X-TRA SPECIAL X

The letter X is such a versatile letter. You see it in all areas of writing. I think it doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. If you look in the dictionary, the words listed for the letter x seems to be one of the shortest entries. Most of the words are hard to pronounce, and the meanings are a bit technical. In the real world, using the letter x is very common. It takes the place of putting ‘ex’ in a word. It serves to shorten it, and make it stand out. Some examples in advertising would be…X-treme, X-tra, X-terior, and X-ams. The x is usually a big, capital one, to draw attention.

One of the earliest uses of the letter x, was found in the Middle Ages. People would sign an X for their signature. The X is a form used for the cross, in Christian religion. Sometimes, people would sign a document with the letter X, then kiss it, showing they were sincere, their faith, and honesty.

Some other examples of the use of the letter X, are in games, such as tic-tac-toe, in math, as an unknown number, in treasure maps, as in X marks the spot you can find the prize, and in cartoons, as depicting a dead person.

Xeriscaping, is a word that is used in lawn care. If you xeriscape, you are using drought tolerant plants and grasses in your yard. We have a lot of that here where we live, where we are in a severe drought most of the time.

Xenophobia, is the unreasonable fear of strangers, foreigners, or customs. I wonder if people have that about me, as my name means strange and foreign, from a foreign land! I hope not!

Other times you see the letter x used, is in sizes, such as X, XX, XXX, meaning extra large, 2X, or 3X. Three XXX can also indicate something is poison when it is on a bottle of something. Movies use X-rated, to let people know it includes adult content. Sports such as football use the letter x to map out strategies on the playing field.

As you can see, the letter X is used in many ways. It is not only the scary letter that begins those words in the dictionary. Well, unless you think about how sometimes the letter X at the start of a word is sometimes pronounced like the letter Z! I’m not sure who deciced on that!

Flower of the Day – Yellow with a Beetle

***

I saw this yellow flower at my aunt’s house the other day. It’s probably a flowering weed, but still pretty. When looking closer, I saw this little bug or beetle on the stem. It is black with four orange spots on it’s back. I doesn’t look exactly like a ladybug, but similar. It’s not rounded, though. I tried to find what kind of bug it was, but got several suggestion pictures, none were exactly like I was looking for. Some were called Sexton Beetles, Cylinder Leaf Beetle, and Sap Beetles, and Harlequin Beetles. I still don’t know what it is.

To see it closer, you can click the photo.

The Friday Reminder and Prompt for #SoCS April 27/19

***

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “xp.” Use it as a word, or find a word with “xp”in it. As always, use any way you’d like. Enjoy!

Today for SOCS, we have the letters ‘xp’ to explore. We can write whatever we think of using these letters, or words that have the letters in them.

I want to thank Linda G. Hill, for continually motivating us to stretch our imagination by suggesting all kinds of interesting prompts.

Do you like to explore? I do. There’s all kinds of ways to go exploring, such as taking trips to interesting places, taking hikes, or even exploring caves.

For me, I’ve not done much of those, but I do like exploring locally. I go exploring most every Friday and weekend in the summer time…I go to yard sales. It’s fun to explore all the things people put out for sale in their front yards.

In the past, I’ve enjoyed exploring the new towns we’d moved to, by driving around getting to know where things are, and going along new roads. Most times I’d need a map for the first few times, but eventually I learned my way around.

It’s also fun to go exploring sitting right here at home, using your computer of choice. When you are curious about something, just look it up on the internet/google to find out all about things. The more you look, the more you find, and you could end up exploring for hours.

The word explore reminds me of a song (as most everything does).

Jana Stanfield has this one called, “I’m Not Lost, I’m Exploring.”

Here’s the song, and my remembrance of meeting her.

IMG_2695

I’ve had the pleasure of attending 3 concerts of the lovely Jana Stanfield. She hails from a small NM town not far from here, and every so often schedules a musical performance here. The venues are usually small, and friendly. The ones I saw were at a church, a swimming pool outdoor area, and a private ranch/restaurant. In fact, at the restaurant, Ms Stanfield sat at our table, to chat, and had  a BBQ supper with my daughter and me before her performance. She is a great humanitarian and motivational speaker, and travels the world speaking her message.

She describes her songs/music as “Heavy Mental”,  and music with a message, as she always has a positive message to deliver, with humor. I find that is so true. She is booked as a keynote speaker all around the world, where she is also an advocate for humanitarian and peace endeavors. If you ever get a chance to attend one of her concerts, you won’t be disappointed.

WAITING AND WRITING

I don’t know about you, but I’m not fond of waiting. Seems like everywhere you go, you have to wait in a line, wait in a room, wait to be seated at a restaurant, wait on the waitperson to take your order, wait on your food to come to the table, wait at stop signs and red lights, wait for your flight at the airport…waiting…ugh! Waiting is boring. When you have to wait at the doctor’s office, way past the time of your appointment, it is one of the worst. Would you agree?

So, when I know I’ll be in a place of waiting, I bring along something to occupy my mind and time. I always have a pen and paper to write on. I look around at my surroundings, at all the other waiting people, and write about what I see. This, then, is what I wrote, on December 9, 2014, while…you guessed it…waiting.

So, waiting at the eye doctor appointment with my husband. It is his appointment, and he likes to get to places early, in case we can get in earlier than anticipated. Sometimes it works out, sometimes not. This is one time it did not. We’ve been here forever it seems. The appointment was at 11:30, but we got here about 10:30 or so, and now it is ten minutes after 12 noon. He just now got into the other room…to wait some more, I’m sure. We were already tired and bored.

I did get the nose pad of my glasses changed, at no charge. It took only a couple of minutes, though. I wandered around looking at all the glasses frames to buy. I sat back down and checked my phone for messages on Facebook, Twitter, and Email. I brought my Kindle, too, in case I wanted to read something. We’d looked through a National Geographic magazine catalog, of things to buy from them…all very expensive items, but interesting. That took up maybe five minutes.

The waiting room was full of people, when we got there, then it kind of cleared out. Then it filled up again. Now, there only a few people left waiting. They all look as bored as I am. They are checking their phones, and reading magazines, too. I’m sure they are wishing they could get on with their appointment and get out of here…because it is so boring!

The place is nice in here, though. Good furniture to sit in, not just some hard plastic chairs. There are a few comfy chairs and a plush, leather (or fake leather?) couch. There are pretty flower arrangements on the glassed top tables, and at this time of year, a few Christmas decorations. I go over to see the ornaments they’ve arranged on the tree. There is a TV in one corner, up high, tuned to the game show Jeopardy, but the sound is turned down really low, so you can only hear it if you are sitting right by it…which we are not.

I did go out to the truck for a few minutes. I’d brought a glass of iced tea, so I wanted to get a drink, and just get some outside air. It is a nice day – not hot, not cold – a little damp feeling, though. I see some fire-trucks go by, then a few minutes later, there they go again in the other direction. When I get back inside, he has gone into the eye-exam room. They finally called him back there…yay! Wonder how long this waiting part will take?

I’m getting hungry. It is past noon; hope we can go get some lunch when we get done here. Where, I don’t know. Before we came here we’d taken some packages to be mailed at the UPS store, and also had gone by the mechanic’s shop to pick up an invoice for his work place. So, it started out a busy morning, but we are stuck in the waiting zone, for now.

I’m going to try and make up a poem about all this waiting…Hang on a second while I think… Ok…

My Day Out

My Day Out

***

Hey, I’m back from my day out on Friday. We all had a great time…my daughter, my grand-daughter, and I.

Here’s what all we did:

First we tried to find some yard sales. There was only two that sounded half-way good, and we did find them. But, they didn’t have much, even though they advertised as being ‘huge – can’t miss – you will not believe it’ and such as that…they all lie. We looked around while my grand-daughter played with the little kids that lived at the one place. At least she had good fun. I bought a shirt for $2.00…my daughter got nothing, nor did my grand-daughter.

So on to the next one – an estate sale where you go inside. To me everything was too expensive, so didn’t buy anything. They got kids books and a stuffed toy.

We drove around looking for more sales, but couldn’t find any.

In the car, from the very first, we start with the storytelling, jokes, games, and singing. All are orchestrated by my grand-daughter. She’s five years old.

Today she said she’s Princess Leia from Star Wars. She loves all things Star Wars, and began a long story about the cantina, and the characters, etc.

Next up was a singing contest between us three. She gives points for who sings the best, and of course she gets the most points, because ‘we’ don’t sing it smooooth enough.

Then we do some knock knock jokes, and rhyming words, and some I spy with  my little eye games. We do have so much fun!

So, we were ready for lunch at a burger place. Yum!

Then, off to my aunt’s house out in the country (or sort of). She has 5 acres, but housing areas are all surrounding there. It was good to visit for a couple of hours, and my cousin’s son (my first cousin once removed) happened to be there, too. He lives on the property, too. We got to see one of his puppy dogs, named Wittle, but the big dogs were inside the fence, so we didn’t go back there. He plans on getting more chickens, too. We walked all around the house and all, looking at the jackrabbits, and prairie dogs, too. I took some pictures. Later, we looked through a scrapbook of antique or vintage old photos that my aunt had made of the relatives. She also gave me a whole sack of paperback/hardback books she was finished with.

My grand-daughter also gave us a little piano concert, just plinking around on the keys. She loves being the center of attention!

After that, Miss Princess wanted some ice cream, so we went to a place for that, and then it was after 5 p.m. so was time to go home.

The wind was blowing so much, my hair was just twirling around. I checked my phone’s weather thing, and it said it was only 17 mph, but I bet it was more, because it was almost blowing us down!

Anyway, I didn’t get home until around 6 p.m. … fixed us a TV dinner, and watched some TV. Started reading, fell asleep, until the rain beating on the windows woke me up a little later. Finally got back to sleep.

So, that was my day. We’ll probably do it all again next week. 🙂

Here’s some of what I saw…

Red roses & green leaves

Old tractor

Jack rabbit in the distance

Brown & white puppy dog named Wittle

Bleached white cow skulls by a yellow & green wild plant

Prairie Dog … he was yip yip yipping at us

Ghost began to talk, as he shivered. “It’s so cold here, and dark.” His voice sounded like a little boy.

Trevor gasped, “That’s my little brother.”

Ghost spoke again, “Trevor, Trevor…save yourself…go hide.” It was a woman’s voice, this time, very thready and faint.

Trevor started sobbing, “My mother…that’s what she said when she was dying, right over there in the hall.”

Steve wasn’t even paying attention to where the camera was pointing, just pushing the button over and over, click-click-click.

Then Ghost said, in a deep man’s voice, “It’s too fucking hot in here. Might as well be in hell, than try to raise a family in this godforsaken town. Might as well be dead.”

Ghost was pouring sweat, now. He got up from the table, and began acting out what had happened that night of the murder/suicide. He was making chopping motions, as he went from room to room in the house. He was out of the circle of protection. In the bathroom, he acted out poking at the little boy wedged between the toilet and the tub. “I can’t reach you back there, you little bastard,” he yelled. Giving up on trying to kill the boy, he acted out taking his belt, hanging himself on the shower rod.

The guys were staring wide-eyed, as Ghost came back to the table. He got right up in Trevor’s face, and shouted. “I wanted to kill you, too, but you got away. I didn’t want any of you here…this is my house, not yours. I made him do it…the same as they made me do it to my family, over a hundred years ago. I’ve been trapped in this evil so long, I’ve become the evil, and passed it down to everyone that has ever lived on this property. And it will be you next, to carry on the evil, Trevor. This is a warning…get out now, or I will possess you and you will kill everyone you love.”

Ghost’s face was scaring everyone, now. He was snarling the words, gnashing his teeth, and hate was blazing in his eyes. In the back of Kinsey’s mind he remembered, this wasn’t the first murder that had taken place in this house.

Then, Ghost’s voice changed again, to a high-pitched sneer. “You’ll never get rid of me…you’re too scared…little prissy faggot boy…don’t know how to fight. Can’t stand up for himself…hahahah.”

At this, Trevor stood up, knocking his chair over, and shouted back at Ghost. “Shut up, shut up…you think you’re evil? Well, you’re not. You’re dead and you have no control over us…over me. You’ll not possess me or anyone here. Now go away…leave us alone. It ends here.” He grabbed his machete knife and started swinging at Ghost.

Everyone jumped out of their chairs, and out of the way, screaming for Trevor to stop. Ghost was able to move fast, and then he seemed to disappear…at least to everyone there. In their minds was projected a dark, swirling, black mist, where Ghost had been. Ghost was still there in the room, but nobody could see him, now. This stopped Trevor from swinging the knife.

Ghost had ran to Steve, as he came out of his trance. He grabbed Steve’s arm, and as Steve couldn’t see him, he screamed, thinking the demon had grabbed him. Ghost let go of him, and remembered one more thing he was supposed to do.

There was one more little bottle on the table, the one labeled ‘in case of demons’, the Holy Water. Ghost grabbed it, and in his own voice, yelled…”Here, you fucking demon…look me in the eye…you will be gone from here…forever more.” As the mist seemed to turn, Ghost threw the contents of the bottle full on into the swirling, black mass. There was an ear-splitting scream that emanated from the demon, and as it died away, so the mist evaporated.

Ghost stood there shaking, looking at everyone. They all were in shock. Trevor had dropped the machete, and fell to his knees, crying, “It’s over, it’s over.” Zach was crying and hugging Trevor. Terry had backed up clear to the far wall, outside the circle of candles. He looked dazed. Kinsey was actually under the table, staring out from under the cloth, but was still writing, without even looking.

Steve’s vision had come back, as had everyone’s, and he was down on his knees, thanking God that Ghost was back. Ghost felt like he was having a heart attack. He was drained of energy, and breath. He felt lightheaded, and little sparkles of stars came into his vision…then everything went black, and he fell to the floor in a faint.

Steve crawled over to him, begging him to be alive, to wake up…something. “Ghost, wake up, it’s over. You did it…you got rid of the evil spirit.” He held Ghost’s limp body in his arms, and smoothed back his hair. “C’mon Ghost…please wake up.” He looked around the room at the others, “Get me some water, go get me some water.”

Terry stumbled into the kitchen, where he found a bottle of water on the counter. “Here it is, Steve,” he said, giving it to him.

Steve dabbed some onto Ghost’s face and hair. Kinsey came out from under the table, grabbed the bottle from Steve, saying, “Like this,” and he dumped the whole bottle into Ghost’s face. Ghost came up sputtering, wiping water off him. “Ya trying to drown me or something?”

“You’re back, Ghost, you’re back,” Steve hugged him close.

“What happened?” Ghost asked, looking around the room, confused.

“What do ya mean?” Steve asked.

“Did it work? I don’t remember anything,” Ghost said, running his fingers through his wet hair.

“Did it work? Guys, what do y’all think, did it work? I’ll say it did,” Steve laughed. Everyone agreed and high-fived each other, congratulating Ghost.

“That was the awesomest thing I ever seen,” Terry said, “and I wasn’t even trippin'”

Trevor and Zach gave Ghost a big hug, “Thank you…I think the evil is gone…I can’t feel it, anymore,” Trevor said.

Kinsey had gone around blowing out the candles, when he noticed something. It was light outside…the sun had come up…it was dawn. “Guys, look…” he pointed to the bedroom, and to the windows. The vines were going away, curling up and turning brown. The sun was able to shine through, now.

“Wow, I never seen it without the vines,” Zach said.

They all wandered around looking; the whole house had a fresh feeling, already. “Bring me the sage, and a lighter, Steve,” Ghost said. “I still have to cleanse the house, to make sure.” Lighting the bundles, he walked into every room, spreading the sage smoke around until they were burnt out. “Now, it’s over,” he sighed.

“What now,” asked Trevor.

“Go on with your life, Trevor. This chapter is closed. The evil should have no hold on you now, or ever again. It’s up to you what you make of it, from now on,” Ghost said.

Terry was gathering up the chairs and table, while Steve packed up Ghost’s things, and the camera and recorder. “I say we all go to the diner and have a celebration breakfast,” Steve said.

“Pancakes,” Ghost laughed. “I want pancakes,”

“Me too,” Trevor said.

They all agreed, so headed out to their cars. It had been a long, crazy night. As they pulled away from the house, they could see that the vines were dropping leaves, leaving the house in full view.
