Sabi Saturday is open for a whole week where we share:

  • the vintage/antique items handed down or we “rescue” from garage sales and thrift stores so they don’t end up in a trash bin
  • items we’ve upcycled instead of throwing them away
  • items we’ve repaired in a transformative way to make them more beautiful or cooler than before
  • process or tutorials on how we upcycled or repaired something to make something new, more beautiful, or cooler
  • the main idea is showing how we treasure or reuse or creatively transform things that have some history to them, may be a bit worn but nevertheless are still useful/beautiful and often have character.

Here’s a couple of photos of my old desk.

My parents bought me this desk when I was in elementary school. I used it for all kinds of projects, plus doing my homework on, all the way through high school

It’s brown wood, with a flat top. The front part is slanted and has a little knob. When you pull it down, it forms a flat desk space. Behind this are three middle shelves, and on either side of these are larger open spaces.

Then there is a fairly large open space to put things, and below that is another shelf, that has sliding doors in front.

After I married and moved away, my mom kept this desk and used it as a painting supplies cabinet/desk. She did lots of oil paintings, and this desk helped her organize things.

Many years later, I got the desk back, and it is now in our spare bedroom. I use it all the time, as a craft desk/table. I have all kinds of art supplies in the shelves. It’s kind of messy, but I can find what I need to work on. The flat top makes a good staging area for a lot of my photos now, too.

I’m so glad I still have my old desk. I’ve had it since the 1950s.

  1. That’s wonderful! I never had a desk when I was a kid, always wanted my grandmother’s desk — and now I have it. I did my work and projects at our dining table, which is also in my house now. All my kids have had desks and prefer(ed) to work at that dining table! Go figure!
