Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Clean/Dirty Chicken

Stream of Consciousness Saturday – Clean/Dirty Chicken

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS July 27/19

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “clean/dirty.” Use one, use both, use ’em any way you like. Enjoy!

Today, Linda has asked us to write something about clean/dirty. Thanks, Linda! 🙂

First thing that came to mind for me was my dishwasher magnet. It’s a wooden chicken. It is a white chicken (red comb/yellow beak) with a blue shawl. Dangling on a chain below is a blue heart. One side of the heart says clean, the other side says dirty.

It’s supposed to indicate if the dishes in the dishwasher have been cleaned already, or not.

I don’t know if I’ve ever used it for that. I just think it’s a cute magnet on my refrigerator. In fact, we don’t even use a dishwasher. We’ve had them, and one is still in place, but it quit working years ago. Even when it was working, it didn’t work very well.

The dishes that were supposed to be cleaned just weren’t clean, so I’d have to do them over anyway. What’s the time saver here? None at all.

I don’t mind washing dishes by hand, and have done so most of the time. It’s the one household job/chore that I do like. I like the hot water, the soap bubbles, and the fun little scrubbies you can use, too.

Even when I was a kid, I’d ask to do the dishes at home, and when we ate at someone else’s house I’d do their dishes, too.  I just like doing dishes. I’d rather do a thousand dishes than do one tiny thing with the floors. I hate doing floors. Give me some dishes to wash, and I’ll get them clean every time. 🙂

  1. Cute magnet. We have a dishwasher and for the most part we can tell if the dishes are clean or dirty by whether the door is locked or not. If the door is locked, they are clean and if you take a dish out you either have to empty the whole thing or make sure to lock it again. It has worked (with a few exceptions) for the last 23 years! Of course those times it doesn’t I always say “I’m gonna get a magnet that says clean or dirty!” Happy Saturday.

    • That’s a good way to know if the dishes have been cleaned or not. I’d forgotten about the locked door. For just us two here, we don’t have that many dishes to wash anyway, and it would take awhile to fill up a dishwasher. Just easier to do them in the sink around here. 🙂

  2. Dishwashers have a tendency to not work well after a while. If you do plan on selling your house in the future, it’d probably be a good idea to get a new one. Some real estate agents like to run the dishwasher to demonstrate that it actually works. (I know ours did.) And hey, if you like doing the dishes, more power to you.

    • Good idea with that of replacing it if we ever sell. No plans like that for now, though. We went through several of them and they all quit working good, so we said no more for us. Yep, good that I like doing the dishes! 🙂

  3. Aw, such a cute chicken. I’d keep it too! Did you see Laura talked about dishes today too – and a magnet that the family forgets to flip?! Dishes – I’m like you, I like to wash them. But the dishwasher is Mr.’s favorite thing to use. I don’t complain!

    • Thanks, Jill!
Same here. I hear of a lot of people that just hate doing dishes, but I do like it. Maybe they like doing floors. I’d trade if I could. 🙂

  4. My mother had one with a bird/birhouse when I was a kid. We used it and it was effective. I’ve never had one — load it up every night and unload it every morning, like clockwork, cause big family. My mother and I both handwash everything now.

    • Thanks, Joey!
Dishwashers (when they work) can be a big help when there’s a big family and lots of dishes to do. I’m glad ours was working when the girls were here. 🙂

  5. I’ve never used a dishwasher before. We didn’t have one growing up, and there isn’t one (or a ready place for one) in my house. Being by myself, I’ve got in the habit a few years ago of just using the same few dishes/bowls/cups over and over… washing them as soon as I was finished with them. No more sink full of dirty dishes that makes you want to avoid having to wash them!

    • Thanks, Bill!
We do the same thing as to using the same dishes all the time. We have our favorite cups, and certain bowls for certain foods. We didn’t have any modern conveniences like this when I was a kid either. As soon as my sister and I moved out is when they got a dishwasher, haha!
We’re basically using paper plates these days anyway. Much easier. 🙂

    • Thanks, Sadje! I love cute magnets, and keep thinking I’ll do a few posts about the ones I have. I never thought about how much water is used by a dishwasher or hand washing them. I did like that the dishwasher put all the hot steam on them. Seems like it helps sanitize them. 🙂
