent calendars – much less likely Elliot or Jasper will help themselves!
That’s a very good idea! I didn’t know there were ones for drinks – but yay! I’ve only seen them for candy or little toys. Your kitties can be festive some other way, I’m sure. ๐
They look totally innocent to me ๐
Hee Hee – They sure don’t look like the guilty parties in these pictures, do they. Dogs always have a way of looking sweet and innocent when they have to. ๐
I’d have probably done the same thing as the dogs! I was quite a little candy sneak…
heh heh – A candy sneak! I’ve been known to do that, too. It’s just too tempting when you know the candy is there! ๐
Cute. I think I remember when Maggie died. It’s always sad when a loved one leaves up, even pets.
Thanks so much. It is hard to say good bye to our loved pets. We are left with lots of good memories of them, though. ๐
And a more than a few good photos. ;0)
Yes we do โค
Pets can be so naughty sometimes, lol.
hee hee – they sure can, and then they look at you with those guilty eyes and we forgive them. ๐
We would always get a squeaky toy and a rawhide bone for our dog each Christmas. I guess he could smell which presents were his, because heโd pull them out from the stack of gifts under the tree and rip them open enthusiastically. We started keeping his presents up on the mantel until Christmas morning so he would have to wait until the rest of us were opening our gifts. He also loved the hazelnuts we had at Christmas time, which heโd crack open and eat.
Thanks, Candice!
How sweet to get your dog a present. We always did that, too, and I think they were excited to get something to tear into the same as we were. That reminded me – we forgot to get our ‘grand-dog & cats’ something, so went to the store today to find some treats for them. ๐
Glad I could save the little fur allโs from being disappointed!
Me too, Candice! They are just like little children and would be disappointed if they didn’t get a prize. ๐
