There are so many great songs with this group of subjects, that I couldn’t pick just one. So, I’ve chosen two of my favorites.

The first one seems to be speaking of being able to read another person’s mind, being a ghost, and also about the ghosts of a lost relationship and why it went wrong.

“If You Could Read My Mind”, by Gordon Lightfoot, was released in 1970 from his album, “Sit Down Young Stranger”.

It was written by Gordon Lightfoot, and is on the Reprise label.

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
‘Bout a ghost from a wishin’ well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I’m a ghost that you can’t see
If I could read your mind love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind that drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won’t read that book again
Because the ending’s just too hard to take I’d walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let’s be real
* I never thought I could act this way *
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feelin’s gone
And I just can’t get it back If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
‘Bout a ghost from a wishin’ well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You’ll know that I’m just tryin’ to understand
The feelin’s that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I’ve got to say that I just don’t get it
I don’t know where we went wrong
But the feelin’s gone
And I just can’t get it back

This second song, I believe is talking about being reincarnated into different eras in history. Could be the same soul in all of them, and how they died, but also their soul lives on, coming back again and again.

“The Highwayman”, by a collaboration of these four singers – Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristopherson. (The Highwaymen).  It was released in 1985, from their album, “The Highwayman” was written by Jimmy Webb, and is on the Columbia label.

Verse 1: Willie Nelson]
I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive

[Verse 2: Kris Kristofferson]
I was a sailor
I was born upon the tide
And with the sea I did abide
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still

[Verse 3: Waylon Jennings]
I was a dam builder across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado

I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around, I’ll always be around and around and around and
Around and around

I fly a star-ship across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I’ll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
And I’ll be back

  1. Barbara, two excellent choices for the prompts! You picked two of my favorite singer-songwriters of all time: Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash. I forgot about that Highwaymen song. What a great assemblage of singers and love the way they cover reincarnation in the song.

  2. ❤ Gordon Lightfoot!!! I can listen to him on a loop and sometimes do.

I had never heard the 2nd one. Thanks for the introduction. I enjoyed it very much.
