Scenes of Favorite Days – # 3 – Click to view Click to view Click to view

***

I don’t know why this is a favorite day, but the whole thing was unusual and I just enjoyed it, I guess.

Another super windy day with sand blowing. Middle of the afternoon – power is out – furnace is out – it’s winter time again.

I’d been sewing Barbie clothes for the girl’s dolls, and also I had been watching my favorite soap opera. It was my mom’s favorite, too, and when it ended I called her to talk about it, as it was a very suspenseful episode. Then the power went out.

I was sitting on top of the kitchen table, the house was getting cold, and I didn’t know how to re-light the furnace (it was a gas pilot light and the wind had blown it out), but it was okay – we didn’t blow up.

One other thing though, was I’d been reading some kind of spooky stories about ghosts and such. It said the spirits loved the windy dark days, too, as the static electricity in the air was conductive to their appearing. I still always think of this on these kinds of days.

***

~note~ I have no pictures of any of this today – no sand, no Barbie doll, no furnace, no table, no soap opera 🙂 – little pictures (doll, TV, & ghost) are from Free Clip Art~

CALENDAR CRAZE (calendar days)

Here’s a re-post of one of my ‘Loco Letters’. I still go through this every year…maybe you do, too? 🙂

***

LOCO LETTERS

It’s that time of year, again. The coming end of a year, when all the calendar companies come out with their new designs. I see them displayed in all the stores, from bookstores, discount stores, grocery stores, and even kiosks in the mall. Hundreds of calendars emblazoned with the numbers of the new year ahead. Here’s my loco letter to them…

~

CALENDAR CRAZE (calendar daze) DSC00357 (2)

Dear Calendar Companies,

I love your calendars. Every one of them are bright, colorful, and oh, so helpful. I mean, how else would I know what the months and days are, if not for you.

The thing is, I have a problem. You may not think it is a big problem, and for you it isn’t. You can only benefit from my dilemma. You see, I like so many of your calendars, I have a really hard time choosing one to buy. I want them all.

I only need one, yet I wind up buying quite a few. It’s because the pictures of kitty cats, puppies, horses, and scenery are so pretty. Then, as I’m trying to choose, I see the trivia ones, then the joke-a-day ones, then the cartoon ones, then the ones based on all the television shows.

All of these come in different styles, too. The regular, hang on the wall types, in all sizes, the ones you put on a desk, and the small planner ones you can carry around. There is a calendar depicting every subject, and taste the buyer might want.

How are we supposed to choose? I stand there at the display, weighing one against another. Which one has the ‘prettiest flowers’, the ‘cutest cats’, the ‘funniest’ cartoons? It is impossible, I tell you.

Remember, I only need one, but in the end, I buy several. Then, at home, I try to find places to put them all…the kitchen, the bedroom, the office, the garage, the bathroom? (because, who doesn’t need to know when the next full moon occurs, while you’re -ahem- busy in there?)

All this calendar buying, I’ll admit, is good for your company, and I do enjoy looking/reading them. I suppose one way we can have an enjoyable experience in buying lots of them, is to give them as gifts to friends and family.

Then, what do you know…we can sit back and wait to receive more calendars…the ones they bought as a gift for us!

Sincerely,

In a Daze

Here’s a calendar I got as a gift for Christmas. It is a calendar of cats that you fill in with sticker pieces like a paint by number, but with the little stickers, “Paint by Sticker Cats”. This will keep me busy all year. 🙂

This is pretty cool looking. It’s an Amaryllis bulb that has green sprouts on the top of the brown bulb. I guess it is a starter kit for growing the pretty white flower.

Midnight on a very snowy New Year’s Eve.

We’re walking home (basically across the street) from our neighbor’s house. We’d been over there for food and games of dominoes. We live right by a playa lake, where the Canada geese come to stay for the winter. As we walked home, crunching through the snow and ice, a big flock of geese flew over for a landing in the lake.

They were honking as they always do, but in the silence of the snowy night, it was a wonderful sound. Houses around the neighborhood still had Christmas lights up on their houses.

It was beautiful, and I’ll always remember how peaceful it felt.

These tiny flowers are pink and purple petals in a tiny carved soapstone vase. The vase was my mom’s, but I don’t know where it came from. The little branch of flowers was from a bush somewhere in the neighborhood.

As they drove back to the motel, Linda could tell that Stevie and Mandy were needing a nap. They could hardly keep their eyes open. Steve was staring out the window, lost in a fog of mental pain. She, herself, was exhausted. She couldn’t help the thoughts that came to her.

She gave in to them for a few minutes…What have I gotten us into…uprooting the kids and moving across the country, leaving all we know…going into the unknown and unfamiliar … are Steve and Ghost always in so much drama?…Where are we going to live, where will I find a job… Her mind was in turmoil over it all, going around and around. Then, there was the traveling, and they still had so far to go. Ghost’s health was in jeopardy, too, now, and it was getting to be too much for her. She felt her eyes sting, as tears began to fall. She wiped them away, before Steve could see, at least she hoped he didn’t see her crying. He didn’t need her self-pity on his shoulders, too. Taking a deep, shuddery breath, she said to herself, “I will be strong. I will see this through.”

She pulled the van into the motel parking lot, and switched off the engine. They just sat there a minute. “Mommy, are we home?” Mandy asked, still half-asleep.

“No, sweetie, we’re back at the motel. We’re going in so you and Stevie can take your naps,” she said. Getting out, she helped unbuckle the kids from their car seats. In the room, she helped them get into comfortable sleep clothes, and tucked them in, kissing their foreheads.

“Y’all try to sleep for a little bit,” she said. “Here’s your doll, Mandy. Your uncle Steve and I will be right outside, talking.”

“Okay, Mommy,” Mandy said. Stevie was already asleep.

Steve closed the door, as he and Linda went out. “Okay…I’ve had my pity party, Steve…now, we get busy,” Linda said. “Here’s my thoughts…see what you think,” She cleared her throat, before speaking again. “You go to the office and tell them what’s going on. Pay for the damages to the room…whatever they ask for.” Steve nodded.

“Next, you have to go get your things from the room, and bring them over here.”

“Yeah, I can do that,” Steve said. He headed off to see the motel manager.

Linda checked on the kids, then freshened up a little. Running a brush through her hair, and splashing cold water on her face, helped revive her. Back outside, she met up with Steve, again.

“That’s done,” Steve said. “Now, the room…um…it’s gonna be hard to go in there, Linda…to see…well, you know.”

“I know, but you have to…I have to stay with the kids,” Linda said. “You just try not to think about what happened earlier.”

Steve nodded, as he tried to steel himself for opening the other room’s door. He closed his eyes, as he opened it…immediately the stale air in the room engulfed him. He could see it all happening again. He went in, but left the door open. His eyes were drawn to the bathroom…this is where it happened…oh, God…Ghost’s blood on the floor…shattered glass… A quick look only…there was none of their things in there. He hurried to gather up the few things they’d brought in, from the main room, then left, shutting the door behind him.

He didn’t say a word, as he passed by Linda. He just went into her room and dropped everything on the floor, against the wall. He came back outside…he was breathing hard, and shaking all over. “That’s all,” he said.

“I know that was a hard thing to do, but you did it,” Linda said.  She wanted to hug him, he looked so sad, but she knew if she did, he would probably break down completely.

“Now what?” he asked.

“Well, it’s still a long time until seven o’clock. Maybe we should try to rest, too. I’m going to call Lisa, and tell her what has happened, then I’ll lay down with the kids for awhile,” Linda said. “Maybe you should call Kinsey to let him know what’s going on. Then, come rest on the little bed, okay?”

“Yeah, I better call Kinsey,” Steve said. He took out his phone. They both made their calls.

~

Linda dialed her sister’s number. “Hey, Sis, it’s me. We’re stopped a few days, here in Arizona. We were about to get into New Mexico, but Ghost had a bad spell, and is in the hospital.”

“Oh, no…will he be all right?” Lisa asked.

“Yeah, I think so. They’ll release him maybe tomorrow. I’m hanging in there. I’m tired…the kids are good. No complaints from either of them.”

“Good, good, but I can tell by your voice, something’s bothering you,” Lisa said.

Sighing, Linda said, “Just the stress, I guess, Lisa. The uncertainty of it all…second guessing…you know how it is. We’re fine, but we’ll be glad when we get to Missing Mile and can settle down somewhere.”

“I’ll try not to worry then, sister. You keep calling me, though, even if just to say hi, okay?” Lisa said.

“I will,” Linda said. “Love you.”

“Love you, too,” Lisa said. They ended their call. Linda went inside to rest, with the kids.

~

Steve had gone over to a little grassy area by the motel pool. Sitting at a picnic table, he made his call to Kinsey.  “Hey, Kinsey,” he began, when the phone was answered.

“Hey, there Steve. Good to hear from you,” Kinsey said. “Where are y’all? How’s it going?” he asked.

“Oh, we’re still in Arizona, but right near the border to New Mexico. We’re gonna be here a little longer than we thought…” Steve trailed off.

“How come?” Kinsey asked.

Steve hesitated a second. “Uh…Kinsey…it’s Ghost…he’s in the hospital here…”

“Oh, no…what happened?”

“He had a…seizure…a bad one, Kinsey…and somehow fell into a mirror and got cut. He had to have a few stitches, but they’ll be okay…it’s…well, they’re keeping him some more, because he was out of it for so long. They’re making sure he’s over it, ya know, got some more meds, and all.” Steve stopped a few seconds, then blurted out, “Shit, Kinsey…I only seen him once this morning, and can’t go back until tonight…and nobody’s telling me anything.” He tried to stifle a sob. “…and he’s not okay, Kinsey…” he said, his voice catching. “He’s just not, and…he said he thinks I hate him. And, the EMTs kept saying it was a suicide attempt, when he broke the mirror…and now I don’t know what to think…or do…or say,” he cried.

“Steve…get ahold of yourself,” Kinsey said. “Did he say anything else…did he say why?”

“No, that’s all, and they made me leave in a hurry. I don’t know what’s going on and I get no information at all. What should I do, Kinsey? I mean, when I see Ghost again. Just ask him straight out? What if he won’t even want to see me no more?”

“I don’t get what’s going on, but it doesn’t sound good, Steve,” Kinsey said. He thought for a minute. “What do you think? Did it look accidental? You weren’t there when it happened?”

“No, I was over in Linda’s room, or car, or whatever…waiting for him to come out. Then he didn’t, so we go in and he’s…Oh, God…laying there on the floor, in the glass, and bleeding, and totally passed out. Then they came and took him…and Kinsey? I’m scared to say it, but there wasn’t no way he fell onto the mirror…it was bolted down.”

“Oh, Jesus, Steve…” Kinsey said. They were silent then, for a minute. “What’s Linda’s take on all this?”

“I don’t know, she didn’t really say. She’s so tired and all, and the kids…she’s taking a nap right now…she just keeps talking about getting back on the road again.”

“Hmm, well, Steve…y’all just go up there tonight and demand some answers from those doctors. And, I guess see if Ghost has come around to normal now. Sounds like just the after-business of the seizure, and the trauma of getting hurt, and medicines…I’m sure he didn’t mean that what he said…there’s no way, you know,” Kinsey said.

“I know, Kinsey, but I’m so worried.”

“I know, Steve, but you have to handle it, you and Linda both. And as soon as possible, get Ghost back home,” Kinsey said. “Let me know how it goes.”

“Okay, I will,” Steve said. They hung up their phones. Steve rubbed his face, and prayed Ghost would be better tonight.

Sand stormy day (brown sky, part of a house and fence)

Scenes of Favorite Days # 1

***

Do you have memories of favorite kinds of days? Mine usually involve some type of weather, for some reason.

Here’s the first one:

***

Chilly, super windy day with the sand blowing, turning the sky brown. Usually happens in winter time or early spring time.

I have a pile of new books from the library around me on the bed. I’m covered up with a snuggly home-made quilt.

I have a Charms candy sucker – usually lemon-lime flavor

The bedroom window is open a crack, because I feel claustrophobic if the room is totally enclosed.

The wind is knocking things around outside, and as it whooshes through the open window it makes a mournful whistling sound.

I have my old fashioned, gold-toned goose neck lamp up on the bed’s headboard. It’s turned on, as it is a gloomy kind of day.

Everyone else in the house is quiet, also probably reading.

My choice of book this day is a science fiction novel (I can’t remember the name of it, but it was engrossing)

I am maybe in my early teens.

I still have that lamp as you can see from this photo.

From the Wiki article:

Crazy Arms” is an American country song which was a career-making hit for Ray Price. The song, released in May 1956, went on to become a number 1 country hit that year, establishing Price’s sound, and redefining honky-tonk music. It was Price’s first No. 1 hit.

***

“Crazy Arms”, by Ray Price was released as a single in 1956. It was written by Ralph Mooney and Charles Seals, and is on the Columbia label.

However … there was a controversy mentioned in the Wiki article that said another songwriter, Paul Gilley, actually wrote the song, but sold the lyrics to Ralph Mooney, who then took credit for them.

Some notables that have covered this song are:

Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Jerry Garcia Band, Jerry Lee Lewis, Marie Osmond, and Chris Isaak among many others.

Now blue ain't the word for the way that I feel
And the storm's brewing in this heart of mine
This ain't no crazy dream I know that it's real
You're someone else's love now you're not mine

Crazy arms that reach to hold somebody new
While my yearning heart keeps saying you're not mine
My troubled mind knows soon to another you'll be wed
And that's why I'm lonely all the time

So please take the treasured dreams I have for you and me
And take all the love I thought was mine
Someday my crazy arms may hold somebody new
But now I'm so lonely all the time

Crazy arms that reach to hold somebody new
While my yearning heart keeps saying you're not mine
My troubled mind knows soon to another you'll be wed
And that's why I'm lonely all the time

The questions:

Do dogs ‘talk’ (communicate) with their own species?

Sure they do. I know when listening to the dogs in the neighborhood, one will start ‘barking/saying’ something, and others will chime in with their own thoughts about what’s happening. They communicate with us, too. Be still and quiet, open your mind to whatever message you get when you are with your dog (or cat). It’s strange, but true.

Have you ever had to work on Christmas Day?

No, I never had to work on Christmas Day, except here at home.

If someone gifts you something that you immediately loathe, do you pretend to really like it anyway or are you brutally honest about your opinion?

I thank the person for the gift. Why would you want to hurt someone’s feelings by disparaging a gift given with good intentions.

Which popular drink, found during the Christmas season most often, is called “milk punch?”

I’d say it is eggnog because it’s made with milk. I’ve read some others that say there is a difference, though.

How many ghosts show up during “A Christmas Carol?”

I always thought there were three – past/present/future, but some say there were four. I never read that book, but I might have seen the movie long ago.

Are you all about the holly and jolly or more about remembering the alleged ‘true’ meaning of Christmas?

I’d say I’m a little of both. I do like the fun and the decorations and gifts, but also remember why we are celebrating according to some religious traditions.

Please share a memory or thought about the holiday season if you’d like, whatever kind of celebration you may observe.

Since I’ve already wrote quite a few Christmas Memory posts, which you can find elsewhere on here, and since it is past Christmas, I hope your holiday season was and is a good one.

Happy New Year! 🙂
